I cannot figure out how should I use Tacan navigation to find the tanker in the air. I am doing all by the book as describled in the Chuck`s manual. But it seems it doesn`t work for me. Tacan frequency just doesn`t change, you can see on the video bellow.

For the tanker, I set the channel 22X, but no matter what I do, I cannot make it work, so I would have a takan bearing to the tanker.

Hey Skywalker22,

do you know how far you were from the tanker when you tried to tune its TACAN signal? Maybe I´m just guessing, but I found it from time to time impossible to catch the TACAN signal if tanker was too far away from me. It´s very same with other TACAN beacons as well, probably due to signal strenght weakening with distance.

Just check if this was not your case.

Agreed. I have seen this w/ both the carrier and land airbases. I don't know if there is a standard max distance or not. I usually cheat a little, look at the F10 map, and figure my own bearing. At some point I try tacan again and there it is.

I'm not sure if it is common practice to place the tanker below neighboring mountain top levels...

no its  not  but if  your  flying low  level  and  behind  a mountain

A TACAN is a short range, UHF, line-of-sight air navigation system that provides continuous, accurate slant-range distance and bearing information.

TACAN stations had a range of up to 390 nautical miles and operate in the frequency band from 960-1215 MHz.16 June 2020

What I'm trying to say is, by the time I'm looking for a tanker on TACAN, I'm not down low any more. Your mileage might vary.
