Marcq Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 Since DCS wont be supporting Win 7 any longer I have no choice to upgrade to 10, any advice before I do? Thanks, Marc..
Yurgon Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 A backup is always a good idea. The more important your data, the more important a recent backup (in other words: if you don't have a backup, the data isn't important). That said, I've updated about a half dozen Win 7 and Win 8.1 PCs to Win 10 and it worked flawlessly in every single case. The only bit of preparation you might want to do is figure out ahead of time how to tune Win 10 to be the least intrusive into your privacy, if such a thing concerns you. Personally, I've taken something like an hour per PC to go through the various settings and switching almost every convenience feature off because I'm old fashioned, and then another 20 minutes for Edge (the new Internet Explorer) alone. But as far as DCS is concerned, none of this should even be necessary. Another word of advice, Microsoft absolutely wants you to sign up with them and synchronize everything with your MS account. Actually, they want you to log into your PC with your Microsoft account, not a local account. There used to be a button like "Skip account creation" and one could then continue with a local account, if one so desires (I do, obviously). If the "Skip" button is no longer there, it should work okay to go back one step, pull the LAN cable or switch off WiFi and try again. Win 10 will then begrudgingly offer to go ahead with a local account for the time being, and will politely ask you later whether you prefer an MS account, which should then be easy enough to brush off with an equally polite "No thanks, I'd prefer to stick to a local account if you don't mind".
Yurgon Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Small and mostly off-topic side-note: It was just earlier today that I found a slightly concerning piece of information about Edge. Last year I had signed up with MS to get access to the FS2020 beta (they never invited me, and I forgot about the account). With the latest version of Edge being roled out these days, it had reverted mostly to factory settings, so I checked all the settings and was annoyed to find that it would send everything I enter into the address bar to Bing in order to "help" me find what I'm looking for, plus a whole slew of other annoying settings that, apparently, browsers need to ship with these days because MS thinks people are too stupid to wipe their behinds without MS's help. That, and Edge had my profile set up to synchronize the browser with the MS account I had created exclusively for FS2020 and the XBox Game Pass. I'm pretty sure I never asked nor allowed Edge to do anything of the kind. It's like the GDPR never happened. It gives me this warm and comfy feeling, knowing that MS are still very much the same crooked bunch of gangsters they always were, despite all their attempts to do slightly better on the outside.

Yurgon Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 And one more semi off-topic side-note, sorry about the continued ranting: Before I managed to configure Edge to basically greet me with a blank page and (hopefully) not send anything anywhere unless I specifically instructed it to do so, I accidentally saw all the news it presented to me on the start page. It's that kind of tabloid "news" that basically no one in their right mind ever cares about (some people obviously do, but that's beside the point). I thought these were the most dull and boring news of all times. So that warm and comfy feeling is strengthened by the conclusion that despite all their borderline illegal data gathering activities, Microsoft are still utterly incompetent at presenting me with anything remotely tailored to me or my interests. 6 minutes ago, Taz1004 said: That's nothing compared to what Google does. Oh I agree! But that venture into off-topic land seemed too far a stretch even for me to go there.

Worrazen Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 (edited) 9 hours ago, Marcq said: Since DCS wont be supporting Win 7 any longer I have no choice to upgrade to 10, any advice before I do? Thanks, Marc.. Well if I give you the pro advice, the most fundamental thing is to not "upgrade", but to buy a new disk (SSD/HDD) and install a fresh copy of Win10 on there, keep your Win7 or whatever and everything intact, so you can use the system while you deal with configuring the new OS, you might have to redo things, this requires more experience and will probably set you on a path that may take some time, but it may be worth it depending on your priorities and how much the current system matters to you. Upgrading from Win7 to Win10 has it's risks, you might get problems that you wouldn't on a clean install, but I can't comment further because I've never dealt with it and I don't know how good and reliable this feature is. This is regarded as a gimmick if you ask a pro, it's a huge convenience feature, with a lot of automation and assumption and "doing things for you", and as a general rule huge conveniences usually do things that are not what a proper system administrator would want to do if the goal was to do it right with all the best and surest practices. But it may just work, tho, that "work" may be slightly illusory because none of the pro users use this feature unless they purposelly want to test it, and most people who would tell you that it works are the average users who don't have the experience to detect and notice a lot of clues and issues except some key few obvious ones. You can also create a custom Win10 ISO with NTLite, from the ISO you receive/download as part of purchase of Win10 license. This has to be done before you actually install it. NTLite is paid (for full version) but you can use free solutions such as Sophia Script and other debloater scripts which may be harder to use/follow and would be executed on a live system after you install the OS, do not run any of these scripts on your current Win7, once you run them, the script may not support roll-back, once it's done and it didn't work out right, you would need to start over reinstalling Win10. Either way it's all more involved so you would need to take time to learn/educate about this on the web, the paid option may be easier because it's all done in a nice GUI and has more features/capabilities in some cases. The Win10 I'm running and typing from now was created by NTLite, with my custom profile, by the way. Excerpt of a NTLite XML profile for example: Spoiler <RemoveComponents> <c>actioncenter 'Action Center'</c> <c>alljoyn 'AllJoyn Router Service'</c> <c>appid 'Application Identity Service'</c> <c>appv 'Application Virtualization (App-V)'</c> <c>appxsupport32 'Modern App support - For example I very rarely use Wi-FI on the main PC so I removed many of extra Wi-Fi components but keeping key things just so it works if I need it in an emergency, there's a bunch of enterprise/workstation components I'll never need, at least on this PC / this installation, then I've removed most of the UWP bloatware including the whole Windows Store it self and associated services that automatically run things in the background and manage things and anything that automatically downloads things from the web, among with other configs and tweaks outside of a custom ISO which I don't want to get into because this is whole thing is a big topic, custom ISO is half of the thing, there's around 3-5 days of work after I've installed to finish all the other settings, program setups, drivers, browser configurations, networking, group policy and registry settings, but man it's worth it, well, you have to be a special person who enjoys this and a week of fiddling with this isn't a problem, so yeah, not everyone would agree necessairly, but it is rewarding, it should be rock stable, only the internal bugs that are present in this version of Win10 it self that nobody can predict can be a problem if they emerge months or years down the line, so yeah it can be very risky, you spend 2 weeks setting things up then you figure out a month later some important program can't work because of some little issue that can't be resolved and you're basically forced to start over, however with NTLite, or any custom ISO method, you get the benefit of saving time not having to configure it or create a new ISO from scratch, you just reinstall with the pre-defined settings and removed components, so I guess you do save quite a bit of time, plus, once one has experience with this over many iterations, it goes a lot faster than the first time, that's why it's easy to me because I've got the whole process documented and I practically have it all in my head I just know it like second nature what I need to do step by step, I have all the notes to remind myself and that's it, so it can sound a lot easier than it is, but yeah it may be really hard for someone new, however if anyone serious needs extra help you can send PM (but I only have limited time, this is more than off-the-cuff help, this is exhaustive work) I'm still rather testing things with this install too and I need to be careful that I don't blame the games/programs if some bugs arise from this, so far all games work flawlessly. Windows experience, shortcuts and settings stuff in this case obviously have some annomalies and broken-ness to it, but this is to be expected, like the Internet Settings in the Network Icon on the taskbar doesn't work so I have access it from elsewhere, among other similar things, in case it's no problem at all, most importantly it doesn't affect the core and any other program. On a previous Win10 install, years ago, I've experimented manually in the Registry and deleted some keys I hoped were to cleanup some stuff, unfortunately, a bunch of things broke, like the "Open As" dialog when you try to open a file extension that has no associated program to it, and the USB Devices icon in the Taskbar would not work, so I couldn't "safely remove" any of my attached USBs that way, I had to go into Start -> Settings -> Devices and then remove things from there, still not a big deal. As for the license key, I did a completely fresh Win 10 installation on completely new hardware and gave it my Win 7 Ultimate key. Windows 10 was happy with it. Last time I did that was just about a year ago for a friend and it still worked; I think his was Win 7 Home or something like that, so it seems it doesn't even need an Ultimate key. Microsoft really really want people to go for Windows 10 if they're still allowing the free fresh installation with old keys. 47 minutes ago, Marcq said: Thanks, That was 6 years ago, is it still relevant? From my perspective that's a solid yes. I have all the same boxes unticked, but I definitely learned some new stuff there, and it turns out some recent update also screwed with one of those settings I consider privacy relevant. I like the idea of deleting services, never knew that was even possible.
Beirut Posted February 7, 2021 Posted February 7, 2021 3 hours ago, Marcq said: Thanks, That was 6 years ago, is it still relevant? Marc.. I think it's relevant in the sense of what direction to take with Win10. Knowing that Win10 wants you to be the product and to then sell you and your info to whomever is still good to know. Once you know it, you can at least try to stop it or at least limit it as much as possible. Some of the planes, but all of the maps!
