What I'm saying RT is, the reason you won't see the Z or W for that matter, has nothing to do with the controls or controller. It has to do with what I previously stated...

How is Camp Pendleton, Ghost? Havent been there in ages. Was stuck in 14 area for the longest time.

Can't really speak for the 14 area hitman. But the 23 area has been changing a lot over the years. I've been here since '93. We've got 46s, Ws, Ns, Ys and Zs. We're last on the list for the V22.

I got ya now. :)

Both the W and Z would be great to do someday, but at this time we simply lack the needed data to them properly.

Just out of curiosity, is it especially because of these aircraft or is this a Marine Corps thing? Just wondering because the USN also seems to keep their cards close while the USAF seems more open regarding manuals.

Ive yet to see a Z outside of the Bell plant in Hurst, Tx. And from what Ive heard and seen, I wouldnt want the V22 anytime soon.

MBot, we're still verifying manuals for the Z. Hitman, I've seen plenty both at China Lake and here. The V22 seems to be doing okay in combat. But when you have the support staff they do, how could it fail? ;)

Oh whatever, the Apache is money. Hell even if I got Kiowas flying around I feel safe. The Z isn't as maneuverable as the Apache so there goes that option for CCA, next!

Huh? As far as I know, the Z and Y is as maneuverable if not more, as the AH64. Especially with the new head.

ok, this seems as a good a thread as any to ask..

I'm reading "Apache" the Ed Macy (pen name for a British apache driver ) talking about driving the Apache Mk1 (British Mod of the AH64d) , and claims it is a better bird than the US Longbow due to superior engines and defensive counter measures....

True?

In all fairness, its not maneuverability that gets the best out of standoff ranges. Even so, the Apache has been just a waste of money from the get-go. It didnt do too well in the first gulf war, where sand screwed up the avionics, it didnt do too well in panama, since water screwed up the avionics, and certainly never lived up to its expectation. The cobra has been around since Vietnam, and thats saying something. Even now, Apaches get shot down in higher numbers than Cobras from what I read in the news.

Aint hard to shoot an apache down...the massive pylons on the side of the cockpit holds all the avionics and weaponry computers. Shooting down helis, of course, can be said about any helicopter serving combat duty. Its not all that, thats all. A radar doesnt make it the sh1t. Its a smart pilot and WSO.

Odd, since my Apache unit maintained a fully mission capable rate of 93% during the first Gulf War, and my unit had the most direct fire tank kills in the entire 1st Cavalry Division

Not difficult considering the number of Apaches in combat compared to the number of Cobras.

Well this is just as true (if not more so) for a Cobra than an Apache, but I would argue that all helicopters are easy to shoot down.

This is indusputable. ;)

So did the A-10, but the A-10 proved to be too good for their expectations. The Apache had numerous and well known avionics and guidance issues, and had poor avionics performance in Panama from the moisture. The A-10 can do the Apaches job and do it wonderfully. Granted the Apache was upgraded many times since then...then again so was the Cobra.

Tax dollars in action? If I spent 24 million on an attack heli and claimed it hard core, I would put it to work too. Doesnt make it any better than the Cobras.

Here is an interesting read...this is some of the main reasons why I oppose the AH-64.

Well, after playing with, AH64s UH60s, AH1Ws, SH60s, UH1Ys and AH1Zs for the past 19+ years, I'd say they all have a role for each of the services. It all boils down to (IMO) tactics. The US Army has theirs (still using pop up acquisition?), the US Marine Corps has theirs (run and gun). Those mentioned all use the same engine line, that's why I've played with them all ;)

I always liked SFTT, but I do think they tend to be comprised od "old schoolers" who liked things the way they were. I will not argue that the Apache has had problems, and will continue to have problems. I also will not argue that the Cobra is a great aircraft. However, my own personal experience with the Apache, combined with the experience of the several ex-Apache pilots who are currently my coworkers, have proven to me the value of the Apache. I won't bother arguing which is the better aircraft, I think it's clear that each has its virtues and vices, and for certain tasks, one will be better suited than the other. For current missions, it may seem that the Cobra is a better platform, but who knows exactly what will e the better platform for the next conflict or mission set? I believe that the Apache has, over time, proven itself as a reliable platform and an extremely capable aircraft, and I dislike seeing it bashed. As always, the truth is never black and white, but shades of gray. But shades of gray don't sell newspapers (or make for entertaining reading on SFTT), so issues will always be made to look black and white for the sake of drama.
