I'm quite puzzled with the new MT feature of DCS. When running ST (with OpenXR) I get between 50 and 80 fps depending on the situation. MT however locks me at exactly 45 fps. I checked any potential frame limiting software on my PC including the NVIDIA drivers and of cause the Motion Reprojection features of OpenXR and the OpenXR toolkit which I set to DISABLED. I even uninstalled the OpenXR toolkit. No joy...

Any idea?

Is you headset refresh rate set to 90Hz?
If so, that defines the maximum. As longs as your displayed FPS is not lower, you can increase your graphics settings.

Yes, the headset is 90 Hz, HP Reverb G2.

I neither set a frame limiter nor have I enabled MR. It should run as fast as it can… which it does perfectly in non-MT DCS. Hence the confusion.

Tried a slow repair yesterday and then flew a few missions. HP Reverb G2, AMD 3700x, X570 Board and 32 Gigs 3200MHz RAM, GPU ASUS TUF RTX3080 12G.

Got around 60-70 Frames (depends on the Mission) tested with FW190A8 Persian Gulf Convoy Strafe but got several Times CPU or GPU Bound. No MR and Textures not on High because that's crashes some Modules like the AH-64 in VR.

FPS in Menu is 90Hz.

The highest Frame Rate i had was in the MP339 Weapon Practice over Caucasus. That was between 70 and almost 90 Hz. Also CPU and GPU bound several Times.

All in All it's a pleasant Thing in MR. A nice beginning. Could only get better (i hope so).

Im sure you have Reprojection = Always on. Menu has 90 FPS, without MR=on or with MR=automatic.

You can disable it in OpenXR Developer Tools or in 3D options in SteamVR (when you have googles on your head).

Expect some stuttering though, which doesn't look cool when traveling FPS.

This issue persists since DCS 2.8.2.35632 Open Beta - (25.01.2023). They changed something in the engine itself, it happens to OpenXR and Oculus Runtime.

You can test this out for yourself, switch back to DCS Stable 2.8.1.34667.2 - (27.12.2022) there is no artificial FPS cap.

I made a post about this a while ago, no reaction from ED so far. The FPS cap came also with strange GPU load (GPU less utilized since then).

I currently play with ASW on (45 fps), so it doesn't bother me that much anymore.

Even with MR I should get 90 fps in menus. But I checked all the switches and set them all to disabled... at least all I could find: OpenXR toolkit and OpenXR Developer Tools. With the exact same settings that lock me at 45 fps in MT I get 50-80 fps in ST DCS.

Next thing I'm gonna try is a clean driver installation which resets any existing settings... or I'll have to wait for the next patch.

hatte das gleiche Problem. Das Erhöhen der maxfps auf 500 in graphics.lua hat das Problem für mich behoben.

Shame on me... 🙈

After reinstalling and resetting my graphics driver without success I finally found the culprit:

The maxfps setting was configured in the autoexec.cfg file in my DCS user profile! I've configured this a long time ago and it never worked for me in VR. Only with MT this somehow came into play.

Could someone please tell me how to limit the max fps in the autoexec.cfg (for VR)?

Create a autoexec.cfg file with the first command like in the pic (you can set the fps number you wish)

tried, but does not seem to work.

my autoexec.cfg looks like:

no_device_hotplug = true
options.graphics.maxfps = 45

but the fps with my Reverb G2 are switching between "locked" 90 fps and 45.

I have MR -> off in SteamVR settings, V-sync in DCS is off, V-sync in nVida Settings -> "app..."

I use stable DCS 2.8.1.34667.2

It's not a big issue but sometimes there are small stutters when fps jump from 90 to 45 and I wondered whether I could avoid those by limiting fps at (max) 45.

You´re right, i´ve been out from DCS in last couple of weeks and i almost forgot... last time i fly in DCS MT i noticed that too that the frames are capped. And that´s why i have somewhat better performance in single thread than in MT (both in VR).

Sorry for didnt´t remember it before i posted.

EDIT: check if you don´t have the FPS capped also in Nvidia Control Panel, makes difference to me when in DCS single thread.

No worries. I've learned from your answers and that helped me to get better into this.

I will keep an eye on it till I'll find out what caps my frames at 90&45 fps.

In the meantime I push my settings to stay under 90 most of the time. DCS makes this an easy task in VR 😉

This might help you:

Adding maxfps to autoexec.cfg (like below) strangely dosen't do anything for me

options.graphics.maxfps = 45

Thanks. I was hoping to find a solution for a FPS limiter within "normal" DCS. But the mentioned methods from that thread are good enough till there is a way in DCS.

I am new to DCS and VR in general, and I have "enjoyed" messing around with this setup to try and find what works best for my rig. I have watched every video under the sun, throwing every setting possible and ending up in total frustration. I too was confused by the 45 FPS "cap". I am running the MT client primarily. This is my rig:

- HP Reverb G2 v2 headset
- Intel 11700K (yes I bought a Rocket Lake) overclocked to 4.8GHz all cores
- Gigabyte Gaming OC RTX 4080 overclocked about +160MHz core, +210MHz RAM
- 64GB DDR4 3200
- Orion 2 HOTAS setup (don't get me started)
- Using OpenXR Tools for Mixed Reality (OXRTMR, the MS Tool) and the OpenXR Toolkit (OXRTK, the in-game overlay)

This is what I have learned:

- I don't have an autoexec.cfg file anywhere
- I am "capped" at 45 ONLY when using motion projection
- Running "Custom Render Scale 85%" and motion reprojection OFF in OXRTMR with no anti-aliasing whatsoever, shadows medium, water medium, clouds high, PD 1.0 I can get consistent 80-90 FPS in the F-16 "free flight" instant action (MT client). The visuals are OK but I really like the razor-sharp cockpit over everything else, can't stand to struggle to see the MFD
- I tried the above in both the ST and MT client, and MT provides ~20 FPS improvement, so MT FTW
- Changing the above to 100%, visuals are better, frame rate drops into like the 70's
- Adding MSA2x to the above drops the frame rate a little more with a slight improvement to visuals, can start to notice a slight lack of smoothness
- Bumping to 120% render scale in OXRTMR with MSA2x further visuals improvement, but unacceptable FPS at this point

So, enabling motion reprojection in OXRTMR "use best frame rate", I started back through the same settings as above. It was always capped at 45FPS in-game with motion reprojection enabled. The motion was very smooth and looked even smoother than 85% with 80-90FPS that I first tested. My FPS didn't drop below 45FPS until I tried 120% with MSA 2x. Then, I started to dip into the 30's flying low through the mountains or over heavy sections of buildings.

So, my TLDR:

- Motion reprojection is a MUST IMO
- 120% render scale, with all antialiasing OFF yields consistent 45FPS with motion reprojection enabled, clear instrumentation, and App CPU, Rdr CPU, and GPU latencies of about 6/5-6/15-16ms respectively
- Clouds add more to the game than water IMO
- Flying over Beirut with a half dozen or so other planes on a custom mission, even with the above there are occasional drops into the 30's but I really don't notice it unless I see the FPS drop in the overlay, doesn't affect gameplay IMO and it's only for a few seconds
- WTH is with the rooftop shimmering in Syria? Nothing seems to get rid of it. Even running with no motion reprojection (which some suggested was the cause) didn't remove it. Other maps don't seem to have the issue
- I played with the upscaling options in OXRTK and the visuals just didn't seem great IMO

So, for me - I just keep my settings simple. It's easy to create a mess between the game settings, nvidia CP, and the two open XR tools. I am not using any options in the OXRTK aside from the overlay right now, and I will turn that off when I actually play.
