randomTOTEN Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 I'm hearing conflicting reports. This applies to after allowing the operator gyros to tumble (for whatever reason). Usually identified by me as having the optics looking in a random direction, while the azimuth scale at the bottom of the sight shows pointing forward. Has anybody had any success realigning the gyro in flight? (I.E. the sight correctly indicates the current relative heading.) Some people say you can do it by restarting the entire sighting system. Some people say you have to get the aircraft repaired. I've never been able to realign the gyros in flight. Has anybody done it? I haven't tried a repair either because we either have a lost connection or crash before we could try a repair. Does tumbling the gyros for the sight cause them permanent damage? Would greatly appreciate any insight. 1
Czechnology Posted September 21, 2021 Posted September 21, 2021 To my understanding it's not a matter of realigning when it stops working, it's that the gyros are entirely broken. I've not heard similar rumors, but you'd definitely need a friend in the front seat to try it.
Grennymaster Posted September 24, 2021 Posted September 24, 2021 Its not possible to re align the Gyro System. Its not an electrical system. If you oversteer it with the bird, the internal parts will break. So its realistic. Thats what i get form former Pilots of the system.
QuiGon Posted September 24, 2021 Posted September 24, 2021 Is it possible to break them with Petrovich in the front seat or does he reliably shut the sights on his own before this happens? I made a habit of explicitly telling him to shut the sights before starting to maneuver as I'm not sure how reliably he does it on his own. Intel i7-12700K @ 8x5GHz+4x3.8GHz + 32 GB DDR5 RAM + Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 (8 GB VRAM) + M.2 SSD + Windows 10 64Bit DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!

I was pretty sure he does shut the sights when the bank angle of the aircraft gets too high. As the pilot you can even see how the ATGM crosshair disappears. admiki Posted September 25, 2021 Posted September 25, 2021 That was the case when Mi24 dropped. Now it most definitelly is not, when I forget to tell him to do so I will get red light on instrument panel

I made a habit of explicitly telling him to shut the sights before starting to maneuver as I'm not sure how reliably he does it on his own. I believe the quick start said he does it according to a certain amount of cyclic movement. So if you do it fast or use rudder to help roll it’s possible to roll too far before he closes the doors. In my experience it’s only happened a few times but also I always try to down short command him to close the doors before turning so I would only know how well he does it from when I forget. if I knew he could do it reliably that would be great becuase you don’t get the delay you get from telling him to shut it off with down short, and when you roll back and he opens everything he just looks straight ahead and spots what he sees, which is a fantastic tool to have that I wish could he implemented, a command to say “look forward and spot anything you see” or to “scan a large area.” one way I’ve accomplished this for long journeys that don’t require me to turn hard is to designate just in front of me, once you exceed gimbal limits he naturally turns it off and will look straight ahead, and when he sees something around the heading of your original designation he will lock it.
