marcos Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 (edited) He's got something like the TOW in mind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUMxZ34Ptco EDIT: Can't embed /fail What warhead was in that? Because 5kg HE shouldn't be enough to defeat MBT armour without a direct hit and on some modern MBTs even with a direct hit it probably still won't work. Is it some kind of top down penetrator? Aha yep, nice: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BGM-71_TOW BGM-71F BGM-71D variant; TOW-2B top-down attack variant using explosively formed penetrators Edited May 18, 2013 by marcos
Fjordmonkey Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 What warhead was in that? Because 5kg HE shouldn't be enough to defeat MBT armour without a direct hit and on some modern MBTs even with a direct hit it probably still won't work. Remember, this is a Top-down attack missile, most likely the TOW 2B. So it hits the tank at it's most vulnerable spot, which is the top of the turret. So most likely, even if it hadn't touched off the ammo inside of the tank (that's what caused the gigantic explosion), it would penetrate the top of the turret and filled it with both flames and molten metal. So the crew would have been just as dead as when the ammo went. Most of todays western guided AT-missiles have a top-down attack-mode, which gives them added lethality even against tanks that have added bolt-on armor. It's hard to see from the angle in the vid, but the missile sends a shaped-charge jet of molten metal down into the top of the turret, and that will cut through most if not all armortypes used on the top of modern MBT's. Doh. Didn't see you edited your post :) Regards Fjordmonkey Clustermunitions is just another way of saying that you don't like someone. I used to like people, then people ruined that for me.

This downward penetrator effect is a new one on me in terms of ATGMs although CBU-97/105s have used a similar effect for a long time.
Nealius Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 Those are really interesting videos from Syria. I just wish I didn't have to mute them over the annoying "allahu akbar" chants... 1

Lucas_From_Hell Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Aircraft ZZ664 is seen here outside the hangar at L-3's facilities in Greenville, Texas following its roll-out in April. Aviation Week showed the first image of the RC-135, which will be named Airseeker in RAF service, on Christmas Eve as the aircraft was being worked on in the hangars at Greenville. The RAF has three RC-135s on order, making the U.K. the first export customer for the RC-135V/W Sigint jets. The aircraft are being converted from a trio of 1964-vintage Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers. According to officials from RAF Waddington, the future home of the aircraft in the U.K., the first Airseeker will enter service with 51 Squadron by the end of 2013. Personnel from the squadron are undertaking Conversion Training at Offutt Air Force Base Nebraska. Qualified UK personnel already fly alongside their US counterparts on Rivet Joint operational missions.
Lucas_From_Hell Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 RAF Leuchars, 1963. Such a shame it's closing down... Beautiful location it was. Sea Harriers over the Falklands:

IIa (thanks to IvanK), "according to the code "RN" it was allocated to No. 72 Sqn. According to the Spitfire production list I read it went to 9 MU on 2-2-41, on 20-4-41 to 65 Sqn and at the same time to 72 Sqn (?). On 9-7-41 it went to 74 Sqqn and after that on 19-2-42 to 57 OTU. It eventually crashed in 1945 and was SOC" - source Edited May 21, 2013 by Lucas_From_Hell Fixed & added info on the Spitfire
Pilotasso Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 The missile was fired... what? 2-3 miles max head on, high speed approach after that authorization finally came through? .
joey45 Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 So we're replacing the Nimrod with a much older aircraft...... Way to go UK Gov't... The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.
