Hello kind pilots, here is my probelm...

So I will write down all of my components right here:

CPU ---> Intel Core I7 8700K 3.70 GHz (https://www.amazon.com/Intel-i7-8700K-Desktop-Processor-Unlocked/dp/B07598VZR8/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&hvadid=77790517240465&hvbmt=bb&hvdev=c&hvqmt=b&keywords=core+i7+9700k&qid=1623684884&sr=8-4)

GPU ---> GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING X 8G (https://www.msi.com/Graphics-Card/support/GeForce-GTX-1080-GAMING-X-8G.html)

RAM---> HyperX Fury 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 2133MHz DRAM (https://www.newegg.com/hyperx-16gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820104674?Description=16gb ram hyperx&cm_re=16gb_ram hyperx-_-20-104-674-_-Product)

Motherboard ---> MSI Z370 A PRO (https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z370-A-PRO)

Tell me if you want the rest of it but I think it's what you have to know.

So here is my problem, I began to play dcs some time ago and didn't really have problems with anything, it was all running great at high settings but as the updates went to come I incountered this issue... I am lagging a lot and what I mean by lagging is a frozen screen for multiple secconds, sometimes long enough to make me crash my plane while I can't do anything... It is very annoying and happens mainly when I'm close to other players.

So I don't know if it's a computer hardware problem. I lowered my settings, but it still lags, and the game runs just fine in solo with even higher settings.

Is it maybe my RAM ? I have 16go and I saw that the recommended config was with 16go ram (they are maybe talking about playing in solo, right ?).

When I checked the benchmarks while playing I didn't get much higher than 14go so I don't know...

If the RAM wasn't the problem then I thought: maybe my connection is.

I did mulltiple speedtests and always got similar results which are 45 Mbps in download and 20Mbps in upload. Are these numbers too low(maybe the upload in particular).

I don't know what I can do more, maybe I should reinstall DCS ? I also checked if it was running in all of the logical processors but it already was, so no problem there...

 I'll try to lower my settings even more than what it is now but I find it weird that with this config it has that much of a problem running it in multiplayer but again maybe it's not my config, (it runs perfectly in solo with heavy missions)...

Thank you for hellping me out...

normally people who play multiplayer would recommend 32gb of RAM, but it can be very map or scenario dependent

Could that explain the long loading screens?

It takes me 10 to 15 minutes to join a server (the ping doesn't change anything).

it could be, try reducing terrain textures to low, which also might help the load time

Is DCS installed on a SSD?

I have the exact same CPU, but 32GB RAM and a SSD, it takes exactly 30 seconds to join Growling Sidewinder server after a fresh start of DCS. At that point DCS is occupying 12GB of RAM (working set on task manager, normally its a hidden column). I know it doesn't help you much but it is a benchmark.

10-15 minutes to join a server is not normal at all.

Please reproduce this issue and attach your dcs.log file ( C:\Users\username\Saved Games\DCS...\Logs\dcs.log - may appear as "dcs" ).

I'll also need your dxdiag log (how to obtain it).

You can check your RAM to see if it's OK using Windows Memory Test.

Please run the following command in a "cmd" window and paste the result here: wmic pagefile list /format:list

Is it overheating?, with your description it seems like it slows down due to overheat, when was the last time you removed old CPU paste and put a new one on? Computer clean of dust?

Not really when I check the temps they're always between 60 to 65° so doesn't seem like a overheat probem. Tho, I never replaced the CPU paste which is 3 years old now. There's no dust inside I clean it every month since the pc case is built with anti-dust system.

dcs.log That's the logs of my DCS openbeta (I play on openbeta), do you need the normal one?

Here is the other thing you asked:

For the RAM I don't really know, it seems like it's blocked at 14go to not overheat it or something, but that also means I need more RAM, no?

DxDiag.txt

Here is what I got in the Command Promt:

AllocatedBaseSize=15988
CurrentUsage=671
Description=D:\pagefile.sys
InstallDate=20210611235441.169092+120
Name=D:\pagefile.sys
PeakUsage=8097
Status=
TempPageFile=FALSE

Many thanks. I see your pagefile is stored on an HDD (D:\) ,which is probably the source of your lag. Your C:\ drive is almost full (12 GB of free space).

This is what you need to do:

  1. Free up some space in your NVMe drive (C:\) by moving some files to your D:\
  2. Once you have enough free space in your C:\ (minimum 32 GB), ask Windows to move your pagefile to your C:\ drive. This should make things better for yor DCS sessions.
  3. On the long term, consider buying a new NVMe or SSD drive.

Hey I got some free time now, but don't really know how to do that second step....

If you have enough room on your C:\ drive, try rebooting. Maybe Windows will see the change and move the pagefile to C:\ by itself.

If it doesn't, this guide will help you out to manually set your pagefile on C:\ : https://mcci.com/support/guides/how-to-change-the-windows-pagefile-size/

Once in the pagefile menu, uncheck "Automatically...", select C:\ drive, and set these sizes:

  • initial size: 16384 (= 16 GB)
  • max size: 16384 (= 16 GB)

Then hit "Set" and "OK".

Just did it, thanks!  What does it do tho?

An O.S. (Windows, Linux, macOS...) relies on RAM to load programs and files. RAM allows very fast data transfers.

Some programs can use a LOT of resources. DCS is among them. They need to load so many data RAM is not enough. Here comes the pagefile. This is a huge file stored on a drive which can hold data coming from RAM. Its speed is way lower than the RAM speed, but it helps anyway. When data stored in RAM has not been used for some time, Windows transfer it to its pagefile. And if a program needs this data again, Windows does the opposite (pagefile -> RAM).

Conclusion : the fastest your pagefile is, the better your game experience will be (less loading times, less lag...).

Please get back here soon to give us your feedback.

Hello so after some testing, it is much much better! It only takes betewen 1:30 to 5 minutes to join a server so that's a lot better and I have no longer these huge lags. I will stil go for an ssd and more RAM to be sure.

Thanks a lot, you're saving lives! 😛
