Well, if 2FA fixed the problem... why not?

btw, I miss the Lockon era 'starforce' and the drama, lol.   Now google is my almighty starforce.

No, I was thinking if that is the case, then one possibility would be to allow testing for free if you already bought something from ED.

If you search the forum, this topic has been discussed extensively already.  But even if someone has bought ONE module from ED, what's to stop them from abusing the free trials for all the other modules if they allowed this?  Having to jump through a few hoops is not unreasonable considering they give you FULL access (not limited in any way like a lot of games do) to the module for 2 weeks every 6 months.  IMHO that's pretty generous.  The alternative is they take away the trials altogether.

What do you mean by "abusing"? It was ED who introduced the 2 week free trials, now if someone actually tries every module you call this abusing? But if the trials didnt help to gain more profit for ED , then of course they should call that a failed experiment and remove those.

No, some users were abusing the system, meaning they used the trials without time restrictions.

What Draconus said.  If they properly use the trials for each module for only 2 weeks every 6 months that's not abuse.  Problem is that people were "gaming the system" to use the same module continuously (i.e. way more than 2 weeks) for free.  I assume they were creating multiple accounts, but I have no idea.  However it was being done ED decided 2FA was the best way to prevent this abuse but still allow trails.

This also follow a path of ED that just seems disrespectful for its customers and supporters.

What a strange way to view the trial system ... I don't like the 2FA system, but I actually dont mind the trials, as I purchase almost every module anyway.  🙂

Nothing wrong with getting globally 'googlelized' 😕

I avoid using my real phone number for 2FAs as it can lead to unwanted spam messages or even potential security risks if the company's database is compromised. Instead, I use temporary phone numbers from AnonymSMS. My real contact information remains safeguarded this way. The service is free, and their numbers are based on real numbers.

It happened again. I can't login to my profile to disable 2 stage because it asks me for a Verification code and I don't have one.

I don't know why I am not getting a verficiation code. shouldnt it be sent to my email?

P.S. I eventually found a solution but I a'm not pleased how it went

Sorry to hear that.

But as discussed in this thread you do not need to use google, you can use off line authentication also

2FA is required for our free trials, we understand for some it is an inconvenience however due to abuse of our system by some people we have had to add the verification process.

thank you

Where is this explained? I typed in the code from a screenshot and in winauth and it still doesn't work. How should a normal user be able to establish where the problem is?

@Burning Bridges You're supposed to use an app to generate a single use code. ED suggests Google Authenticator but there are other options.

At the end of the day it works just like those hardware tokens with small LCD display, I'm not sure why people are so mad about it6cd29b86-7b1a-40ae-ad5c-0e5951d771db_2880x1370.webp

I know but it didn't work because I did not have the QR Code.

But fortunately I found my installation of Winauth with a correct code, otherwise I would be locked out.

I'm sure everyone except me has one of those at hand all the time.

Not what he wrote. That dongle just works as your favourite code generator. As a backup, log into your account, and then save the backup code sheet it asked if you wanted to save when you enabled 2FA. Those one time codes work whenever you have issues.

How do i get the authenticator code when i don't have one at all in the app...  the only thing in there is "add qr code' or key/  But i can't figure out how to get the key or qr code.  I'm just trying to login to my account.

The QR code was displayed on your computer when you enabled 2FA. You also had the option to save the onetime keycodes as backup, in case something went wrong.

OMG! This forum is full of your questions when you clearly haven't read that manual.
When you enable 2FA, a BIG QR code will be displayed on the ED website, and they ask you if you want to save your backup codes. Did you? Guess not. Scan THAT QR code with whatever app you chose on your phone. (I personally prefer Microsoft's and not the Google one).
Cheers!

I cannot get inti my account becouse it is asking me for two factor code. So I cannot set it. This is why I hate what ED has done, and why I think that info here is B.S.

You can hate all you want, but you didn't follow the instructions simple as that. Luckily, this is easily solved. Contact support, and they will remove the 2FA, and you can try again. I use 2FA on a plethora of sites, and never have any issues. And I always save the backup codes.
Cheers!

This is gross. I just transitioned from steam to standalone so I could use free trials, but now find out that I can't due to the insistance on dual factor authentification, a feature that actually decreases security.

Now I have to <profanity> around trying to find a workaround so I don't have to download another pointless fucking app on my phone.

Why is every pointless website obsessed with this crap these days?

At the very least couldn't you just email me a code? that's what most other places that force two-factor do

Adding dual-factor authentication (DFA) to free trials is a solid move. It adds a layer of security, which is especially important when people test out a service. But I can see how it might be a bit of a hassle for users who want to try something quickly without too many steps. If you’re concerned about giving out your actual phone number, you could always use a free temporary phone number for verification. That way, you get the added security without worrying about your info being tied to a service you might not stick with long-term. It’s a small step but can give you peace of mind.
