CAVET - It seems that some are not able to replicate this, so beware, investigations are continuing

I am normally a proponent of using the latest driver version.... however, the results speak for themselves:

Driver Version  FPS appCPU renderCPU appGPU
457.30 69.43 8.31 6.71 12.86
512.95 73.79 9.39 6.90 11.89
526.86 67.82 7.87 6.60 12.78

all the tests were conducted with the same settings, and in OpenXR, using a track and stabilised HMD position to minimise any changes on head movement.

The driver can be found here: GeForce Game Ready Driver | 512.95 | Windows 11 | NVIDIA.

when i got the rtx 4090 it would not be recognised at all by the Varjo headset until I installed the new nvidia driver for it.

To be fair, at the moment DCS running really smooth with the 4090 at max settings so not a bother 😁

As an alternative quick and dirty test, I've just run both 512.95 and 526.98 back to back in both 2D and VR; I didn't reset any profiles. KA50 instant acces Haifa to Megiddo tour (ramp hot start on Syria), no touching controls, look forwards, then left, then right; granted certainly not a sample that incorporates a large range of different graphical variations.

In 2D it pegged at 180fps (5.5ms frametime) and in VR it pegged at 14.1ms (71fps), the same result with both drivers to within 0.1ms appGPU.

I've been alittle confused about updating my gpu drivers lately mostly because I think they are for the newer cards/ 4000 series. When I update a gpu driver I write the driver number down and circle it being good sometimes with a star beside it. I'm not a defined tuner like most in here and only go by smoothness more then the numbers. I looked at my sheet of driver numbers and I had a bold circle with a star on that 512.95 driver. I also heard the 457.30 is a great fall back driver.

I shall have a test later on tonight in general flight and see if there is any improvement with the older driver, a 1ms jump should be pretty easy to spot.

I just re-ran the same test for the 512.95 driver

Driver Version  FPS appCPU  renderCPU appGPU
512.95 Re test  75.70 9.22 6.76 11.68

so pretty close to what i had before.

Here is the track i used for testing

performance track 2.8.0.trk

Have recorded a track from the Syria A10C free flight and run through both drivers: -

526.98

Average appCPU 6.64ms

Average appGPU 11.21ms

512.95

Average appCPU 7.16ms

Average appGPU 11.41ms

Both with head held still staring through the hud, the track was recorded on the 526.98 driver, not sure if that could contribute to the different appCPU numbers?  The track comprised of around 2700 data points and included low level city flying, rolling hills, trees and some light clouds.

edit: I am seeing the same reduction in appCPU with the newer driver, I don't see any appGPU change though.  Could it be linked to settings? Did you have any terrain shadows on for your tests?  I didn't.

I recorded on 526.98 as well, and terrain shadows was off on all three runs.

I have been playing with some settings lately in nvidia profile inspector, I will upload the profile for dcs and general, I’m case it’s that, but i honestly don’t think it is.

very odd! Did you do a DDU between driver versions?

No I didn't, that could be linked to it, is it possible to save the profile out and re-import it to save having to set it all again?

Yes, with nvidia profile inspector, you need to explicitly save the default profile and then save your modified profiles

https://github.com/Orbmu2k/nvidiaProfileInspector/releases/tag/2.4.0.2

is the version I am using.

My process is

1) Boot to safe mode, DDU the current driver, Reboot

2) Install the driver, use nvidia profile inspector to import the profiles, to the global and DCS profile, reboot

3) run the track from the stabilised HMD via the 2d mirror, recording the stats to file via OpenXR Toolkit's companion app

4) rinse and repeat

3090 🙂 my case has a problem with the 4090... unless i can get an FE or a water cooled SUPRIM, a 4090 wont fit in my case with my current water cooler... I could change the case but then it would definitely sit way above the management approval notice 😉
