So I've noticed the past couple of days a strange situation where the ocean goes missing and I see the ocean floor instead. Seeing this both from the cockpit and from F2 view...graphics settings all high including water. Very odd to see the screws on the Roosevelt spinning in mid air :smilewink:...anyone else seeing this?

Thanks, I'm currently running the F18Smokewinder, F18MFDColourMod, FLOLS Overlay Disable and Caucasus and NTTR ICLS mods through JSGME so will disable them, run a cleanup & repair and give it a try. I'll report back if the problem occurs with my DCS log - though it is kinda cool to see the model of the ocean floor :smilewink:

Wanted to follow up as I'm still having this issue off and on even after a cleanup/repair and removal of all mods.  A very strange thing just occurred...I was flying a Case III Hornet landing on the Roosevelt and a couple minutes into the mission the ocean texture disappeared just as I originally reported.  I finished the landing then went into replay mode.  I didn't change any views so it replayed the exact same views I saw in my original mission and I expected the ocean texture to disappear at the same point in the mission, but in the track replay the ocean texture never disappeared and everything displayed perfectly 🙃

Here's my log file from the session...I should note that in this case I'd reinstalled my mods and there are some ERROR lines in the log but nothing that I can properly evaluate related to textures.  I''d definitely appreciate any help and if anything odd is appearing in my log.dcs.log

I should also add if it helps that this only occurs with the ocean textures.  Rivers, bays, inlets and other water  features render properly and I've never had an issue with them.

Thanks!

Hi. I don't see any message related to the disappearance of the sea.

However, your game was not completely repaired:

Remove the "\DCS World\CoreMods\aircraft\FA-18C\FA-18C.lua" file, run a cleanup and repair, then check if the issue persists. If so, please attach a fresh dcs.log file.

OK, that didn't take long!  I removed all mods, removed the "\DCS World\CoreMods\aircraft\FA-18C\FA-18C.lua" file and ran the cleanup & repair.  Restarted DCS completely clean with no mods.  Ran the same Case III practice mission I was running yesterday and the 2nd time through lost the ocean textures (see some screenshots below).  Once again, I made a track recording of the mission and it played back with absolutely no ocean texture problems!!!  I can only guess that means the disappearing ocean textures are random and not repeatable based on my control or view inputs?  I've attached the DCS.log as well as the "ocean texture prob.trk" in case it would be helpful - not taking complete responsibility for the poor landing attempt...hey, the ocean disappeared...how was I supposed to keep my cool and catch a perfect 3 wire? 🙃

The original ERROR's you mentioned relating to the fa-18c.lua are now gone.  I had a look at the DCS.log and here are the errors that seem to be related to textures, not sure if they're relevant to my problem, and there are other ERROR lines as well, but here they are:

2021-01-12 21:15:26.424 ERROR   EDCORE: Can't open file 'bazar/shaders/posteffects/slot.fx.' from fs

On one hand, it's good to know the issue isn't because of any mod I was running...on the other it's a frustrating problem since 90% of the missions I create and fly are centered around SuperCarrier!

Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks all!

Here's some screenshots I took during the mission in case they would be helpful.  Note the 2nd & 3rd which were both taken while the mission was paused with the ocean texture flickering on and off!  The last pic is pretty cool being able to see the Roosevelt's screws while landing, but I'd prefer the expected backwash!

I've replayed your track (sea shows up, of course) and the only error message I get among those you've shown is this one: 2021-01-12 21:15:26.424 ERROR   EDCORE: Can't open file 'bazar/shaders/posteffects/slot.fx.' from fs

However, I've been looking at lots and lots of log files in the last months, and I see your other errors very often in other users logs. I don't know where they come from, but I'm pretty sure they are not related to the disappearance of the sea.

To solve this, we need to know why and when it's happening. Here are the questions you must answer:

  • Which maps? Only Caucasus?
  • What time of day? Try the same thing at noon. Does the ocean disappear?
  • What if you remove the Super Carrier and fly over the sea?

Please try this if you haven't already: rename your "Saved Games\DCS" folder (don't delete it!) and start DCS. You will have default settings and controls. Fly the exact same mission and see if the issue is gone.

Thanks for having a look Flappie.  I'll give these suggestions a try and report back.  As far as the current scenarios with the error:

1) I've only seen it on the Caucasus map as I rarely fly any other

2) Drop outs occur at both mid-day and evening

First off, I'll try to recreate after moving Saved Games\DCS to a safe place.  If it recurs, I'll try removing SuperCarrier from the mission.  If it still remains, I'll try to recreate this over the Persian Gulf and hopefully can narrow down exactly what is going on!

Update:  so I copied Saved Games/DCS to a safe place and restarted.  Got a popup screen asking if I wanted to update to the current version so I said yes.  I'm apparently going to be going through a long update process of 56GB!  Not sure why moving Saved Games/DCS triggered this but it's been a couple months since I updated and I've been flying offline mode so maybe this update will solve my issue...we'll see!

Have you been launching using DCS.exe instead of DCS_Updater.exe?

No, my desktop shortcut points to:  "C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\bin\DCS_updater.exe"

Very odd!  Anyway, the update is done so I'm going in to do some testing and see if I can recreate the error 😉

Well, I've been testing for a few days now and am at a complete loss to explain what I've seen.  As I mentioned earlier, I removed my Saved Games/DCS and restarted.  This lead to a massive update download...that's ok, I've been playing offline mode for a couple months so perhaps I needed to catch up.  After that completed, I started the game and only changed the options to full screen, 2560x1440, and the other "High" presets.  Used the same Case III landing mission as a test since that one displayed the vanishing ocean texture so consistently.  Ran the mission twice with zero texture problems.

Moved my usual Saved Games/DCS directory back in place, restarted and reran the same Case III mission 3 times.  The 3rd time I experienced the missing ocean texture problem.

Moved my usual Saved Games/DCS dir out of the way and went back to the vanilla version.  Restarted and reran the Case III mission 7 times with no ocean texture issue.  A-ha, it seems the problem is in my Saved Games/DCS dir somewhere!

Moved my usual Saved Games/DCS directory back in place, restarted and reran the same Case III mission at least 3 times with no ocean texture issue.

Used JSGME to put my mods back so everything is as it was when I began this thread, restarted and reran the same Case III mission at least 5 times with no ocean texture issue.

So when I want it to fail to prove I've located the problem it works perfectly and I can't get it to fail!  Isn't that the way things always work?  Anyway, it sure appears to me this is a random occurrence of some kind with no repeatable cause.  At this point, I'm back to flying for fun and if the problem reappears my next move is to see if I can get it to happen on the Persian Gulf map and I'll report back.  The only weird thing I was seeing when the ocean texture was disappearing that I don't see anymore is on the load of the Caucasus map into the mission editor.  It would seem to get stuck on the final texture load named, "Terrain Graphics Init: 97 Caucasus ng5" and sit there for 15+ seconds.  Now it blows right through it and loads without delay...don't know if it's at all related to my ocean texture issue but it's about the only clue I can find 🙃

Resurrecting this thread as unfortunately the problem has returned.  I've been flying the Marianas map hoping to not see the problem where originally the issue occurred on the Caucasus map but no joy.  No mods loaded, very simple mission...just me and a Supercarrier with a few static planes parked on the deck.  Here's a couple shots at what I'm seeing...same as before, the ocean textures go missing in the middle of the mission.  Doesn't repeat the issue on replay.  Log attached.

Flying newest stable: DCS/2.7.5.10869

Don't know if it's relevant but I seem to have quite a few ERROR_ONCE DX11BACKEND: texture not found errors in the log.

Considering all I fly are Carrier related missions, a missing ocean texture issue really hurts...any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi! I see you have two mods installed. Please try disabling them in the module manager:

2021-09-04 23:59:20.345 INFO SOUND: Added sound path: C:\Users\denni\Saved Games\DCS\Mods/aircraft/Tic-Tac UFO/Sounds
2021-09-04 23:59:20.350 INFO SOUND: Added sound path: C:\Users\denni\Saved Games\DCS\Mods/aircraft/VSN_UFO/Sounds

The other errors in your log are "standard": everyone has them.

Let's try something we haven't tried yet. Empty these cache folders:

  • C:\Users\Your_Name\AppData\Local\Temp\DCS
  • C:\ProgramData\NVIDIA Corporation\NV_Cache (Windows will warn some files cannot be deleted, jut click "Ignore")

Forgot about my UFO mods as they're not managed by JSGME.  I'll pull those and make the other cache clears you recommend and report back if the problem returns.  I also read in a similar thread people had success clearing the .../Saved Games/DCS/fxo & metashaders2 dirs so I'll clear those out as well.

Thanks!

Unfortunately not.  It's highly unpredictable and I could never conclusively tie it to any mod, type of mission, or action I was taking after a mission began.  I've seen it on both the Caucasus and Mariana's maps which are where I spend nearly all of my time.  It's like everything's fine and then bang...the ocean is gone.  And of course replaying the track of the mission doesn't repeat the problem.  Extremely frustrating as 95% of my missions are carrier based 🙄

That's not good then.

I've been playing the channel map quite a bit recently without any problems at all.

Which map were you playing that had the problems 20 minutes into the mission?
