Yesterday i wanted to try multiplayer for the first time, but i got stuck right at the most trivial thing - how to open the chat and write something. I had to spend several minutes trying the different chat keys, trying to figure out what the hell is happening because the name of the key bings very confusing.

In the control settings there are 4 entries related to chat

  • Chat show/hide
  • Multiplayer chat All
  • Multiplayer chat Allies
  • Multiplayer chat read/write all

but almost none of them do what one would expect.

The "Chat show/hide" key does nothing at all, or at least i haven't noticed anything.

The "Multiplayer chat All" actually shows and hides the chat in read-only mode, something i would expect from the first key.

The "Multiplayer chat Allies" is the only that does what it says and that is it opens the chat windows for writing and set the mode to Allies.

And the "Multiplayer chat read/write all" then does what i would expect from the second key and that is it opens the chat for writing with mode set to All.

Is this a bug or i have a fundamental misunderstanding of what the names mean?

I don't know how the controls are called and can't check right now, but from memory the keys and functions are as follows:

- TAB opens/closes the chat

- CTRL + TAB opens team chat

- SHIFT + TAB opens all chat

Having said this, I noticed an issue in the past few weeks (open beta), where those buttons sometimes don't seem to work properly. I haven't really investigated it, but there seems to be something fishy about it lately.

Indeed the chat buttons do not work correctly. Sometime's you have to ALT+TAB then go back in and they work a few time's. It's been really inconsistent since the patch a few weeks ago. Haven't tested since the patch yesterday came out but nothing was in the notes.

@QuiGon I had to check the defaults because i never use default settings. They are currently set as follows

  • Chat show/hide - LCTRL+LSHIFT+Y
  • Multiplayer chat All - Tab
  • Multiplayer chat Allies - LCTRL+Tab
  • Multiplayer chat read/write all - LSHIFT+Tab

So it seems it works as you describe and the default keybinding kinda makes sense, but the naming of the key actions is nonsensical.

Chat show/hide

You know, in multiplayer missions, you see the envelope icon that means you have got new messages.

This function removes the envelope (until you enable it again), and you'll never see the icon even if you have got new messages.

But, nowadays these keybindings may not work properly because something is wrong with SHIFT and CTRL keys.

They work in rotation. 😄 Sorry, this may be wrong expression.

You hit SHIFT+TAB to type something. You did type and sent and hit TAB again to close type box.

If you want to type something again, SHIFT+TAB won't work for you at second time.

You need to hit CTRL key once, and now SHIFT+TAB will work. 😄

This bug needs to be fixed urgently!

That's it!!!

I was thinking I'm going crazy as I couldn't figure out what was wrong with the chat keys as they sometimes seemed to work fine, but then suddenly didn't work, just to suddenly work fine again.

I really hope ED fixes this soon, as it is incredible frustrating if you think you have activated the chat window and want to write something, just to notice that the chat isn't open and you just have pressed all kinds of key bindings that mess up your aircraft! @BIGNEWY@NineLine
