Been doing some carrier launch for the first time with the F18, problem is, I don't trust the shooter, I find that he doesn't guide me well, maybe I don't know them well enough, I usually guide myself. Do you use the external view at the last part of getting ready for launch?

I'm loving it

No issues following the plane director and i never used F2 view to align in the catapult. I use visual references in the deck (besides the plane directors). But i fly in VR and that makes easier to align the airfirame to the catapult.

About carrier ops: "The younger pilots are still quite capable of holding their heads forward against the forces. The older ones have been doing this too long and know better; sore necks make for poor sleep.'

1. Shooter is not guiding you during taxi. It's plane director. Shooter... well... Shoots you the catapult.
2. You can trust plane directors, they're ok (if they work).

Newbie-Question: What do you do if you have rolled too far trying to align the catapult?

Good question, it as happened to me many times, I've seen videos where they actually push the plane in position

In DCS you do a 180 (with NWS on HI you can turn in a verrrrryyyyy tight radius) and go back down the deck and retry.  You can safely run over the deck crew without causing issues.

Thanks for the respond and thanks for the answer rob10.

That there is no collision detection with crew members destroys the immersion.

Too bad it's not implemented, that would be cool

As a newbie I have the impression the start procedure is not the same as shown in many documentaries about Nimitz-Class Carriers.

Wondering myself if somebody realized and posted in the wishlist or other subtree section of the >Home>English>Digital Combat Simulator>DCS: Tech & Terrain>DCS: Supercarrier ?

I'll look it up.

Concerning Marcs initial post: Was guided quite good until now, tried not to use F2 for immersion.

I never use F2 since using SC but you can't trust the crew fully yet. They can direct you into collisions with static objects. They will sometimes not align you well with the cat. You'll know it when the hold-back bar does not hold you. You can't reset the crew in this case - mission over. Other times you will be connected ok and they'll magically correct the wrong angle or placement.

Collisions are not planned for the crew. Maybe they'll try to avoid the aircraft in the future. It'd be way more game breaking when you'd have to end the mission due to the deck crew accident.

Yes, that's not the full procedure. It's simplified to reduce cost and dev time and to speed up a bit the game play.

That would be epic during recovery, when aircraft is in the groove and whole catapult crew decides to just walk to their positions.

I've never had a problem once getting hooked up, using a combination of the deck crew guiding me in and my own eyes.

Ya, it's pretty relaxed in terms of the position you need to be in and will move you over if needed.  I've rarely had an issue with not ending up in the right place and almost always it would be user error (inattention) and I can tell before I even try and get them to hook me.
