Wags94 Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Okay, just bought this game for download (of course) 2 days ago, I already love this game. I do have an issue though. I cant do anything but fly the aricraft unless it gets choppy. Like, I can take-off, fly, and [sometimes xD] land safely. Anything else, such as combat, I get choppy and laggy. This is due to my video card, an NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE. I need a new one, any suggestions? My computer is a Gateway GT5618E. I've been thinking about getting an NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT for its price, will it run this game smoothly on medium settings? I also have another issue regarding my joystick (a Logitech Attack 3). I have the slider set for the collective, but when in-game, the collective seems unresponsive when I move the slider, but when I press numpad+ the collective responds just fine. Same with numpad-, it works. Can anybody shed some light? Never really had an issue configuring stuff with this joystick. "Don't tell mom I'm a pilot, she thinks I play piano at a whore house."
ED Team Glowing_Amraam Posted January 1, 2009 ED Team Posted January 1, 2009 Actually, ive been using the 8600GT for a long time now. I will soon do a mega upgrade in january, but the 8600GT will give you good results (fps) on medium settings. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgJRhtnqA-67pKmQ3A2GsgA ED youtube channel https://www.facebook.com/glowingamraam My facebook page
Wags94 Posted January 1, 2009 Author Posted January 1, 2009 Good to know ;) Thanks for the sharing. Good to know ;) It's kinda cool cause it was your video (edge, and the overview) that kinda helped me achieve the final decision to buy Black Shark, lol. Were you using the 8600GT when you made those videos? "Don't tell mom I'm a pilot, she thinks I play piano at a whore house."
SuperKungFu Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 the 8600 is a fairly decent card, I have it, but it you are going to upgrade, I recommend something a bit higher. like 8800 or above. But the graphics card is not the main problem, the cpu is the bottle neck. What is your cpu? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Wags94 Posted January 2, 2009 Author Posted January 2, 2009 Honestly, I cant really tell you. I simply dont know, I've never taken the time to figure out all of this stuff, that why in my first post I put a link over my computers name, you should find all the right info if you click on it. I dont know my computer's exact 'specs.' "Don't tell mom I'm a pilot, she thinks I play piano at a whore house."
thereminqblank Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 According to the Gateway Support site, the specifications for your PC say that it's an Athlon 64 X2 4400+ (2.3GHz) CPU. You could upgrade the CPU quite cheaply, but I'm not sure what kind of performance increase you would see going to, say, an Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.1GHz CPU. Also, the Gateway website says your PC has a 300W power supply. It may not be enough to run an nVidia 8600. I'm going by the BFG specs for the 8600 OC, but it says it requires a 325W PCI-e compliant power supply. You might be able to run the 8600 with you current power supply, you might not. Wags94 Posted January 2, 2009 Author Posted January 2, 2009 I know about the power supply, I plan on buying a new one. A Rosewill 550w powersupply. It meets the requirements and is cheap. I cant run the 8600GT with my current power supply because it doesn't come with a 6pin connector, I dont think. "Don't tell mom I'm a pilot, she thinks I play piano at a whore house."
CAT_101st Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 their are adapter plugs that turn 2 4 plugs into a 6 plug. With the money you'e going to spend on a power-supply and video card you should just save a few extra pennies and build your own, more powerful rig, a few months down the line. Judging from the specs that puter you have really isn't that great of a platform to upgrade off of. . Edited January 2, 2009 by LIONPRIDE - - - - - - - - TO FLY IS HEAVEN. Chukk Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 I have to agree with Lionpride. If your comfortable putting in a power supply/video card, your not that much farther from putting together a whole new system. With an upgraded RAM, CPU, Power supply, motherboard and video card your system will now be ready for all the current games and ED's next addon in 9 months! :)
Wags94 Posted January 2, 2009 Author Posted January 2, 2009 Well thats the thing, price. I have a 150$ budget right now (Lol, I'm just some teenage kid with christams/B-day money to burn) I had 200$ but spent 50 of it on DCS. Leaving me with only 150$. hats why I want to 8600GT and not a 8800GT or higher. On newegg, I can get a 8600GT and a 550w Powersupply for 130$ without tax. I have a Logitech and I have the collective set via the game itself, not the Logitech Profiler and it works just fine.
Nate--IRL-- Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 (edited) I would hold on the Power-supply for now, you should be fine with what you've got. If not you can purchase one later, but the power-supply in your computer (300w) should be able to handle it adequately. Also note that brand is VERY important when purchasing a Power-supply. A lot of the cheaper brands effectively lie about the Wattage the PSU supplies, which leads to random system crashes. Do some research, read many reviews, on PSUs before you buy. Nate Edit:- regarding the Graphics Cards power requirements your link says.... "Great card with a great price with rebate. Ran old and new apps well. Darn good gamer, old and new games. Low power, chipset is only 47 watts TDP, so good with smaller PSUs (says 300 watts on box). Vista drivers it comes with work for me." When I first installed Black Shark, the slider was already set to the collective, I havent changed anything to it. When I first looked at the axises (spelled correct?) There were already preset buttons and axises for my joystick. "Don't tell mom I'm a pilot, she thinks I play piano at a whore house."

Also, the PSU I plan on buying as gotten great reviews. "Don't tell mom I'm a pilot, she thinks I play piano at a whore house."
Rhino4 Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 My god, Wags94, your sig is hilarious.:D "Don't tell mom I'm a pilot..." LoL!

The guy in one of the reviews says it says on the box that only 300w are required. I don't know if the guy is telling the truth, but that sounds about right...

Wags94 Posted January 2, 2009 Author Posted January 2, 2009 What I'm worried about is the 6-pin connector. My current powersupply doesn't have one, either that or I cant find it. I'm sure I can run it (well at least now I know it will), but without that 6-pin, I dont think I can. "Don't tell mom I'm a pilot, she thinks I play piano at a whore house."
Wags94 Posted January 2, 2009 Author Posted January 2, 2009 Have you tried deleting the default setting through the simulator and reassigning the slider to the collective? No, sir, I have not, I'll try that later and post the results. by later, I mean a time when I'm not up waaaay past what I consider "bed-time." lol "Don't tell mom I'm a pilot, she thinks I play piano at a whore house."
Wags94 Posted January 2, 2009 Author Posted January 2, 2009 Okay, the results from deleting the default assignment and reassigning the slider were not good. The collective is still unresponsive. "Don't tell mom I'm a pilot, she thinks I play piano at a whore house."
Sentonal Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Wags94 Please also you should make sure that your Gateway Motherboard MAY not have a standard ATX power plug. A great number of people have thought the ATX plug was "Just A Standard" only to find out that the replacement powersupply just blew up their Dell/Gateway etc. http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/300-watt-power-supply-bestec-atx-300-12eb3.php Does state that their powersupply will replace your Gateway model, and that the plug is ATX 2.03 compatable. But you will want to check the diagram if provided with your current powersupply, if not, the same site lists a 630 W design that lists your PC as compatable for under $50 http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/630-watt-power-supply.php I'd give them a call before you make a decision. If you ask "If I buy this one, will I be able to use it when I build a New PC?" And they answer "Yes" then it looks like the Gateway is a standard (normal) design. Good Luck!!!! AMD Phenom 9950 @2.6GHz, HSI 4870 512M, 4GB DDR2 @533MHz, Raid 1 array (250GB), Vista x64, TrackIR 4, Saitek - EVO Force, X52, Rudder Pedals, Flight Yoke, and a FPS type game pad somewhere...

CE_Mikemonster Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Yeah, the rest of the miltary services kind of get on the pilots...until they need that airstrike, then the pilot instantly becomes God. :D I noticed the Airborne theme in a couple of you fellas' names. I started Basic with the Parachute Regiment last year and the Cpls were not too impressed with the release of a book called 'Apache!' over here in the UK. Sore spot being that the pilots are indeed 'In the s**t,' but most of our Toms on the ground don't have the reassurance of sitting in a titanium bathtub whilst under fire! (DAOR'd from Basic btw, military life not for me. My full respect to the few who make it. I do feel though that people shouldn't adopt insignias as sigs unless affiliated with the unit. The men really do earn the right to wear their badges.) As for the comp... lol, what mobo do you have? If it's a decent quality you'll only really have the PSU, CPU, GPU and RAM to upgrade (one at a time and in priority/price). It won't be a problem if you keep your eye open for eBay specials! We'll help! Too many cowboys. Not enough indians. GO APE SH*T
