pushcart2012 Posted July 3, 2022 Posted July 3, 2022 (edited) I just bought a Ryzen 7 5800 chip, (8 core..). New motherboard. I already have 48gig Ram. SSD drives, Niveda GPU. I am reading that DCS does not use 8 cores. Did I just waste my money? I have $2000 in Joystick, throttle, and Rudder. 5 touch screens, Android, and Win 11 comp. If so, were should I have put my money. advice please. Edited July 3, 2022 by pushcart2012

I'm sorry to say that yes, you did waste it a bit ... take a look at the Passmark benchmark for your processor: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Ryzen+7+5800X&id=3869 While it gets a total passmark of 28,182 note that using a single core its passmark is 3,451 (as the 7 other cores are not "working") Now take a look at the Ryzen 5600X, which only has 6 cores but is otherwise very similar to yours, with just 0.1 GHz less frequency: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Ryzen+5+5600X&id=3859 Having only 6 cores gives it a passmark rating of 22,017 which shows that on multicore apps like Photoshop it would be 30% slower ... however look at its single core passmark: 3,359 ... so, on apps that don't use more than 6 cores (like DCS) it would perform about the same as the more costlier processor. However, ED is supossedly working on a multithreaded DCS, where having more cores could (maybe) be beneficial and would allow your 5800X to shine better For work: iMac mid-2010 of 27" - Core i7 870 - 6 GB DDR3 1333 MHz - ATI HD5670 - SSD 256 GB - HDD 2 TB - macOS High Sierra For Gaming: 34" Monitor - Ryzen 3600 - 32 GB DDR4 2400 - nVidia RTX2080 - SSD 1.25 TB - HDD 10 TB - Win10 Pro - TM HOTAS Cougar Mobile: iPad Pro 12.9" of 256 GB

Svsmokey Posted July 3, 2022 Posted July 3, 2022 No , you did not waste your money...ED will soon take advantage of 8-core cpu's . As to upgrades , as LucShep pointed out , we need more info . But it is very easy to get caught up in the upgrade or settings vortexes , and lose sight of Why we're doing all this . Perhaps it is time to forgo all that for a while and spend more time flying ? 1 9700k @ stock , Aorus Pro Z390 wifi , 32gb 3200 mhz CL16 , 1tb EVO 970 , MSI RX 6800XT Gaming X TRIO , Seasonic Prime 850w Gold , Coolermaster H500m , Noctua NH-D15S , CH Pro throttle and T50CM2/WarBrD base on Foxxmounts , CH pedals , Reverb G2v2

That is a bit of wishful thinking, at least until we can actually test drive that multi-core support on DCS. Take for example Adobe Photoshop, which is a well known app that supports multicore since many years: "Photoshop generally runs faster with more processor cores, although some features take greater advantage of the additional cores than others. However, you’ll get diminishing returns with multiple processor cores: The more cores you use, the less you get from each additional core. Therefore, Photoshop doesn’t run four times as fast on a computer with 16 processor cores as on a computer with four cores. For most users, the increase in performance that more than six cores provide doesn’t justify the increased cost." source: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/optimize-photoshop-hardware-os.html#:~:text=Use a fast processor&text=Photoshop generally runs faster with, get from each additional core. pushcart2012 Posted July 3, 2022 Author Posted July 3, 2022 thanks guys, I need a bitc* slap of truth. Graphics Cards - Nvidia Geforce GTX - 1650 4 gig. Nvidia GTX 1050-TI- 4 gig PSU- 800watt, new motherboard is a ROC Strix B-550-F, New CPU is Ryzen - 5700G Already have 48gb Ram, 3- 2 gig SSD. Gun fighter Joystick, Virpil throttle, MFG Rudder.
Svsmokey Posted July 3, 2022 Posted July 3, 2022 Yeah , gpu should be next on the upgrade list . 9700k @ stock , Aorus Pro Z390 wifi , 32gb 3200 mhz CL16 , 1tb EVO 970 , MSI RX 6800XT Gaming X TRIO , Seasonic Prime 850w Gold , Coolermaster H500m , Noctua NH-D15S , CH Pro throttle and T50CM2/WarBrD base on Foxxmounts , CH pedals , Reverb G2v2
pushcart2012 Posted July 3, 2022 Author Posted July 3, 2022 ok the best things I heard from my flying buddy's is "bigger monitor" and the best advice was from "Svsmokey" " Spend more time flying". great advice I know I need a better GPU, But wow they cost more than my computer. I am so deep into DCS already a new graphic card is probably next.
pushcart2012 Posted July 3, 2022 Author Posted July 3, 2022 I also do a lot of video editing which is why I went with the 8-core processor, but I was afraid that DCS wasn't using all eight cores I had read that. thanks again to get guys for all your advice. So what Graphics card is everyone in love with for DCS?
pushcart2012 Posted July 3, 2022 Author Posted July 3, 2022 I'm running 7 screens but only one is the main viewport on my Nvidia gtx-1650. 2nd Monitor is on Nvidia gtx-1050-Ti the other 5 are touch screen tablets that are running on their own CPU/GPU (4 android, 1 win 11)
pushcart2012 Posted July 3, 2022 Author Posted July 3, 2022 I fly DCS A-102, and AH-64 pretty much exclusively these days. I didn't plan on it, but I've learned a lot about editing Lua scripts.
