Just like old airplanes end up in museums, so do all-up professional sims. There's a chance your software will be preserved someday, too, running on a simpit exhibited next to the real thing and accessible to anyone who books a ride. If nothing else, it's a the only way to fly a plane that has no more flyable examples left anywhere in the world (that said, most of those date from before there were decent simulators). Besides, is there even a "professional side" to the F-14 module? The Eurofighter I could see, but the Tomcat's been gone for nearly two decades by now, and somehow, I don't think you have dealings with IRIAF (or that they're sufficiently clued-in to invest in professional flight sims). In fact, most of HB's lineup is historic or soon to be, only the Eurofighter is really modern. Edited August 4, 2023 by Dragon1-1 1

But it is being used in some museums or exhibitions to offer an experience to visitors, which is great. And indeed, at some point we may get the professional sims, but not by intention ofc, or when used in active service, and depending on what part would remain classified for how long. But also, apart from the aha effect and the fun of experiencing a professional sim, some you couldnt fit in your home, and if you could they may not provide the same, well, entertainment. It's something they don't need to care about as much as we do, though also in education we think more modern, and fun during learning yields better results. 4 Heatblur Simulations Please feel free to contact me anytime, either via PM here, on the forums, or via email through the contact form on our homepage. http://www.heatblur.com/ https://www.facebook.com/heatblur/

Don't take the following as gospel, I could well be wrong... That looks very like a military simulator cockpit which was decommisioned, surplused and mounted on a motion platform. As far as I know there weren't any full motion F-4 simulators in use by the RAF. The flight model it uses will be almost certainly something coded for one of the modern civilian sims. The RAF bolted to the floor simulators ran their flight models using bad tempered analogue computers and literally miles of wiring. I've seen one that was removed from RAF Coningsby and it looked like an explosion in a cable factory. The out of the cockpit view on the RAF sim was provided by a small camera on a gantry that 'flew' over model terrain in a massive room. I think the very first simulators they had lacked any visual system at all. The simulators did have a combat aspect in that it was possible to perform intercepts with them, but I don't know how that worked in detail. It does look like a fun day out anyway 1 --------------------------------------------------------- PC specs:- Intel 386DX, 2mb memory, onboard graphics, 14" 640x480 monitor Modules owned:- Bachem Natter, Cessna 150, Project Pluto, Sopwith Snipe

You know I'd pay good money to take a ride on that. I'd love if a museum managed to recreate one of those setups, I'd imagine RAF itself dismantled those models by now, but thankfully the art of making suitable models isn't lost as there's at least one model railroad enthusiast alive. The point is, military sims can come to us eventually. The UK got rid of the Phantom in the 90s, back when tech was much less advanced than it is now, and the sim was probably made even earlier, so it aged accordingly. It's still a pro-level sim hardware, just... from the 80s. Those analog mainframes can probably be emulated on any decent modern smartphone, although there are a few museums where they restore and run old computers, too. Those early analog simulators are, themselves, fascinating pieces of history at this point (plus, how many flight sims have a secret "invasion of 50ft spiders" mode these days? ). I imagine that as modern airframes are retired, which is bound to happen eventually (metal fatigue if nothing else), we'll see more sophisticated sims make their way into civilian market, including those built from the outset as motion platforms. Museums and companies like this one will be more than happy to offer rides on then-historic aircraft.
Bosun Posted August 4, 2023 Posted August 4, 2023 All it would take is some mapping software. VR Tech could be used with green screen masking. Just green-screen the entire glass of the cockpit model, and then have the VR headset 'pass through' anything that isn't greened. You could see the real model and cockpit (and yourself), but the glass would be replaced with the virtual projection. I'm honestly surprised this hasn't been done already. 1

Slant Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 (edited) @Victory205 Thank you for that video. Nothing as infectious as children laughing and having fun! @IronMike You're doing good, Jester's fine. A lot of man hours went into recording him and I think Graywolf did a good job at voice acting. Sometimes Jester is a little too motivated (Dude, we're still 50 ft above ground, stop talking about your wife, dang! And I know the basket is a little bit to the right. I can see that, what do you think I'm looking at! :P) but it could be so so much worse. Been playing since release, still not getting boring. And honestly, having a two ship with a full crew, that's a level of multiplayer that other people just won't get. Strike Eagle will have the same awesome experience, it's a special breed that sits in the back and directs the action like a quarterback with the baddest, meanest assortment of weaponry available. tacts.zeagle Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 I love the banter. It makes Jester seem real. Of course you can always turn off the intercom and let the backseater talk to himself...which may or may not have been done in RL. Not that anyone could prove anyway. 2

Has been done Usually followed by balled up bits of paper being fired from the backseat to the front, knowing that it will be the pilot who faces the wrath of ground crew who have to clean out said cockpit afterwards. Apparently. So I’ve heard. I was especially offended this morning when, after about an hour of close formation with an F-14 (after IronMike's denial I now know that was il-intent with which Jester was watching me) that never bothers to tell me when, or in which direction, the next turn will be, I hit pause to get something to drink and rest my eyes. And take a screen shot. Very hard core. I'm sure real pilots pause all the time; that's how they pull six hour hops and still manage to hit the boat at night. 2

It's always nice to be able to talk about things that interest you with people who share that interest. And who knows, maybe the Mk 47 motor will impart an extra furlong per fortnight at burnout! For the record, there's an F-14 in front of me in a different window. Paused. Eye stretching exercises. Very serious business. Keeping an eye on Jester! 1
