Ribis Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Currently it seems that SA-2 can shoot down F-117 from huge distances, even with low skill value. But with the F16/ F18 I can scan the Night Hawk only at realy close range. Might be a bug.
Flappie Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 (edited) Here are two tracks showing F-117 flying over a Russian SAM field (SA-2, SA-3, SA-6, SA-8 and SA-15). Only SA-6 was unable to shoot at her. Seeing as I don't know much about the F-117 stealth capabilites (I only know she got shot down at least once over Serbia), I let you guys debate. Ribis Posted January 26, 2021 Author Posted January 26, 2021 Thank you so much for doing this. I saw the same in all of my sessions, these are quite big with over 40 aircraft in the sky. Even if the Hawk flyes in over 35.000 feet with 0.8mach at nighttime.
Capn kamikaze Posted February 1, 2021 Posted February 1, 2021 (edited) The one over serbia was a bit of a special case, the SAM commander set a trap for it, he knew when and were it was likely to be, so had his SAM lanuchers and radars set up to be in the optimal position to hit it, also there are claims that the radars used were modified, and stealth aircraft have to be designed with particular threat radars in mind, they're only stealthy in a narrow band of radio frequencies, if you modify a radar to work outside that then the stealth ability is deminished or even eliminated. ED Team NineLine Posted February 10, 2021 ED Team Posted February 10, 2021 I'll look into it, I believe its come up before, but stealth modelling in DCS is pretty simplistic currently I believe. Forum Rules • My YouTube • My Discord - NineLine#0440• **How to Report a Bug**

From what I've learned is what the radar technicians did was to look at the aircraft from whatever source they could get and than guestimate sizes of the panels used on the F117. They found that approximately 2 meters of flat panel was used somewhere on the aircraft and tailored their radar to emit in the VHF range (around 150Mhz). as with all metals that are hit by radiowaves and their length corresponding to the wavelength, it begins to acts as an antenna and the return of that signal is alot stronger than using any other frequency. This allowed them to track the stealth aircraft and fire a missile at it. Also, as Kamikaze pointed out, they knew what and where it was coming, making searching for it a whole lot easier.
