SunDown Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 (edited) That has a nice ring to it doesn't it. Listen, I know ED and the beta team has alot on their plate. Whether its closing the loop on current projects or starting the development cycle on new projects, BUT..... I think it would be pretty sweet to have a sanctioned DCS ground school. Bear with me here...just an examination that covers what pilots should know prior to liftoff per the manual. Upon completion, you get the title DCS Ground School Grad. I think it would promote a culture of learning and getting under the hood of this sim. Edited November 13, 2008 by SunDown C Co 6-6 CAV USLANTCOM
leafer Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 (edited) You mean like a DCS Ground School approved by ED? Or some kind of test(s) in the game itself where a player has to pass before getting flight time? I'd vote for the latter if that's what you meant. Edited November 13, 2008 by leafer ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
Shepski Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Lesson #1: Trim, trim, and trim some more! The trimmer is your freind. #2: Using auto hover under about 5 meters will shut down 3 of the 4 channels of the autopilot stability system and losing this vital function that close to the ground can cause for many a bent bird. #3: If you find the chopper changes from a stable docile machine to a wild bronco with a mind of it's own... look down and check the autopilot stability channels because they probably aren't engaged. #4: Trim some more. 1
SunDown Posted November 13, 2008 Author Posted November 13, 2008 No maybe just a word document with questions. But questions that would make you dig through the manual. I dont know...maybe that is just dumb...lol C Co 6-6 CAV USLANTCOM

I've often wanted a test within the sim that you'd have to graduate before you could fly...in a career mode or something! RvETito Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Why did we spend so much time making tha manual and the training tracks then? They ARE the ground school that you're supposed to pass before goin' into battle. To add something to what Shepski wrote: #5- Trim, trim and more trim. #6- Forget about autohover. #7- Go back again to #1, #4, #5 :D "See, to me that's a stupid instrument. GGTharos Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 It is a nice idea, but highly impractical. It would mean ED would have to put some quality controls on training, and so on and so forth. No one has the time for this. Even informal training - many of us have our hands full enough training our own guys in our own squads. Some squads might invite non-members on a limited basis for such things however. No, don't look my way. ;) 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
SunDown Posted November 13, 2008 Author Posted November 13, 2008 Its all good. I was just rolling it around. I'm sure the community will come up with something. I think alot of pilots have recognized that this sim isn't just a point and shoot application. Alot of time will have to be put into mastering just the basic task of moving from hover to forward flight. C Co 6-6 CAV USLANTCOM
GGTharos Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Yup, like I said - it is a nice idea. If you guys can organize something it would be great. I'd love to drop by and have a look. Flying a few circuits alone and in friendly arspace is one thing....doing it in a combat zone is quiet another!!!! deviletk Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I would just like to hook up with some of you guys that arent in squads yet to have some practise flying together in MP. We all read the critical parts of the manual then we meet on a runway somewhere and practise. We share information between us as im sure everyone will have questions, and hopefully we will get tips from eachother and learn a little bit faster. And a little bit funnier. This is what i wanted with some friends of mine but im afraid the realistic mode scare them so im pretty much solo wich sucks a bit tbh. Pretty sure i wont be invited to someones server where missions are done to practise flying either lol. Some MP practise nights would make me happy anyway. How about some of you guys? SunDown Posted November 14, 2008 Author Posted November 14, 2008 You know I'm in. I was thinking of making some missions focusing on navigation and basic flying skills. After we get through that comfortably, maybe have a "weapons week" where we make missions that have a range type atmosphere and controlled fires. I think multiplayer with Teamspeak or whatever would make it alot more fun. Plus watching each other get sucked into a vortex ring is always fun :) C Co 6-6 CAV USLANTCOM

But his would also mean that only a CheckRide with a Instructor could guarantee this. Therefore you need a reliable staff, and this could much more workload than running a squad, ad so on... Maybe we will see this some day here. Edited November 14, 2008 by urze Leftside Limited - ideas and solutions

EvilBivol-1 Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Just want to point out that Black Shark does come with an extensive training module and a very thorough flight manual (550+ pages in the full version). I think it's worth remembering that most of the players flying right now have likely not had the benefit of these resources. When they have an opportunity to go through them properly, the competency level will grow substantially. Of course, the built-in training and the manuals are not a replacement for what is proposed here, which I would also love to see. If the community can find enough expert knowledge to put together a realistic virtual helicopter flight school - especially one that is based on Russian operations and even more especially one that includes realistic Russian combat helicopter operations - it would be nothing short of fantastic. - EB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Nothing is easy.
