Pride37 Posted June 14, 2019 Posted June 14, 2019 (edited) Aaah, great, Paris Air Show I guess... I'll be there next Thursday. Thanks for the pics, that's a real scoop !! Looks like they finally opted for very angled stabilizers (not really a surprise...) QuiGon Posted June 17, 2019 Posted June 17, 2019 Uhm, what is this model? AFAIK the FCAS project has not even reached the design phase yet. I guess this is just a symbolic model which has no resemblance to the final product? QuiGon Posted June 17, 2019 Posted June 17, 2019 (edited) A general overview for those who wonder what FCAS actually is: FCAS (Future Air Combat System) is a project between France and Germany and also Spain which entered the project just today. It is important to understand, that FCAS is not an aircraft! Instead FCAS is a system of systems that is supposed to replace the Eurofighter (Germany, Spain) and the Rafale (France) as a 6th gen air combat system. FCAS consists of three main systems, which are: - Next Generation Weapon System (NGWS): This is the actual fighter aircraft that will either be manned or unmanned or both (not yet decided). - Remote Carrier (RC): This is an autonomous drone that will accompany the fighter aircraft (probably as a swarm) to support the jet on its mission (e.g. carry additional weapons). - Air Combat Cloud (ACC): This will be the network link to manage the interaction between the fighter jets and the drones. FCAS will be developed by a joint venture of Dassault Aviation and Airbus Defence and Space and is currently planned to be introduced into service in 2040. The defense ministers of Germany, France and Spain are signing the Framework Arrangement for the development of FCAS at the Paris Air Show in Le Bourget. Svend_Dellepude Posted June 17, 2019 Posted June 17, 2019 Once there was a prototype called YF-23. The design doesn't look that much different IMO. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Win10 64, Asus Maximus VIII Formula, i5 6600K, Geforce 980 GTX Ti, 32 GB Ram, Samsung EVO SSD.
Emu Posted June 17, 2019 Posted June 17, 2019 Once there was a prototype called YF-23. The design doesn't look that much different IMO. F-35 intakes and more slant towards horizontal in the tail. That's about it.
aaron886 Posted June 17, 2019 Posted June 17, 2019 Once there was a prototype called YF-23. The design doesn't look that much different IMO. Form follows function, min ven. These mock-ups always look the same because at this stage everything is about basic physics. I think the most interesting changes happen as aerodynamics are adjusted and compromises are made. There's something very characteristic of the difference between a mock-up and the final design. YF-17 and F/A-18, YF-22 and F-22, X-35 and F-35, all great examples of that fascinating transformation.

QuiGon Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 Yikes, hope they change that wing layout. That's Fugly. Those are just mock-up models which will probably have no resemblance to the final jet at all.
