Nealius Posted August 21, 2022 Posted August 21, 2022 Other than battle damage and overstressing the jet, the latter of which often requires something like 10G+, what are some other causes of bending the avionics? I ask because I manged to do it by pulling 4.1G, max 5.4G in the whole 15-minute flight. Launch off the carrier, CASE I departure, some cloud surfing where I pulled 5.4G according to the gauge, no problems. Pull up, roll inverted, pull 4.1G (per Tacview), and at some point during that pull my HUD got cocked about 30 degrees, VSI got flipped upside down, and the HSI froze. No warning lights except for VOICE. The only thing I can think of is I fogot to turn off Roll SAS, but what else could have bent my avionics with such mild aerobatics?
Golo Posted August 21, 2022 Posted August 21, 2022 One other thing I can think of is that there is a very small chance that cat shot can mess up IMU. Cant recall that ever happening to me, but maybe you were (un)lucky in that regard.
lbellouny Posted August 21, 2022 Posted August 21, 2022 In my experience, hard negative Gs impact the INS more than positive Gs. I suspect you bent the INS with your negative pull [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Retired CO of the vCSG-3's VF-103 Jolly Rogers
grant977 Posted August 21, 2022 Posted August 21, 2022 (edited) Random failures on per chance? He is also right above I’ll have the cat shot knock up the imu occasionally. Edited August 21, 2022 by grant977

Accelerometer was around +0.2G on the low end, +5.4G on the high end. No negative G the entire flight. 1 hour ago, grant977 said: Random failures on per chance? Failures off unless there's a gremlin in the latest patches. The cat shot theory sounds plausible. The other day I had GLOC on a cat shot completely out of the blue. Never had that before.
Callsign JoNay Posted August 21, 2022 Posted August 21, 2022 The Gloc thing on cat shots has been around for like a year, it's not new. I still don't know what causes it or how to reproduce. It happens a lot to me but it's never bent my INS. I have no idea what could've bent yours if you followed startup procedures and didn't over G.
Despayre Posted August 21, 2022 Posted August 21, 2022 What is the GLOC thing? I'm not updating this anymore. It's safe to assume I have all the stuff, and the stuff for the stuff too.

Golo Posted August 22, 2022 Posted August 22, 2022 I would characterize it as a head rush. I had it happen too few times, totally random it seems, and it has nothing to do with IMU breaking as far as I can tell, mine was OK after.
Nealius Posted August 22, 2022 Author Posted August 22, 2022 Could it be a combination of GLOC on cat shot + medium G manuvers? My IMU was fine for about 10 minutes after the cat shot, then suddenly broke during that +4G pull.
Callsign JoNay Posted August 22, 2022 Posted August 22, 2022 I doubt it. The GLOC thing has been happening to me for over a year. I've had many dozens of flights that began with it and never developed into a bent IMU.
