Just bumping the thread. I really want to buy DCS Black Shark, but I don't want to make the mistake of buying it with the crappy DRM in place if it's going to be out on Steam soon.

Posted

A steam version would be great, I really dont buy anything that is not on there. Black Shark would get more exposure and more $$$ coming in if it was on steam.

That would be really great indeed.

Especially considering the ability to buy addons and modules via STEAM, like it is planned for Rise of Flight!

I already bought the game but if there is a steam version ever i will bought it again or it will be better if we can use our product key and activate the Steam version also.

For those confused, Steam doesen't mean that there is no need to put a DRM in the program. In fact many Steam games come with it's own DRM, because Steam it's only a shop, if you don't put a DRM still ppl can copy the game folder and execute it without Steam in many cases.

Indeed. But a Steam version could remove the "Activation/Deactivation/Reactivation" stuff altogether, as the program itself is a copy protection itself(only one instance of account can be online and playing). Though, ED can still opt to including Starforce.

More than probably you can use the activation/deactivation schema in Steam too. Or use dvd checks, etc. This is a layer on top of Steam. And no, no only one instance can be ran though steam. There are many games bought in Steam that can run without Steam.

It would be cool through steam mainly as an outlet for a huge audience :)

Yeah, I've had some rough experiences with Steam, but overall the technology is pretty good and mature, and I think it's a good compromise between the publisher/developer's need to have protection and the consumers wishes.

I have no clue what kind of percentage Valve takes though or how big of a job it would be to adjust things like patch deployment routines and so on, but if those would turn out to not be a hindrance I would love to see BS on Steam.

I can see it: "Eagle Dynamics MEGAPACK!" etcetera etcetera. :P

Yeah there will be some hurdles but steam is so handy with automatic patches, I remember the days of having to hunt down patches so I could play on servers but now steam does the patching of all my games and most of the time I dont even notice it. I think Valve have said there are around 20 million steam accounts, the more exposure of BS the better.

Running the STEAM program in the background constantly having to read and write game data via your Internet Connection, on an already FPS intensive CFS...

No Thanks...

I can see my FPS taking an even bigger dive?

Posted

You don't need to worry about your FPS taking a dive, Kilo. Steam runs just fine in the background while playing very demanding games (e.g., Crysis, Supreme Commander, etc.). It would be just fine with DCS Black Shark. But I'm still hoping for something official in this thread as to whether a Steam version is coming.... Devs? Moderators? Anyone else in the know?

Steams processing power and ram consumption is more along the lines of having an instant messaging service or a VOIP app running. Multi-threaded computers will see an even smaller impact.

It seams that the many nay-sayers out there forget one important fact in their argument against steam. Regardless of the specific requirements needed to play the game on steam (broadband, always connected, need to login) that still doesn't leave out the SEVERAL other ways to play Black Shark. People who would buy Black Shark on Steam are those who already like the service and are part of it.

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.

The sims section on steam needs something better than IL-2 1946.

BTW I have bought stuff on Steam on sales offers that I would not have bought otherwise. For example the Orange Box for £5.66 doesn't need to do too much to prove value for money for me.

Blackshark needs to have Steam as an outlet.

Before Black Shark, what sim was better than IL-2?

I have never noticed Steam affect performance, unless their servers are down so I can't play a game at all. :music_whistling: That hardly ever happens anymore though. That was mainly an issue when the service first launched.

If I had my way, I'd buy every game on Steam at this point. I leave it running all the time in the background, and launch non-Steam games from it as well, so my Steam friends can chat with me and I have the option of the chat overlay. Not that I always have the time or inclination to chat, but the option to do so is nice.

That said, I don't think it's critical for Black Shark to be on Steam. The digital download straight from ED was a perfectly smooth process. And now the DVD is out for people who insist on having more physical discs to keep track of.

Well I hope you guys get the release in the method of your choice through Steam. I for one do not care for it but as Grimes rightly points out I can get it other ways through DL and on DVD as can others who are not interested in a Steam release. So far the numbers of people asking for it on Steam seem to be relatively small. Maybe if more people who want a Steam release would post here it might have a larger impact in bringing you what you are asking for. Can't hurt.

Best of luck!

While it is possible we may release Black Shark over Steam at a later point; it is currently not in our immediate plans.

Thanks,

Matt

Thanks for the reply, I hope you do decide to sell through Steam at some point (hopefully soonish). I have been following BS for some time now and although my PC is too crap to run it that will change soon. I know some people on this forum dislike Steam but I can see very few disadvantages by putting it on there.

Posted

Well, the disadvantage would be the extra work in preparing it for release through steam, and (potentially) extra work in patch deployments. There might be more problems inherent in Steam but I wouldn't know.

I do use Steam for some games and what I think would be the best use in having BS on Steam really is the added exposure. There are a good few independent games (like Culpa Innata) that I would never have heard of hadn't they been on Steam. But I have faith that ED and crew are on top of making the judgement calls associated with choosing avenues for the game's sales.
