capthaltli Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 Got my headset on Friday as backer ~1600. FYI, I fly DCS beta 2.5 (recent update, hot fix this weekend) and have used the Rift since it released, and can get it to work fine with DCS. Regarding my Pimax 5K+, I've got the headset running and connected to the computer, resolution looks great and amazing FOV from what I can see in the steam VR room. I am new to PiTools and SteamVR, but got them both installed and show VR ready and PIMAX detected and setup. When I try to luanch DCS I get a DX11 error see attached pic for details (sorry pic of my monitor). Looking online, it seems this has happened to folks in the past with DCS (nothing to do with PIMAX), so I made sure SSA is turned off and lowered the resolution in DCS to 1920x1080. I’ve done both in the options.lua, but I still get the error and can't get into the game. I don’t think this is a Pimax issue, probably a steam vr issue. I noticed Occulus Home starts up when I try to start DCS with SteamVR and pitools running. Anyone have any suggestions or thoughts? Sad I can't see what DCS looks like in the headset, but I know I must be close. Thanks for the help. [sIGPIC] "GOONIE" [/sIGPIC] "GOONIE" CSG-1 VFA-25
toutenglisse Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 (edited) LOL for the screenshot. I only think of basics : - GPU driver (reinstall with cleanup option - even use DDU in safe mode to uninstall driver prior to fresh install if no luck). - Delete option.lua in your savegame\DCS\config folder. (at least it will allow you to start DCS - maybe even fix the error) - Delete fxo / metashaders also in savegame. - DCS update/cleanup/repair (edit : that is a screenshot :) ) [ATTACH]202833[/ATTACH] Edited January 22, 2019 by toutenglisse
Svsmokey Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 I've seen that "shared memory" thing in another post somewhere on these forums . Seems like a pagefile setting adjustment resolved it . drack Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 Hi capthaltli How are you finding the Pimax? Is it a significant step up from the Rift? Interested to hear! Thanks.

Mule Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 Yep, same here. Please let us know the comparison with the rift. Cheers. Fighter Pilot Podcast.
capthaltli Posted January 28, 2019 Author Posted January 28, 2019 OK, got a little time to test out the 5K+, some good and not so good things to report. First it is definitely a step in the right direction with the FOV and resolution bumbs over my Rift. I used a PD of 1.2, PiTools at 1.25, and SteamVR 100%. I have a decent rig (with "only" a 1080ti and a solid processor) and was pretty impressed with the frame rates I got last night, granted it was only SP and around the boat. The first thing I tested, was to see if the Ball on the stennis was any clearer at 3/4 of a mile, sadly it was about the same in my opinion as the rift. The HUD, cockpit DDIs and switches labels are definitely clearer/shaper (don't need to move my head forward to read) compared to the Rift, but the distance view is about the same for me. My biggest issue so far is that I can't seem to get the headset in the sweet spot in terms of the optics. The way it sits on my head and nose just seem off, and I tried to play with the basics straps they give you, but it never felt right (definitely would not work for an two hour mission). This is compared to the Rift, which the optics and erogonmics just work better for my eyes and head. The IPD settings also seem off as I couldn't find a value that felt right (could be related to the issue I am having with how it sits on my head). I am curious how others experience goes when they get their headset. I think with a better quality headstrap (with headphones and microphone built in, another one of my complaints) it might get better. I also do not have my vive trackers setup for 6 DoF, which impacts my full review. I am working to get this setup and will start using it more for my flying once I have the trackers working. I am using the built in tracking, but it feels strange not having the full range of motion when compared to my rift. Let me know if you have any questions, but thought I would give you my impressions so far. Keep the faith. [sIGPIC] "GOONIE" [/sIGPIC] "GOONIE" CSG-1 VFA-25
EvilBert VR Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 Thanks Toutenglisse! I followed your advice and now my Pimax 5K+ is working with DCS!!! Hi there, does that mean that you start DCS from the Pimax-Tool and not via Steam-VR? Somehow I have only managed to start DCS once with the Pimax5K and I was flashed by the clarity of the image and the immersion! EvilBert VR Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 (edited) I have have Pitool and Steam VR running when I launch DCS, works fine now. I see. So you don't use Steam itself to start DCS. THX for your reply. Btw: What settings are you using? 33-DFTC Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Hello Capthaltli, I just read a message on Pimax's board about the release of their brainwarp technology. Do you think you could test it and give us your impressions a week from now ? At least those of us still waiting for their headset will have a better understanding of what we can expect within DCS when we'll receive our units. Thanks ! All the other sims seems to run great with it while DCS still runs like trash per this guy (and the responses following his). pegon Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 I have the 5k+ and a 1080. From my experience there is a large difference in frame rates between the F18 and f86. The F18 is a slideshow for me, while the F86 is nice and smooth, totally playable. Seems like the added physics of radar and moving map really bogs DCS down in VR. Yeah, this is generally true that VR performance tends to be plane dependent. My list from best to worst. I'm running a rift with a bottom of the barrel GFX/proc... ZnarF Posted June 28, 2019 Posted June 28, 2019 Capthaltli: like you, I just switched from Rift to Pimax 5k+; while this is a nice improvment on the graphic finesse, I feel a bit weird with the head tracking: it works, but not so smooth/authentic than Rift - as if SteamVR makes a sort of auto-smoothing, but...strange!
