The other day was the first time I've been here in quite some time. When I signed in there was a message stating something about great to see me back and something about my account being re-activated or some such thing. Starting about ten minutes after signing in, the junk mail started. Since the other day I've received over 100 junk emails. On average I would normally get about 10 a week. So thanks for that DCS. Great way to welcome me back.

That doesn’t make any sense.

Why would you be the only one to receive Spam on a DCS related E-mail?

I feel unloved. I'm not sure I get any regular emails from ED - definitely not 10 a week.

Is it possible there's a DCS physhing website out there that you signed into and now they have your email? Additionally - I'd be concerned about your accounts integrity if that's the case - because this doesn't sound normal at all!

I would recommend emailing support immediately and advise what's going on. If they're legit emails and something is wrong their end, they should be able to fix it. If, alternatively you have signed into a physhing site instead - you'll want ED aware so that they can protect your account.

I haven’t received any emails from ED ever, apart from solicited ones of course.

If there is a phishing site, that impersonates ED/DCS, that should be forwarded to them……. if

Yep, I don't receive any spam from ED or ED related stuff. At all, and I used to have a hotmail account time ago which is horrible getting spam, but still not ED or DCS related.

Anyhow, try to change your emails here at the forums and ED account (they're 2 different ones) for a better and safer email provider of your liking, they're usually way better with the spam.

Please dm me with more info, not aware of any messages like that being sent.
We have the newsletter subscription, and sometimes the forum will send you a summary if you have subscribed, but that is it.

Please let me know what email domain it is coming from

It's definitely strange: I get e-mails about the weekly newsletter, and notifications if someone sent me a pm on the forum, but that's it...

Instead of spending time to vent your frustrations out in public (it appears you're the only one experiencing these issues), wouldn't you agree your time could have been spend more useful reaching out directly to ED?

(Sorry to vent my frustration now, but all these negative "I don't like DCS" and "that's it, I quit" kinda complain-posts aren't useful to anyone)

To clear up a couple of things.

The emails are not from DCS. They are the types of emails one gets from the email being sold to "marketing partners".

I've DM'ed BIGNEWY in hopes he can figure this out. Although that door can't be closed once it's been opened.

I logged directly into the DCS forum via the bookmark link that I've had on my computer for several years. the same one I used to return to this thread this evening.

My computer stays updated and automatically performs security scans weekly.

I logged in right after checking my email this evening, that had an additional 22 phishing/sales emails in the junk folder.

I am very frustrated by this as I'm sure any of you would be. Maybe someone can open a new DCS account using an alternative email. Not one that you currently use or you may become as frustrated as I am.

Thanks for the clarification. So what you’re saying is that Coincidently, 10 minutes after signing into DCS, you started to receive spam from other entities, and you are assuming that due to the coincidence ED has sold or passed on your email addresses to spammers.

I understand your assumption based on the coincidence, however I think that more than one factor needs to be examined to come to a conclusion.

In particular, is your email address used for anything else.

And another- is anyone else with a DCS account experiencing the same?

I, for one am not having issues with spam from the email account I use for DCS. I also have a unique method to my accounts that help me identify where spam is likely coming from.

Additionally, if your email is used for more than just DCS gives the possibility that your email was leaked elsewhere and this is a coincidence. It doesn’t make it so, but it makes it a possibility.

Now, what is the likelihood that ED chose to only leak your email?

While the timing is indeed coincidental, there’s more that doesn’t add up than does at the moment to give weight to this being DCS?

Are you able to confirm if it’s your forum account that you logged into, or your DCS account that got the “welcome back” message?

That's interesting. Is it anything that could be shared?

There are multiple ways of doing it, and I won’t go into detail here on exactly how I do it - but in short find a way to have a separate external email address for every single account that you have. That way if you start getting spammed on one account, you know exactly the entity that has either been hacked or is leaking/selling the information.

There are various methods to do this - which you could do a web search and find out. However, with mine because of my tech background with email Services I’ve gone to a more advanced method than the majority would be interested in or able to do. (Just because it involves configuring and running your own email service).

But I believe Services like proton mail might have the ability for you to have multiple aliases for the one email account which could do a similar thing.

The added benefits going this way is that your secure account like Bank and government, etc will be unique and different to each social media and general email Accounts so it’s harder for bad actors to actually know which email address you use for your bank account to try and take control.

Obviously, nothing is 100% secure, and this also requires a little more effort as you need to know what all your individual email aliases are for- but this does give more options and is also very good for tracking the true source of spam. (as well as dropping that email account once it has been compromised without losing access to all your other Services.).

Is it possible that this is coincidental? That can't be totally ruled out. The fact that this happened minutes after "reactivating" my DCS account (their word, not mine) lead my to believe that this was a cause and effect situation as opposed to coincidence. I guess the question is "Does DCS share information with marketing partners as a way to generate revenue?" If the answer is "Yes", then there is no need to look any further for the cause. The only information I could find regarding this is on the Legal page and states, "We respect your right to privacy and will only process personal data and other information you provide to us, or we collect about you, in accordance with applicable privacy and personal data protection laws." Which really doesn't say one way or the other.

I too am interested in learning your "unique method" of determining where spam is originating from.

EDIT: Separate Emails for all of your login sounds interesting. Although that would require about 300 (and counting) email addresses. Maybe you could use your method to create a new forum account to determine if new user info is shared.

Hi, I've double checked with the team, we do not share data or have any marketing partners that we share with. So we are very confused by what you have said. Please PM me with more detail.

Thank you

If it’s a forum account, I can’t create a new one because that would breach the rules for the forum account and risk me getting kicked off completely. If it was the DCS- I think multiple are ok as long as it’s not backing any other rules.

Re multiple email accounts- research email alias. There are methods to have different emails per service but still have a single email account they all go to. But yes, to the outside world I have many email accounts-although no one would know because each service only see’s one each.

by virtue of a catch-all email domain, which almost every (good) service offers. So basically, I have a random email domain like @blala.bla and I can make up any prefix to this I want on the fly. Like “RandomVendor@blabla.bla”… the catch-all will receive it.

If I start getting spam, I can see immediately who leaked my adress and disable it.

Very useful!
