Regarding inlet ice / heating, when is the 'correct' time to turn it on?

I feel like turning it on after the master caution alerts me is waiting too long,so figured I'd ask.

The anti-ice warning is bugged right now IIRC. Technically, you should turn the pitot heat on before takeoff reguardless and my guess is that the engine anti-ice is turned on when encountering visible moisture with temperatures are 7 degrees Celsius.

If I recall correctly, the procedure is that you turn on the Engine Anti-ice switch when you receive the INLET ICE warning, lower altitude and reduce engine RPM. I don't remember the numbers, it's been a while. Check the public release of the NATOPS manual.

AFAIK the INLET ICE warning does not tell that icing is occuring, but that it might occur if you don't do something against it. Therefor I just flick engine anti ice on when the message pops up and switch it off when it disappears. It comes up at higher altitudes if you're not going fast enough dealwithit.png

Pitot heat is usually set to auto, so no need to do anything here. Technically it's kept off on the ground that way and switched on as you're picking up speed AFAIK. Could also be related to weight on wheels.

The pitot heat will turn on with weight off wheels automatically with the switch in AUtO. No reason to move the switch. For engine anti-ice you’d put that on any time flying in visible moisture with the inlet temps on the engine page between -10 and 10.

The real life consequences of inlet ice are potential FOD damage to the motors as that I’ve is shed from the intakes and goes down the motor.
