With the release of the Syria map, it would be nice having a Jordanian AF c-101 counter insurgency campaign.

Comments, ideas anyone?

About a year ago, I was reading about the 70s Dhofar insurgency in Oman. I'm sure there are others that have an interest in small bush wars and lesser known histories. I immediately thought of the C-101 as a stand-in for the SOAF Strikemasters.

But within DCS, I never did anything more than ponder the possibilities. Unfortunately, Dhofar and the vast majority of Oman are well south of the PG map. I envisioned an alternate history where the late 80s / early 90s Sultanate of Musandam and Gamrun (one spelling of a former name Bandar Abbas) straddled the Straits of Hormuz and experienced an insurgency on the north side.

Honestly, in the campaign, I wanted to fly out of Khasab and past those fjords each sortie. Musandam is just too small to be the entire state, so I effectively annexed the modern day Iranian province of Hormozgan. (There's actually some precedence for this during the 1600s thru 1800s.) It would also have kept me flying north and well away from those ultra modern glass towers in the UAE. At the time, the alternate Sultanate still made fair use of contract officers and I envisioned the same Jordanian C-101s might have been leased or donated to the cause. Material support to the insurgents came from the Soviets in Afghanistan or the Chinese via Pakistan. The Iranians (minus Hormozgan) were otherwise busy with Iraq, which would undoubtedly explain the porous borders.

In the Syria map, you could easily go with the present day and save yourself all the historical gymnastics to engineer a viable conflict. And according to Wikipedia, Jordan has retired the C-101. They might have been donated to a proxy group inside Syria or perhaps purchased by PMC contracting in the region. You'd need to stay in the more permissive air environments.... hope our intel is solid. Some of your missions might include:

1) performing patrols to work up in the area and and eventually interdict supply lines,

2) re-imagining a Battle of Mirbat or perhaps Battle of Kamdesh (The Outpost) type scenario where either your CAS or perhaps FAC services stave off certain defeat of embattled ground forces, or

3) catching some elusive Katyusha's firing on allied camps at sunset.

For inspiration of the last, here's an excerpt from Ch 7 of "In the Service of the Sultan: A First Hand Account of the Dhofar Insurgency" by Ian Gardiner.

"Because of their range, usually the only counter to the Katyusha was an air strike. However it took time to rustle up an air strike and, in the time it took for a Strikemaster to appear, there was every chance that the adoo would have finished firing and moved the firing point. Moreover, the adoo would wait until evening before they fired their Katyushas. Since they were firing from the west eastwards on to our positions, this meant that the sun was in our eyes, and the horizon would be hazy and indistinct, making it almost impossible for us to identify the firing point. Although the Katyushas were essentially line of sight weapons they could be fired from a reverse slope which we could not see. Unlike a mortar, there was no warning 'pop'. However, if one was extremely lucky, one might be able to spot an initial trail of smoke. So we took to arranging for aircraft to be in the air just before sunset, out of sight and sound but close enough to be called in at a moment's notice. This Katyusha trap worked on at least one occasion."

funny, i had considered cutting my teeth on "how to build a campaign" on a hypothetical situation of an iranian-supported insurgency led by former leaders from the Dhofar rebellion rising up following the (IRL) death of sultan Qaboos. This campaign would feature joint ops with the Emiratis across the border, and also missions to counter training camps, staging areas, and water-borne supply lines

Unfortunately, the Omani area on the PG map is very small and flying from one airfield to the other, staying within omani airspace, is a very short flight. this was to be done with the f-16, or with the c-101 acting as a stand-in for a hawk or other airframe the Omanis really did use

I bring up jordan because they did fly the c-101, and still train iraqi pilots with them

The scenario I may get to at some point for another mini-campaign, is to deploy Jordanian C-101s during the Tanker Wars in the 80s before Earnest Will begins.

The missions could be some mix of sea reconnaissance, search and rescue, and possibly retaliatory strikes on Iran.

That sounds great, but in my original post, I mentioned Syria map tho. No need to deploy outside of Jordan. It would be nice to use them on their own home turf. Having been in both Israel and jordan, it would be nice to fly there even tho I don't know how many airfields are modelled there

The RJAF has also been active in Syria, albeit with f-16s, it's not all that contrived to find a use for the c-101 there

According to the FAQ, king Hussein air college, the air base in Al-Mafraq is included which is 45miles southeast of the southern point of the sea of Galilee and 12 miles south of the Jaber border crossing into syria

An air college seems a likely place to see an aircraft like a c-101!

Additionally, Jordan was active in Syria in 2014-15 and while it was likely primarily f-16s involved, we could notionally do coin missions with the c101., Especially in support of the Southern Front, &later the Revolutionary Commando Army

Jordan maintains good relations with both Lebanon and Israel, so conceivably we could see joint operations missions, or perhaps have airfields in either country be used as an emergency divert if the aircraft can't make it back to Mafraq

Jordan isn't a major player in the Syria map, but of the four real life operators (Chile,Honduras,Jordan, and Spain) this is our chance to fly the c-101 with the least number of "make-believe conditions"

@ngreenaway, not that you needed proof, but this article puts C101s in 11 squadron at Mafraq / King Hussein Air College in 2015. Nice photos too.

You could plausibly build missions in 2014 or again starting in February 2015 (straddling the capture of Flt Lt al-Kasasbeh). Perhaps the RJAF sending F-16s to participate alongside the KSA, UAE and other Gulf AF's in Yemen during late 2015 might be another hook for employing the C101 instead of a F-16.

While looking for information on the Jordanian C-101CC I have found some interesting pictures. (Attached at the bottom of the post)

The first one shows two C-101 coming out of the hardened shelters at King Hussein Air Base. I have tried to spawn a C-101 in there in DCS but the mission editor won’t let me. Oddly enough the F-5, F-16 and F-18 can spawn inside the shelters, it looks like it’s bugged for the C-101.

The second one shows an armed Jordanian C-101CC carrying the dual .50 cal gun pod and four rockets pods, which look like the rocket pods (7 rockets) that we have in DCS but with disposable aerodynamic fairings. It’s worthy of note that there are rocket pods mounted on the external pylons, in DCS we are only allowed to mount air to air missiles on those pylons.

The third one shows that the Jordanian C-101CC, like the EB, have also been fitted with a smoke system.

The fourth one shows Jordanian C-101, Mirage F1 and F-16 flying in formation.

And the last one is a Jordanian C-101 pilot patch.

Nice! I've got a bit much on my plate at the moment to build a campaign. It's something Id like to do,or at least certainly would like to work with someone else on one

Wish we had the f-4, and a lot more of Jordan so we could recreate this shot:
