Nightcargo Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Just wondering how the FSSB Cougar is handling with BS. I am considering either the FSSB or NXT mod for my Cougar. Any thoughts would be aqppreciated. Thanks! Asus Rampage II i7 920 @ 3.8 EVGA580GTX 6G Corsair WinVista64 Hog
mckee14 Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 a friend of mine is flying BS with the FFSB, and he thinks it's "ok" with it, read: he feels that you don't get any disantvatages by doing so. but, he claims that it is not worth only for blackshark. when flying only the shark, he would recomment to keep the vanilla cougar... Democracy is choice, not freedom...
Dudikoff Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Just wondering how the FSSB Cougar is handling with BS. I am considering either the FSSB or NXT mod for my Cougar. Any thoughts would be aqppreciated. Thanks! I'm also wondering the same thing since I have an unused Cougar somewhere (but from the newer batch with plastic buttons :( ) waiting for a mod. Honestly, I would rather go for the NXT mod (plus the hall sensors), but I read that the springs tend to break so the FSSB/FCC seem like a permament solution. Too bad Evenstrain mod is not available anymore. i386DX40@42 MHz w/i387 CP, 4 MB RAM (8*512 kB), Trident 8900C 1 MB w/16-bit RAMDAC ISA, Quantum 340 MB UDMA33, SB 16, DOS 6.22 w/QEMM + Win3.11CE, Quickshot 1btn 2axis, Numpad as hat. 2 FPH on a good day, 1 FPH avg. Guest Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I am using the Cougar with the FSSB mod, and it works fine with Black Shark. However, I have never tried Black Shark without the FSSB, so I have nothing to compare it against. I am happy to answer any specific questions though.
Woodstock Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 (edited) I am using my FSSB R1 modded Cougar for BS. I bought the mod almost 4 years ago mainly for LockOn formation aerobatic flying and wouldn't want to trade it for anything. Its precision and scalability to individual preferences are awesome and this translates to Black Shark as well. I haven't tried a force feedback stick with BS, so I can't comment on it staying in the trimmed position is realy so much better. With the FSSB, you have to release stick pressure immediately after trimming, as well as with all other non-FFB sticks, but it does that re-centering also faster and more precise than a moving stick. I found out that the axis profile I use for FC AFM Su-25s is perfect for BS as well, and I really enjoy flying the Ka-50 with my FSSB. kaiserb_uk Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I'm using an NXT modded Cougar - I've had two spring failures in four years. Given that IJ will send you spares for no more than the postage IIRC I wouldn't use that as a reason not to go for it. I can't speak for the FSSB as I've never used one, but the NXT is absolutely brilliant, so precise. And you don't need a right arm like Popeye!
Nightcargo Posted January 22, 2009 Author Posted January 22, 2009 Thanks for the replies! Anyone else? Asus Rampage II i7 920 @ 3.8 EVGA580GTX 6G Corsair WinVista64 Hog
RSWedge Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I have the NXT with Sensors and love it. I have been using it for 1.5 years now and have not had any issues with springs. I play IL2, DCS:BS, Lockon, and WoV on a consistant basis.
Evader Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I have the FSSB R2 and would not use anything else, although I have other cougars in stock and Uber-2 configuration. As DCS will be adding fixed wing AC in the future, I would get the FSSB...you will not be sorry! I have no problem using it for BS, not realistic as the stick does not move but you'll get over that quickly enough.
Deadman Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I have IJ's U2 mod with a 4 inch extension and have never had a spring fail the extension gives the cougar a great feal an more room to move https://forum.dcs.world/topic/133818-deadmans-cockpit-base-plans/#comment-133824 CNCs and Laser engravers are great but they can't do squat with out a precise set of plans.

Flim Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 I really don't like the fssb for heli's, hard to trim and stay stable ! I will use a second cougar with urze extension for Black shark and the A-10. The fssb is perfect for the f-16 and would not trade for any other stick( Falcon4 wise).
Coffin Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Same here. FSSB great for Falcon but Black Shark (and Lockon) there is so much unstability the tactile feedback of a moving stick is probably a lot better. That way you at least know your input should be okay..than let the aircraft do it's thing. With FSSB there is more tendency to fight it resulting in PIO (Pilot induced oscillation :-). Slightly off-topic: when I was in school for civil flying I heard about aircraft being mathematically systems of the 8th order or something. Put in a elevator-input, keep it steady, the pitch will have some oscillation, dampened though. Contrary to theory, during flight (again civil -small props, aerobatics, small jet, large jet) I've never ever had that feeling whatsoever. Lockon and also Black Shark seem to have that math right there. I can't fly Lockon really due to that oscillation. And Black Shark in Realistic mode .. I can't hit anything with unguided stuff either...
PoleCat Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 I have the NXT, 2 original Uber mods and an FSSB. All are fine for Black Shark. NXT springs do not break often at all and you can easily be prepared by purchasing a couple of extra springs just in case. Out http://www.104thphoenix.com/
