Hi guys. A newbie here.
I have watched a couple of tutorials on Youtube about ground attack with F/A-18C and been trying to apply the instructions but the Maverick I have picked doesn't seem to want to fire even though I seem to have a lock on the target on the ground. I'm using AN/ASQ-228 ATFLIR and AGM-65E - Maverick E (Laser ASM - Lg Whd). I have the FLIR screen on the right DDI, sensor control switch right, locate the target and lock it then switch to the left DDI where I have the Mavericks which are on STBY. Arm switch is on and I'm on A/G mode, click the top left corner (MAV), sensor control switch left, uncage and wait until I'm in range. Even though I get very close to the target, MAV is still crossed out and I'm not able to launch it. Also, 1111 code appears on the left DDI. Any idea why?

I have attached my track file and a screenshot of the cockpit when closing in on:

Hi,

Not looked at the track yet, but check your laser codes,

the maverick is looking for 1111 your tgp is not set to the same code

use the UFC option on the maverick to change the code it is searching for, it needs to be the same as your tgp or the JTAC's laser if you are using one.

I updated the code on the FLIR screen by hitting UFC to 1111 but it didn't make any difference.

your maverick code needs to match the same code as the laser that is being lased.

Your Laser maverick will not show ready to fire until it has aquired the laser.

1111 is not a valid laser code. There is a specificly requirement for value range for all four digits. Someone correts me if wrong, but for any laser code:

1st digit must be 1

2nd digit must be 5, 6 or 7

3rd and 4th digit must be anything from 1 to 8 (not sure about 0 as option...).

So if you are alone not interfering with anyone else's code, you can simply pick the defult 1688 setting of the TGP laser designator, and set that code on the laser guided munition.

If you are flying with others equipped with TGP, and don't want your bomb getting confused by another spot with the same laser code, then first agree on individual laser codes, set those different ones for each TGP, and then everyone sets his own TGP code for each of his own laser weapons on the specific weapon.

Btw, did you try looking up in the manual, maybe with the search function?...

Your laser isn't firing (no LTD/R cue) and it's not even armed (no L ARM cue). Check the laser arm switch, next to the FLIR power switch. You can only arm the laser in the A/G mode and it'll be automatically disarmed after each use, so you need to flick the switch to Arm again.

As others said, check that the laser code on the missile and the designation code on the FLIR as the same. Easiest thing is to leave the pod at 1688 and input that code on the missile.

To add for the next step... Once you arm your laser, and you set the codes to match, you will once more see this same exact thing, and at that time, that will be normal. You will at that point need to do one of the two things:

  1. Manually trigger the laser (on FLIR, select TRIGGER; then use gun trigger on the stick)
  2. Press and hold the weapon release button for a few seconds. That will fire the missile and laser.
