testudine2002 Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 I watched Grim Reapers videos on both of the two HARM modes (SP vs TOO). They seem the same to me. Lock on, fire, and forget. What's the difference between these two modes? When would one mode be better than the other? Ty.
Hardcard Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 SP is supposed to guide the HARM towards the highest threat. TOO allows you to choose between different radar sources. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
AstonMartinDBS Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 (edited) SP is supposed to guide the HARM towards the highest threat. TOO allows you to choose between different radar sources. You can choose between sources in SP as well as in TOO mode. The main difference is AFAIK, that TOO mode uses the seeker from the HARM (viewing ahead/clearly arranged), and the SP mode the RWR (with it's 360° coverage) from the Hornet as source. I don't know, if there is any difference in accuracy between SP and TOO modes. Kang Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 At the end of the day, if your HARM is on the way towards the right target, it doesn't make much of a difference anymore. It's mostly the different displays. SP is self protect. You can select targets, but you have no distance information at all. A bit like a quick shot, when a pesky SAM just pops up while you are busy with your actual mission. TOO is target of opportunity. It's more like actively looking for emitters. The view 'from the seeker head' on the display lets you judge the position of the SAM (or whatever) a little better, get a guess at the range and evaluate the threats a bit further. Also much easier to distinguish between several radars that are at similar bearing.
isotaan Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 For a target ahead of you, the flight profile of SP mode and TOO mode are identical- the missile will fly up until halfway to the target and then tip down and coast directly towards it. TOO mode has the advantage of putting the target location on your HUD, and the Harm's display on the DDI can let you pick a specific radar out spatially. One major difference is that the HARM is capable of over-the-shoulder shooting under certain flight conditions. You need to be in SP mode and the target needs to be somewhere behind you. Lock the appropriate radar and shoot and watch the missile (sometimes) turn around and hit your target.
testudine2002 Posted May 23, 2020 Author Posted May 23, 2020 Thanks for the replies. The two modes are so close, I think I'll just stick with SP when hitting the occasional SAM unexepectedly,, and I'll use TOO when I'm actually hunting SAMs.
Sandman1330 Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 Is SP mode supposed to automatically select the highest threat? Right now it doesn’t. I have found myself many times locked and fired upon unexpectedly and having to spam the seq/raid/fov to try and quickly box the threat radar system in order to engage. And then I usually end up overshooting it and having to cycle all the way back around again, ha. One would think it should automatically switch in SP mode? SP mode will make more sense when PULLBACK mode gets implemented. Pullback will recognise when the RWR detects a high threat emitter and automatically override your currently selected mode and weapon and select HARM in SP. Ready for quick defensive shot. Right now TOO mode is superior in every sense.

Here’s hoping they fix the long standing issue of getting RWR Launch and track indications from other flights far away from ownship, otherwise pullback will be constantly overriding our currently selected mode, even if the threat is far away and isn’t directed at you... Kang Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 Considering how long that has been an issue, I'd say you best stop carrying HARMs around too much.

Luckily you can override the Pullback function with a simple selection.
Diesel_Thunder Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 I typically use TOO mode as well. I am looking forward to when the new damage model is rolled out, as we should be able to take out the emitters with the HARM, instead of just inflicting overall damage as we have now.
