Hi everyone I am having some trouble in the growling sidewinder pvp server in my f18. Im pretty new but I know how to work all the systems and I get kills sometimes but not often. One of the main things that I want to learn is good launch parameters for AMRAAMs and also gaining SA and anticipating my opponents moves.

Thanks in advance

Mark

On GS's server, your Viper opponents will:

a.) Load up 6 AMRAAMS

b.) accelerate to Mach 1.5+

c.) climb to 40K+ ft

d.) kill you.

Do the same thing but before him

Or

Fly away until he runs out of fuel or something/someone else has his attention.

This are actually good parameters for the Hornet. Viper should be higher and faster.
P.S. It depends on temperature.

I had to google what your abbreviation means...

I mean that 1.5M and 40k feet are preferable parameters for the Hornet before the first engagement. Viper will be 1.7-1.8 45-50k, and Hornet will have an upper hand due to better radar, you can turn away at 70 degrees after launch, Viper only 60, it seems small difference but it is huge.

So lets say I'm at 40k ft Mach 1.5 and there is a f-16 at 45k mach 1.7. At what range should i shoot?

Also what do mean by temperature?

Thanks for helping

There is no one answer "what to do to win". BVR and BFM are complicated topics with dozens of variables, some say it's an art, not knowledge.

Learn what are cranking, notching, split-S etc. How the radar works, what it can do, and what can't.

Use youtube, there is a lot of good tutorials for BVR from youtubers like AIR WARFARE GROUP, SL4Y3Rv, The Ops Center By Mike Solyom etc.

GS is very dynamic, so try to make your fight 2v1 or 1v1 by cranking (hornet radar have 70 degrees horizontal gimbal, you can comfortably maintain 60 degree radar track). GS bandits will usually keep their nose on you, so you can kinda predictably drag them out of other enemies.

Almost everything will have a kinetic advantage to you, so don't support missile until active for the initial shot. After first shot trade, it's very important to spot the other guy first. Practice your radar mech, know which mode you should be in, practice using hotas, practice some of the "hornet tricks" like saving radar modes with different weapons, clear radar screen by switching to GUNS and switch back, SPOT mode on MSI tracks, etc.

Unlike any other aircraft (other than JF17), you can't outrun your opponent. Inside 10 miles with no friendly near by, you're better off trying to kill the pursuing bandit than turning cold. Don't be afraid to merge, but make sure you do your heater gameplan (idle/no AB when you don't have tally, pre-flare when you're spiked and no joy), and don't pull the paddle and lose all your energy.

Most importantly, carry at most 6 amraams, remove pylons that you don't need, unload to quickly accelerate, loft your missiles.

I have one more question if thats ok

Should I use STT or TWS to shoot AMRAAMs?

Thank you all for replying

You can shoot AMRAAMs using both radar modes. In STT, track should be more reliable and harder to drop. In TWS on the other hand by using L&S and DT2 or by just cycling through available tracks you can engage more than one target.
