Griffin Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 V-22 May Need New Engine "The compressor blades were being damaged, and it was impacting the engine performance. At the time we were experimenting with filters - including panty hose." LOL
AlphaOneSix Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 I recently spoke with a Chinook pilot from the 160th SOAR*, and he said basically the same thing, that the Osprey engines were wearing out and needing replacement at a very low interval, much lower than would normally be expected. *What does a Chinook pilot in the 160th have to do with Ospreys? Nothing, but they were parked next to each other on the ramp where I was located and the 160th guys and the Osprey guys (USAF) mingled fairly frequently.

AlphaOneSix Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 Lottery for the manufacturer. Depends on the contract. In most cases, parts are covered under warranty just like most consumer products. More than likely, Rolls-Royce will take the hit and pay for the fixes under warranty, otherwise risk a sizable PR pain. It will cost them a lot less now to fix the issues than it will when they lose their next possible contract due to bad PR.
mikoyan Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 (edited) Check this out apparently this guys are selling a mig-23; mig-25; k-36 ejection seats; wwII instruments; a su-25 front fuselage; an apu and the su-25 hud!!!! mikoyan Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 What I read is that the osprey; not being a helicopter; can't autorotate on the event of engine failure; also the dusty environments where it has to operate reduce power creating operational limitations; some people speculate that the last accident was caused by the lack off power and the high altitude the osprey was operating plus heavy load. hovering performance is also limited and the airplane can't land at certain altitudes. It seems to me that the osprey is a very complex machine that doesn't have the flexibility projected while it was on the development stages. The complexity and limitations exceeds its benefits.
aaron886 Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 ...A question I frequently ask myself. :(
mvsgas Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 The sad part for me, If I was rich, I wouldn't even fly them for fear of crashing them. I would just take them all apart and put them together, run the engine from time to time. Would be like my relaxation spot. Wife starts nagging, I will be in the garage taking the landing gear off. Laurius Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Is it me or does this look odd? Look at the planes, they look...different? You are may be talking about the nose gear trapdoor ? hitman Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 They arent different. Pilotasso Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 I see this differently. I work with several rolls royce engines, among them is the AE2100 which is similar to the one on V22. We see a difference between desert users and temperate region users. Planes that fly over deserts suffers from higher erosion and sulfidation than temperate contries. They also dump higher concentrations of refineries byproduts, that usually lie in areas near where there are aircraft taking off and landing routinely. So by saying the V22's have been suffereing higher rates of erosion and inspection/repair does not surprise at all. All this is obvious to experienced guys and sounds like PR stunts to me in order to negotiate better contract terms. .

Well, I'm no fan of the Osprey, but most of these assumptions are incorrect.

While the engine wear isn’t related to Iraq’s harsh environment, according to the Marine Corps, the news takes the winds out of much hoped for good PR. Also note that the article was written prior to any deployments by the Osprey to Afghanistan.
Laurius Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Is it me or does this look odd? Look at the planes, they look...different? Since I do think they look the same either, could you please tell us what made you think they could look different ? I thought about the nose gear trapdoors but since F-35 has 2 of them, I really wonder ... (at the begining, I thought one was enough but I was wrong) Cheers Asus P8Z68 Deluxe, Intel Core i7-2600K (3.4 GHz), Corsair Vengeance 2x4096 Mo DDR3 1866 MHz, SSD 120 Go Vertex 2, EVGA GeForce GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0 4Go (04G-P4-2978-KR), TM HOTAS Warthog #03797 (MB replaced), Saitek Combat Pro Rudder, TrackIR 5, TM Cougar MFDs with Lilliput 8" UM 80
aaron886 Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Those are Alphas... Air Force variant. Shorter wingspan than the Navy version, and obviously without the VTOL "tumors" of the Marine Corps variant. We've been seeing more pics of the C model lately with the Navy starting testing at NAS Pax (including that first cat shot.) Maybe your eyes are spotting that difference. They look "normal" to me, so I couldn't tell ya.
mvsgas Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Guys, I just thought the aircraft look superimpose ( that is a big word for me, I think I hurt a finger typing it) I was not talking about any specifics nor about how they look different from each other. They look different from every other aircraft, they look like added to the picture. LOL I need to get and and English writing class.
