Below your left elbow, waay at the back.  How French.

Seriously, what is it?

I'd imagine it is an ashtray. They certainly had them on some of their other aircraft, like the French Navy F8 Crusader.

I would love to read more about that but I couldn't find anything so far. It sounds absolutely bonkers to smoke in a fighter jet on a carrier but also very French.

Could you provide a source for that?

Of course it is. Please remember that it's certified for Gauloises Bleus, and Disque Bleu only in emergencies. Others require written approval by AAE and SGACC on a case-by case basis .

Only what I observed when we had some Crusaders deployed to Coningsby in 92/93.  We had a squadron feeder (cafe) and the FN pilots would have lunch with a glass of red wine before flying the afternoon sortie.  We thought it was a great idea but the management didn't. Different times... 🙂

Like you say, different times.  I sometimes fly with an ex-Aéronavale Super Étendard pilot.  I'll have to ask him next time - he's still a big smoker.
