WRCRob Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Hi VR flyers! I have been exploring the idea of switching to VR for DCS and other games, but I have not been able to find the answer that I am looking for. I I've the immersion of a headset, but I want to retain the functionality of the sim pit that I was planning on expanding in the coming year (already have working mfds and DCS ufc on a tablet). I know that many devices have a "pass through" capability to transition from the game graphics to the "real world" but I have not been able to find any tutorials or articles on how to set it up so that when I look down I see my simpit vs the 3d cockpit. Any help would be appreciated!
Taz1004 Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 The way you're thinking of using, is not common because passthrough implementation is very rough. I have not seen a good one yet. Camera being low resolution is one thing but all physical camera lens have distortion. So it actually gets a bit disorienting. Another issue will be that switching between sim pit and VR pit will not be instant. I have tried it and immediately discarded the idea. InfinityWingman Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 I've had limited success with this idea using OVR toolkit to overlay a webcam that is focused on my physical controls. I've also tried mounting the webcam to my VR goggles so that it tracks with my head movements. I gave up on it mainly because it requires running SteamVR and I have the Oculus Rift. In my case, there's a bad performance hit in VR by having to run SteamVR. It was by no means perfect, but it did work. In VR, you can move the webcam window to the lower part of your field of view and so it did help to orientate to physical controls. You can also play youtube vides or anything else in VR as an overlay while you are flying, but not all that useful to me. Hope that helps. It's been awhile, so maybe there are better alternatives to OVR toolkit. Maybe I'll look at it again. I managed to get this working with OVR Drop, but instead of a regular webcam I used my old (and othwise completely unused) Gopro Hero 3, plugged into a usb with a cheap camlink. Works really well as the Gopro has a very wide angle setting so easy to include a keyboard in the view with the camera only a foot above. I'll probably never use it in DCS VR to be honest, but useful when using a virtual desktop in Steam VR. (You an FZ fan from your handle ?) RICCARDO_85 Posted September 23, 2021 Posted September 23, 2021 Hi all. I have quest 2 and I want to see the real mfd in vr. The pass throught can make it possible. With the camera on the quest 2,i want only the mfd's frame and the keyboard. I see the tutorial with unity but, someone make it yet?
RICCARDO_85 Posted September 23, 2021 Posted September 23, 2021 Yes but... This is with varjo vr headset. Is the same thing possible with quest 2? I see the tutorial that make the zone of pass throught. I don't know if it is possible on dcs with quest 2. All tutorial that I see on web is about unity works... Did anyone achieve it without unity program?
L0ngbow Posted September 23, 2021 Posted September 23, 2021 I think it can work with the Quest 2 if they really wanted to, but the resolution of the outward camera would be an issue me thinks.
