VR performance in the OH-85D is unacceptable.

I have pretty much every module in DCS and play all in VR with almost always 72 FPS in both SP and MP.

As soon as the rotor starts spinning FPS goes from a stable 72 to 62-60 with very high frametimes (Please see attached CapeframeX with both frametime and FPS

Explanation of capeframeX:

  • I am looking straight forward during the full 3 min
  • Empty mission on Syria.(no other assets)
  • Using autostart
  • first stage in framtime is cold and dark. Second stage is when I press autostart. Third stage is when the rotor starts spinning.

Worth noting:

  1.  If I center my view in VR with my head outside of the aircraft I have a stable 72 fps.
  2. MMS is not on.

I have also attached my track file + my options.

Hardware:

  • Quest 3
  • AMD 6800XT
  • AMD 5800X3D
  • 32GB RAM
  • M.2 SSD

As you know I did some tests of my own.

First two images are frametimes and FPS during Kiowa autostart. You can clearly see where autostart is activated (15 s), and when the rotors start spinning (75 s).

Last two images compare Kiowa autostart with F18 autostart.

I have the same issue, and sadly the frametimes are so inconsistent that I can't use Kiowa right now.

Great response from Polychop - is this a case of module out - lets go silent as per Gazelle?

It's actually awful.. It's a shame because I really love the Kiowa. I have even sent them an email without answer.

Please @Polychop Simulations as stated above I am still willing to provide any necessary data.

This is being looked into. We have all your data, thanks. Not sure why no one replied sooner, we've just been busy doing the actual work, sorry for that.

We're pretty sure the main performance problem was caused by an overcomplex damage model, especially with the blades. Testing has shown improvements but it's difficult as performance is a very subjective issue between hardware and users. We're doing what we can and hopefully you'll see improvements in the next update.

interesting. I have a 13700k, 3080ti and a Valve index and I recently purchased the Kiowa and haven't noticed any performance issues in VR. I play at 90 fps and I am very sensitive to even a 5 fps drop. That being said, I think I've only flown it on Caucasus SP and the index is a lower resolution per eye than the quest 3. Glad this is getting attention though because any extra performance is good!

Depending on hardware and settings you might not notice anything during normal ga--- err simplay, but the framerate is definitely lower compared to other (recent) modules.

All good, just wanted to ensure the community got a response - on reflection was probably a bit harsh so apologies no offence meant.

Thank you for the answer. I look forward to hearing/seeing more about this topic. Let me know if I need to provide any more data etc.

If worth it, i experimented same fps drop (15/20)

with a Pimax Crystal running DFR and QuadView. No other module has this behaviour. Very frustating and discouraging. Hope you devs find and that/those issues. No need to say that i'll provide all data that you could need.

I haven't checked (I flew the Kiowa, but haven't done a scientific comparison). Apparently at least part of the problem was the excessively detailed damage model of the rotor blades, and that is supposed to be fixed with today's fix, as far as I understand.

Aha, thank you, sounds promising!

Apart from the Spitfire, the Kiowa is pretty much all I fly now, I love it!

Just to add to my previous comment: since then I flew some pre-made Apache missions with the Kiowa (took off first in Apache, flew around for a minute, back to ME to swap to Kiowa, did mission as Kiowa), and what I noticed was the frame rates in both Apache and Kiowa are roughly the same.
