Do I need to keep BS2 now that I have BS3?

I was under the impression my BS2 would be 'converted' to BS3 upon purchase of BS3. Now that I have "Ka-50 III" added and still have "Ka-50 Sim", is there any point in keeping the latter and would it be safe to uninstall BS2? I suppose some are keeping BS2 for campaigns that still use it.

Campaigns and multiplayer are probably the main reasons you'd want to keep it even if you could uninstall.

Which I'm not sure you can, the BS3 installation folder is smaller than the BS2 one, they might be sharing stuff.

Yeah I guess they might share stuff. I also noticed the Laser warning reset binding is also in the BS3 controls section even though it’s been replaced by the ODS.

23 DEC 2022 EDIT:

Due to corrections brought up by others, my answer is now "No", unless you want to play old BS2 campaigns and missions without converting them.
My reasoning for flying the older Ka-50 still stands (see older post in the spoiler below), but you can now fly a polished "BS2" Ka-50 by selecting "Version 2011" in the mission editor.

Spoiler

Yes, for 2 reasons:

1. Most importantly, BS2 has a decade of content supporting it (missions and campaigns). Although its easy to edit single missions to make BS2 missions playable as a BS3, for campaigns it is a huge endeavor (not possible for us normies).

2. BS2 and BS3 are different enough airframes to make it worthwhile to play as either. BS2 is the most historically realistic aircraft, whereas the BS3 is more of a representation of what the Ka-50 should be today (had the Russian Federation not defunded the project after going bankrupt in the 90s). The Ka-50 NEVER had 6 pylons on its wings, never had Iglas (or any air-air missile), and I believe only one or two ever had the missile warning system installed. That said, if the Russians ever refunded the Ka-50, all of these features would almost certainly be included in the modern variant because they are all included on the Ka-52. So, if you're trying to LARP as a late 80s or 90s Ka-50, fly the BS2 module. If you want to play as an alternate reality Ka-50 where the Russians aren't bankrupt and aren't the bad guys (I'll stop with my fantasies here), fly the BS3.

For real, consider yourself lucky that you own both. I cannot believe that ED are not including BS2 with BS3, and have also disallowed purchases for BS2.

Well the BS3 can be set to the "Version 2011" configuration with the laser warning system, no ODS, so that's normal.

Are you saying that you can still fly as an older Ka-50 if you only own BS3? If so please share how.

In the mission editor, in the (…)box, you can select the special options. One of them allows you to fly the “old version” nicknamed 2011 version.

Good answer, thanks.
Yes, as in my OP, if you have BS2 and 'upgrade' to BS3, you'll still keep your BS2. The upgrade just adds a BS3 (Ka-50 III). You'll see both of them in the Special Options, Modules Installed, Mission Editor and Options/Controls.

Yes, I'm tracking your OP because I also upgraded my BS2 to BS3. What I'm saying is that if you didn't own BS2 before they released BS3, you're screwed out of all the campaigns that have been made in the past 10 years by the Black Shark community.

Yes, and the way to do it is how Tarres said. When the helicopter is placed in the mission editor, you can select the configuration in the right most tab (...). Selecting the 2011 version will remove the MWS and ODS, will put the laser warning system back, remove access to the extra pylons for the IGLAs, and probably some other things I'm missing. You still get the new INU modeling (for better or worse).

Not totally 100%, you _can_ edit the files to use the BS3 instead, but that is of course a massive hassle for someone who just wants to use it...

Updated: Just to sum up the answers from the various contributors (thanks!).
- Whether you own BS2 or not, you have the option to pick the BS3 2011 version in the ME "..." tab which is like a 'polished' BS2 with the LWS and no ODS.
- Keep your old BS2 if you want to fly old missions and campaigns developed over the years for BS2 unless you want to convert them.
- According to this, BS3 should work fine on its own if you uninstall your BS2.

Hey OP, I changed my answer to your question. I chimed in before having the whole story. If you disagree, then deselect me as the "answer". Sorry for jerking you around.
