In the future an unnamed “national aerobatic team” (provisional designation “9 May”) will fly the nine Yak-130 training aircraft.
Yak-130 is a new generation aircraft. Maybe, Russia is trying to promote it.

I understand that. But, also, one should live within its own means. If there is no money for aerobatic team, then aerobatic team should not exist. There is no shame in being discipline and respect your own financial situation. Aerobatic team is not a necessity and when and if there is better times, Flankers and Fulcrums might fly aerobatics again.

Well, aerobatics teams generally speaking aren't about being financially viable. They're about attracting recruits to the service. (From my own experience at least.) Flying what the public might perceive as "lesser" aircraft might remove the point of their existance to a large extent.

Doing one low pass above a city can also do that :)

(also from own experience ;))

Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.

In the future aerobatic teams will be drones. Can you imagine an airshow demo with Predators buzzing around? The Red Bees (like they are called in A'stan).

Disbanding of those units is a biggest mistake Russians can make. Those dozen aircraft and their pilots are Thee only "thru the year" airworthy and most valuable part of Russian VVS and PVO!

Strizhi and Knight were established by pilots in order to keep flying and to maintain at least dozen airworthy fighter aircraft at Kubinka.None of these aircraft were customized for aerobatics, they retained their fight capatibilities.

I though that redbull was an sponsor of the russian knights... drones who want to see computer controlled airshows there is no human skill there

that's a good point - keep predators and such at R/C gatherings :)

You guys take my joke too seriously ... but indeed VFAT shows that it doesn't have to be remote possibility: I actually enjoyed watching VFAT events a lot!

Also they are about getting people support and showing what the military has. Airshows bring a lot of money to the base they are at and attract thousands.

Classic from when the Draken was new: "hey, let's show the plane to the people". "Ooops, I accidently broke the sound barrier over a major city and now we have thousands of people asking us to replace their windows." :D

True though. I often see them practicing tac turns and such overhead and it always gives me a buzz. Not quite as big as back in the Viggen era when they'd often do the low-flying training over me, but still. :)

There's other ways as well. I am acquainted with a 39 pilot (wouldn't say friends since we don't communicate regularly, more friend of a friend with similar interests) and when he came over to us to do a talk on various topics you could see the enthusiasm for the fighter force grow palpably. A simple Q&A session for 30 minutes with a pilot can do wonders for shoring up support.

Yes it can. When I was in Alaska I had an F-16 and A-10 pilot friend. We talked a lot since we went to the same church and the F-16 pilot even flew lock on 1.02. I always had fun talking to them, was deployed in Guam with the F-16 guy and almost had a flight over there.
