When I reset the view in VR mode, it feels too close. In the A-10C, I have to turn around to access some of the radio switches and activate the HMD. Also the HUD is so close that some elements are off the edge. Is there a command to alter the sitting distance from the HUD? Or is there a way to adjust the zoom in and out, like in 2D?

Sure is

Lean forwards. Press cockpit re-center bind. Lean back to where you originally were

Also some cockpits seem to scale weird. There is a world scale setting in DCS (IPD). Play with the numbers there in case the scale of things is wrong

I have a similar complaint with the f14 which puts me up against the cockpit bow

That's what I've been doing, but it takes me a few tries to get the position perfect in the other two axes. I was hoping for a command that would move my POV on the Z axis without changing X and Y.

I thought IPD was my interpupillary distance, so I set that to the IPD that's on my glasses, and my VR headset.

There are options for camera view up/down, forward/back and left/right. Adjust until you are happy. I have to do this with a couple of modules so I have them bound to arrow keys on keyboard for ease each time I start.

The setting on your HMD depends on how big your head is in real life.  The setting in DCS is how big your virtual head is in-game.  If you set it small, you're like a little person barely able to see over the sill.  If you set it big, you're like Shaq trying to squeeze into a teeny tiny cockpit.  You can set it anywhere in between those extremes looks right for you, or just play with it (and I'll admit, it's about thirty minutes' worth of silly fun) or if you have OCD you can turn on the pilot body and adjust IPD so your body "looks right."  Or do like most people do, ignore it

I use

Num 5 - center view

then RCtrl RShift NUM 8-6-2-4 to center the view and RCtrl RSHIFT NUM / and * to move forward or backward.

Saving with RCTRL RALT NUM 0

I played with the IPD and got the HUD sizing sorted out. I still have to turn more than 90 degrees to activate the radio and HMD, but I currently only do those on the ground. If I ever need to do them under stress, I'll set up keyboard shortcuts, or install voice attack.

I can't remember the exact binding names, I think it might be "Cockpit camera" or just "camera" but I assure you this just moves the position of your head around and this is saved for the duration of the flight. So when you recentre it flips to this position. I currently do this every time I load into the hind, as I am too far away by default. I have those controls bound to my arrow keys as I am not able to press multiple keyboard keys in VR. I don't bother with binding left or right as its usually only up//down or forward/back I need.  No impact on FOV, no adverse impacts on HUDs. Basically like moving your seat in those aircraft where you can -this has exactly the same effect.

I tried "cockpit camera move L/R/U/D" under A-10C II real, while sitting on the runway in an A-10C II instant action mission. Using those key commands didn't move the view.

But they should move your view, those commands (and the forward / backward ones) works fine here so something is off on your side.
