Extending and retracting has been animated, but I can’t even fathom the work required to animate the actual crash/recovery sequence.

Exactly how you’d create a smooth, natural looking animation, with an infinite amount of different aircraft flight/approach path possibilities is beyond me.

I have no doubt this is a significantly more challenging feature to implement than most people realise.

It's not that complex. You render all cables separately with collision, extension and braking (similar to trapping) and that's it. After the (unrealistic) 3 minutes of repair you're probably good to go. Granted, don't expect it to look very real, just believable.
