jonfog Posted February 21 Posted February 21 So with 13 hours of estimated download time I just wonder if I can tell the updater to somehow just update the core files. Later I would like it to update just ModuleXX or TerrainXX. Since I have a second install on a laptop with just the basic files I can see that it's update is much smaller.

Have you tried using the module manager? You can disable/uninstall modules with it, controlling what gets uodated and what not.
Mr_sukebe Posted February 21 Posted February 21 Razo's idea about using the module manager would be a good workaround. Do bear in mind the implications that each update "might" include updates (even small ones) to a variety of terrains that could be technical dependencies for the core game, and delaying installation could result in synchronisation issues. To me, deliberately delaying elements of planned updates feels like a dangerous route to start taking. 2 7800x3d, 5080, 64GB, PCIE5 SSD - Oculus Pro - Moza (AB9), Virpil (Alpha, CM3, CM1 and CM2), WW (TOP and CP), TM (MFDs, Pendular Rudder), Tek Creations (F18 panel), Total Controls (Apache MFD), Jetseat
jonfog Posted February 22 Author Posted February 22 I guess the problem for me was the update of the Afghanistan map. It's pretty huge as far as I can tell. So it would be nice to be able to download the maps separately while not blocking the rest of DCS. I tried to disable it in the new start GUI thing but that didn't work.

I completely feel your pain (I was just shy of 24 hrs downloading the update), but as Mr_sukebe said, it would probably cause more issues than it would solve. You're assuming that nothing ever changes in the way the core and the maps interact with each other. It's very possible you might download the core then be back complaining that your DCS was broken because you had mismatched versions of core and map and that might not be obvious to troubleshoot ("I updated and it broke" -- assumption is going to be you updated everything (because that's what 97% of people would do, not just the core). So while in a perfect world we'd be able to split them, that's very likely never going to happen. 2
sleighzy Posted February 22 Posted February 22 If you haven't already then also add an exclusion in your anti-virus software, e.g. Windows Defender, to exclude the entire DCS installation folder. This can speed things up as won't be scanning everything downloaded and unpacked. 1 AMD 7800x3D, 4080Super, 64Gb DDR5 RAM, 4Tb NVMe M.2, Quest 2

Gman109 Posted February 25 Posted February 25 Hah, funny you said that, I almost grabbed a 4tb instead of the 2. I'm not complaining about the size of the program, I just wasn't sure if I had done something incorrect or hadn't cleaned up things properly. I just reinstalled DCS on my new system instead of migrating the old HD from my older system. Not sure if I "lost" install numbers, but honestly, even if I'm down to 8/10 left, I'll probably never run out in my lifetime. 1 Primary DCS System: AMD 9800x3d, MSI Tomahawk 870, 6TB m.2s (2x2t, 1x2tb), MSI Ventus 5080, Seasonic 1200 PSU, 64GB Gskill 6000mhz CL30. 32" Asus 4K OLED 240hz, 49"MSI OLDED Secondary System : 14600KF, z790 Tomahawk, 32GB Gskill 6000mhz CL32, Asus 4090, 2x2TB m.2. DCS is a glorious sim and it continues to get better. for the maps to look as they do, there obviously needs to have some textures to back up the great visuals. enter stage right come the maps. there was a time not too long ago where Syria was the hog. at 68 GB which is half of the 4 top sized maps. seems a joke now. me getting a 4 TB would have been necessary eventually because of other games i play. so i jumped. one noticeable benefit is the increased performance of a good nvme drive half full. I have 9TB total of SSD space now in my new PC, I just have one dedicated drive for DCS as it's the most important game/program for me. 4 m.2 slots, 1 TB C drive, one 4TB, and 2 2TB. I still probably should have bought another 4 for DCS as eventually it'll expand past the 2TB size, but at that point I'll just buy another 4TB and swap DCS onto it. For the first time in...forever, I'm finding that I can install various games that I regularly play at will, without having to husband my space.
