Mule Posted March 22, 2019 Posted March 22, 2019 Is anyone else finding the case 1 recovery so much easier with the Hornet after flying the Tomcat? Fighter Pilot Podcast.
Kang Posted March 22, 2019 Posted March 22, 2019 Not having flown the Tomcat I don't know. But I'd imagine it makes sense, because the F-18C is smaller, lighter and quicker to react.

Scofflaw Posted March 22, 2019 Posted March 22, 2019 I find everything in the Hornet feels much easier after flying the Tomcat. The HUD alone makes all the difference. Just my $0.02 - I'm struggling to enjoy the Tomcat. I find the knobs and switches in the cockpit are small, far away, and generally hard to see/operate. I wonder if it's an actual aircraft design difference, or a different approach to cockpit modeling by Heatblur. I'll never complain about the bold-looking DDI fonts when using 4k ever again. run come save me

Eaglewings Posted March 23, 2019 Posted March 23, 2019 I tend to agree. The F-14 is a great aircraft to fly but cannot deny I find the Hornet very appealing in those carrier landing. Also, I think the way the Hornet systems were introduced by Wags in those academic videos helped a lot. The analog HUD, weathering effect on instruments labels and having to zoom in to get data from the flight instruments panels all kind get me to struggle at this early stage. I am hoping as I learn more of the systems, I find it more fun to fly. Just edit "MDG_strokesDefs.lua" file and reduce the values in the first two lines: C:\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\Mods\aircraft\FA-18C\Cockpit\Scripts\Multipurpose_Display_Group\Common\indicator\MDG_strokesDefs.lua Before: stroke_thickness = 0.8 stroke_fuzziness = 0.5 After: stroke_thickness = 0.4 stroke_fuzziness = 0.2

jcbak Posted March 23, 2019 Posted March 23, 2019 The F14 has pointed out how lazy I've gotten with flight discipline. I also fly XPlane and rely too much on autopilot. The Tomcat will make me better. I can see where the warbird guys have an advantage when learning to control this beautiful bird. Ahmed Posted March 23, 2019 Posted March 23, 2019 Most of that added difficulty can be blamed on the lack of seat-of-the-pants feeling. The same way that it is quite difficult to hold a level altitude (trivial most likely in real life) in the F-14 without constantly actively monitoring the instruments, it also requires a more exhaustive scan when flying it around the case I pattern. Also I realized that you need a good stick with good calibration in order to AAR with the Tomcat without sweating due to constant spikes.
