(FRAZER air display....)

all I can say is wow!

Some questions !

How on earth does the helicopter just pitch up nicely at the start and balance on rear wheels ?! - as soon as I take off helicopter instantly goes backwards and usually to the right or something :joystick: .....

How on earth do you get to instantly hover just off the ground and lift up wheels - I see there is no hover mode turned on?! - Ive instantly gone a little higher before I can trim! :joystick:

is this all trimmed ? or has the guy got a surgeon quality ultra steady hand !

All I can say is whenever I get frustrated I watch this video over again to see how it can be done!

Frazer : Any tips you can give regarding the control setup - trimming etc !

Im using a stock cougar at the moment - maybe not the best stick for precise helicopter flying ? but am thinking of getting the FSSB mod (once Ive robbed a bank!....) - also watching for the new Saitek and Thrustmaster HOTAS before I make a decision.... I just want the HOTAS that will let me (one day?!) fly like that.

Congratulations on an awesome video

If you pratice and it will come.

Read the Manuals and the forum posts. They give lots of good tips. Going backwards and sideways is standard on takeoff, you have to correct with the stick. Flights pretty hard, as Joey said, just keep practicing. Your lucky you've got a good stick, I fly by keyboard myself. Very basic manuevering. :p

Another point is that your choice of controller does have an impact here. For example, some of the cheaper sticks have very few "steps" on the throttle, which means it might be completely impossible to get the required amount of precision on the collective that you need to balance the aircraft like that.

So lots of training and good equipment is what you want. You'll never do without the training, so it's the important thing, but the equipment makes it easier.

thats the thing that im not too sure about.

the collective is currently set to the RNG knob on the throttle - do people really use the throttle as the collective ?!

I find the clicking of the cougar throttle drives me nuts !

Oh Hell Yeah!

Take the detent out of the Cougar Throttle - a quick 5min job and you're good to go.

is there some instruction somewhere Viper......

Best bet would have been Cougar World but they're down as you said. I just opened my Throttle and had a wee look around and butchered it myself one day....IIRC it was not too difficult.

That said - I am by No Means advocating that you do the same. If you're the least bit uncomfortable tinkering, then leave it until Frugals is back.

Nice - was just reading the email from Cubpilot today - not sure to look at that or FSSB mod ..... Uber worth the cash and time ?

Depends on what you fly. F-16 pilots benefit from the Force-Sensitive Mod as it equates to the Real F-16 Flightstick. For all other Planes you can see that it is obviously less than desirable and a Big No-No for Black Shark.

As regards to the UberII, well, that takes the Cougar to a whole new level. Cannot adequately explain the difference between Stock vs Modded - have to experience it. Not that there is anything wrong with stock, mind you. Definitely worth every penny I spent

I use the the throttle on the cougar for collective and antenna knob for throttle. I dont reverse the throttle axis like some do to simulate pulling on the collective. My experience is the clicking on throttle at the idle setting for most situations isnt near enough for lift during takeoff or flight so it doesnt bother me. At least on mine the if I keep my throttle at the first upper detent, I have almost the perfect hover lift without using auto hover with hands off stick. Anything forward of that I start to climb. So personnally like the clicking. It gives a lot of direction to avoid over torque, and climbing and hover.

I would have to add my vote for the Uber II Mod as well, though as has been mentioned for some reason Cougar World has been down for several days... not sure what is going on there.

I have the Cougar Hotas, along with the TM Elite Rudder Pedals.

I went all out - I did the gimbal mod for the stick with the Uber II NXT mod, along with the hall sensors it requires. This was back in 2005, and the stick is still as smooth as it was the day I installed it. Got rid of the slop, got rid of the transition flats, and I really like the soft feel toward center and then it gets progressively stiffer the as you move it to the extremes.

I also added the Hall Sensor kit for my throttle, and the Hall Sensor kit for my TM Elite Rudder Pedals.

I have been very pleased with my setup, and I am sure it helps me in flying the Black Shark smoothly as well.

See I really wanna get into the sim more... Im getting better but I want the best possible stick (dont we all!)

The cougar has a slight wobble which dont really affect me but I guess if the uber mod gets rid off all the better.....

stupid question if I may - but how do I map the throttle to the collective..... I change it via DCS?

If i click axis and collective .... and move the throttle it dont pick it up .... if I move the slider .... it registers.

Posted

Not sure I understand, why would you want to map the throttle to the collective? For the most part, at least for me, the throttle stays in pretty much one position after everything is running and ready to fly.

I have my throttle mapped to the rng knob on my Cougar throttle.

Sorry I meant map the collective to the cougar throttle! ... Up and down ;)

Throttle I just leave to auto.

But yeah I could map rng to control throttle.

Posted

Hmm you should be able to map it in DCS just fine.

Go to controls, click on axis commands, which will make it easier to find as it will only list the axis commands.

Click on the collective, then click the clear button.

Click on add, and it will bring up another window - move your throttle all the way up and down, and it should pick it up as " joy Z". Then click ok, and you should be good to go.

hmmmm tried that but it dont pick up the throttle as Z.....

when looking at the Cougar Viewer from the control panel should pushing the throttle forward and backwards move the Z range ...... if so when moving the throttle nothing happens.

Open Foxy's Joystick Analyzer ( under supporting applications ), moving the throttle up and down, you should see the Z axis move up and down ( 100% to 0%).

thanks.

just tried... seems the throttle aint working ..... stuck on 43%

looked at thrustmaster and theres a workround..... uninstall.... reflash ... calibrate etc... tried that .... not working .

Happy to wow you :)

Some questions !

How on earth does the helicopter just pitch up nicely at the start and balance on rear wheels ?! - as soon as I take off helicopter instantly goes backwards and usually to the right or something :joystick: .....

Increase the collective just a little bit and a gentle pull on the cyclic will pitch the nose up without getting airborne. Holding the wheelbrakes is required for not driving backwards too fast.

How on earth do you get to instantly hover just off the ground and lift up wheels - I see there is no hover mode turned on?! - Ive instantly gone a little higher before I can trim! :joystick:

I do not use hover mode. Important is to know at what attitude, or pitch angle in the hud, the Ka-50 will hover. I look at the ground while keeping the hud in view to correct any drifting.

is this all trimmed ?

I never use trim during aerobatic demo's. I know that real Ka-50 pilots, or pilots flying helicopters with a similar trimming system, do use trim during aerial demonstrations but I prefer to have full predictive responses from my inputs at any and every moment.

or has the guy got a surgeon quality ultra steady hand !

Although 5 years of flying

certainly increased the steadiness of my hands, I wouldn't call it "surgeon quality ultra steady". :D

More important is knowledge, or just understanding, of how aerodynamics on a helicopter work. How control inputs of a helicopter work and how they can work together. If you combine that with some flying experience you will be able to recognize deviations and drifts in your planned flightpath at an early state and correct immediately (anticipate).

All I can say is whenever I get frustrated I watch this video over again to see how it can be done!
Keep it fun and don't stress yourself, the overall experience doesn't come overnight!

Although good equipment is welcome, it will not make you a better pilot!

I find the clicking of the cougar throttle drives me nuts !

I use the throttle as collective with an inverted curve. This way it will work more like a real collective "pull to go up and drop to go down". :smilewink:

I found the clicking (detents) quite useful as it gives me extra indications on the throttle. The cougar detents are heavier then the X52Pro's though.

Congratulations on an awesome video
Thanks!!!

If you have any other questions, I'm always happy to answer them.

Happy flying :)

Cheer frazer! Good info.

Ill keep at it - seems there's a problem with my throttle - hopefully thrustmaster might be able to help.

In the meantime ill keep practicing.

One more then frazer if I may.

What damperss were switched on while doing the routine?

And the flight director switch?

Thanks.

One seriously wicked vid, that. Was interesting to see just how much rudder-input used, and some of the manouvers had me going "what the..." :D

Great stuff.

I used to like people, then people ruined that for me.
