Long shelf life is nothing that a non MMORPG can benefit of (in the eyes of the publisher). They are not after long term sales, they are after a quick return on their investment.

Well, especially with "open" (in the sense of extensions, MODs, etc) games this is not entirely true. The initial development of a solid engine is more expensive than adding new variations of vehicles and soldiers to the game.

A game like "Dragon Rising" could easily result in tons of AddOn/extensions. This starts from vehicles and infantery (i.e. playing as PLA) and ends on complete new terrain-types and islands.

With the current state of this game, I guess nobody will buy any Add-On for it.

This situation is really sad. It all reminds me very much of what happened with Far Cry 2: overambitous developers promising the fans more than they can deliver, then the final game turns out to be decent (albeit unnecessarily flawed) but people are so angry about the broken promises that the common reception turns generally negative and sequels become very unlikely. I like both games, because they are pretty much the only modern tactical shooters that gave me that (early) Delta Force-vibe again. Battlefield 2 is getting old, Crysis was too unoptimized and undecided between it's bad Hollywood-story and freeroaming. The later R6- and GRAW-iterations were not my cup of tea either, so there goes the genre down the drain. I blame stupid dev-decisions and overreacting fans (this is not Activision releasing MW2, alright) - or maybe it's just that my taste in tactical shooters is too special, I dunno. Maybe BF: Bad Company 2 turns out as a game I can like, we'll see.

Don't forget the mega flawed release of Americas Army 3 - game has not been fixed till today - community got bored waiting and just died out. Some are still playing the 2.8.x. Really sad that OFP:DR multiplayer died so quickly. I feel like a period of time of "multiplayer greatness of FPS games" has ended, depressing. What should I do? ARMA2? Community seems growing, I think? However it is not truly my type of game, it is outdoors only. Indoor CQC combat is akward :( Some can say MW2 - but MW2 is hmm Counter-Strikish...

Honestly, there was a game that was not realistic, but gave me over 1 year of fun - it was BF2142. It encouraged team-play a lot, creating squads and staying together. I liked its gameplay mechanics. Looking forward for something like that.

arma 2 is at a great standard. with the coming addon broken arrow ,it will include thermal sights. ofp2 is ok, but imo it was really aimed mainly for the console.

problem with aa2 is the heavy lag in games net code needs sorted.

ofp2 runs smoother in terms of multiplayer net code.

yes you are, but "mowing the fields" sounds more poetic, or better:

"mowing the bad crop from the fields"

It was announced today over at the flashpoint forums that no further DLC or patch work will be released for dragon rising. Four months after it's release!!! Leaving a huge hole in the community. Their focus is now on the future of modern war...I can't imagin anyone would buy a COde masters game after this lump of crap.

I've never seen this type of deception and poor handling of a game release by a major developer.

they got what they wanted.... money.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

They did...it's just sad because they had to "rob" for that money. Sold a product behind the promise of future support (4months doesn't is hardly support). Anyway it's more a principle thing for me and the fact the tactical shooter will never come to the console which I Jess isn't a bad thing given the direction of consoles.

the DR [it's not worthy to have the OfP name] topic on the BIS forums has been locked at 3,999 posts.... go figure.

You could say they done a 'snatch and grab' move on the game...

It wasn't that bad... it certainly wasn't that good, but it was a decent attempt at getting a somewhat tactical shooter onto the console.

The coop MP was fun, the rest of the MP was pants.

Code Masters certainly have done themselves no favours by abandoning the product a mere 4 months after release. Personally, i'll be reluctant to buy another of their products along the same vein as this title due to their lack of support... but then again, if they address issues and actually make the AI smart, then i'd have a look.

I'll leave the tactical military games to BIS and maybe company X. I will not be purchasing another CM game no matter what it appears/plays to be. I wish I could find the interview link with one of the developers dated August 13th 2009. Reading it was painful because there was SO SO SO SO SO much untrue information in there it was like watching a kid who was lying to get out of trouble.

The biggest part goes something like this "we want to give back to the community, they give us so much it's important we give back...we don't just want to take your money and be done with it."

They tried to fly too high and got burned in the process I guess.

Everyone and everything changes... they might release a title that blows your little socks off.

Just because this one sucked and they failed on the marketing and information aspects, doesn't mean they're incapable of learning.

... but, unlike this time, i'd wait until it was released for a while and thoroughly played and reviewed before i bought it.

Yeah that's a more logical attitude to have, unfortunately my spite is bigger than my logic ;).
