Just a curiosity here, is it standard for the F-16 (and all NATO aircraft) to take a pair of AMRAAMs or more in COIN missions?

Not all aircraft types do so, but most types carry a couple of AAMs of some sort out in the sandy places. More to do with the nearby countries than the mission the aircraft is directly involved with.

Great pictures, msvegas!

Loved the second one specially (although that Viper needs some repaint :D)

It does not need a paint job. Block 50 paint ( at least from the US that I have seen) is porous, rough and hard to clean, so it look like that even when new, just depends on the viewing angle.

That F-16 is on alert status, that is why it's was carrying live A2A missiles. I have never heard the term "COIN mission" so I have no idea what do you mean with that question, sorry.

By "COIN", do you mean "counterinsurgency missions"?

I do not think if the F-16 has a specific load for any task. I think is dependent on what the pilot decide is the best weapons for what ever target or mission they must do. Also depends what weapons are available to them. Just because F-16 (which ever block) may be certify to carry a weapons, does not mean that unit/squadron has those weapons available. I tend to over explain stuff and end up confusing people, if I did that, sorry.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

CAMPIA-TURZII, Romania -- An 81st Fighter Ssquadron pilot prepares to shoot the A-10

Thunderbolt II's 30 mm seven-barrel Gatling gun during training at a range here Oct. 22.

Precise weapons delivery is one of the 81st FS’ priorities while training here, as pilots are able

to utilize many of the A-10s capabilities. “This deployment offers tremendous training

opportunities for an A-10 squadron,” said Lt. Col. Ronald Stuewe, 81st FS commander. “We

plan on maximizing the events that are difficult to obtain from home station – low altitude,

chaff and flare employment, and basic weapons delivery. The potential ability to utilize our

Data-Link (a computer network for communication between aircraft) will be critical in the

European Command Area of Responsibility and will truly allow the squadron to train like we

fight.” (U.S. Air Force photo/2nd Lt. Kathleen Polesnak)

Thanks for the explanation, Eddie and mvsgas (I always mispell the nickname as msvegas, for some reason).

Mvsgas, don't worry, got what you mean.

Well, considering the 'noisy' neighours Afghanistan and Iraq have, it really makes sense to be prepared, just in case. Just a last question, was there any incident involving NATO aircraft and other aircraft from nearby countries since the start of the operations on that theater?

I haven't heard of NATO and aircraft from neighbouring countries directly interacting with each other in either Afghan or Iraq. I have heard mentions of Iranian air traffic control threatening NATO fighters with interception due to them being 'inside Iranian airspace' but I've not seen and written evidence of any such threats or the outcome.

But based on Iranian naval activities in the Gulf it wouldn't surprise me to hear such an event did occur.

Indeed, that's my point, the Eagle being beaten by a new aircraft doesn't suddenly mean the Eagle is a bad aircraft. But for some reason some people feel to need to jump to the Eagle's (or whatever aircraft it may be) defence by questioning the fact that is was beaten or trying to put down the aircraft that beat it.

It just seems odd to me. Things become obsolete all the time, it's life. Instead of fighting against the new, embrace and marvel at it.

I think it has more to do with an individuals admiration for the aircraft ; I mean some people still believe that the F-14 is superior to the F/A-18E-F.

I do not know, never heard of any incidents. Then again, I'm just a little mechanic, not privily to any info like that.

Clustermunitions is just another way of saying that you don't like someone.

I used to like people, then people ruined that for me.

?

It might not be common for the Spanish, but it's a very regular occurrence for us and the Germans.

Why is it so hard for people to accept that Typhoon can and does easily beat DACT opponents. The only thing I can think of to explain it is utter ignorance of the aircraft and it's capabilities.

Didnt say the aircraft was bad, just that the article might be saying lies.

The strange thing would be if the 493rd SQN. from LN, with 8x F-15 against 2x Thypoon from Spain, with the same missiles I guess the AIM-120's (simulated), are not able too shoot down a single Typhoon!? What I know the LN F-15's are up to date Eagles with the latest software and radars (not 60`s style), if it is true then the Typhoon is a blast. But remember it is like selling Cars, on the Fighter market.

The areal shot, the way you would see it beign launched at your buddy, is the more interesting part for me anyway ;)

Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
