I don't. There are mp3's floating about on the web with recordings of me on Ventrilo... >.<

Do you sing over Ventrilo? Is it a regular event? :D

If what he said about himself is true then at least the audience will not be regular :)

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

Sorry for OT but has anyone figured out how to mimic narrow-band military radio sound using TeamSpeak or Ventrilo? TS noise is NOT a solution.

Use proper mike... :) I still can buy here 3 pieces for $1...

Or make a DIY preamp-filter-clipper-filter for your standard electret mike.

Somebody uses software analogs but I do not exactly know if there are ready-to-use solutions to download.

If only Matlab code could run in realtime, i could fix you a script in 10min ;)

You don't advertise on lockon.ru if you want regular audience :D

But I wanted to hear other's like through narrow-band radio. Other's are less important here. Especially if it involves soldering to make someone else's gameplay more immerse :P

I had potentially simpler solution in mind - replacing/modding Ventrilo's codec

vent-server-manage-server-codec.jpg

This way it would work in both directions! Knowledge needed:

is narrow-band codec available in Ventrilo ?

is it possible to replace/ass external codecs to Ventrilo?

are there any narrow-band codecs available which could be tossed into Ventrilo?

You see, in areas I know very little of (like sound) I'm still good at ideas but not that good at execution. Can anybody tell me what effect would be caused by choosing the most shitty codecs from the Ventrilo codecs list below?

ventrilo-codecs-listsm.jpg

I don't have a mic right now so I can't test it myself but I'm itching to dig deeper into it.

There's probably not much to say about the new sound engine but if I should move this to a separate topic please let me know. I just think it would be extremely valuable if we came up with a solution. Hearing a guy over Ventrilo or TS during the heat of battle who's voice and emotionless way of talking reminds more of a mother in law than a soldier is hard to compete with in terms of immersion killers.

ArmA guys haven't came up with a solution so I think we can sefely assume that no solution has been found. Yet.

I think I will hit Audacity forums and ask the geeks there. You know, it's an Open Source application so geeks there are super-geek for sure ;)

Edit:

Here's the hope http://www.speex.org/

The Technology

Speex is based on CELP and is designed to compress voice at bitrates ranging from 2 to 44 kbps. Some of Speex's features include:

Narrowband (8 kHz), wideband (16 kHz), and ultra-wideband (32 kHz) compression in the same bitstream

Intensity stereo encoding

Packet loss concealment

Variable bitrate operation (VBR)

Voice Activity Detection (VAD)

Discontinuous Transmission (DTX)

Fixed-point port

Acoustic echo canceller

Noise suppression

I don't think 8 kHz is crippled enough to mimic military radio station but there's a source code for you, sobek ;)

Creative soundprofile set to record, then you can do a LOT of things with your mike-input ;)

A custom version of Mumble might work because the source code is available. Also, Mumble can be interfaced with the radio in-game and mute communication between player when the LOS is lost

Mumble >>> (Ventrilo and TS) in term of quality and latency

Thanks for the info but I would prefer a solution for both Ventrilo and TeamSpeak because these are the most popular voice comm apps.

Reducing the bitrate won't do it, i don't know speex well but gsm at low bitrates does not sound anything like a radio transmission, because it is especially tailored to deliver speech intelligibility at VERY high compression ratios (via linear prediction coding, if you're interested ;)). Long story short, it won't sound like radio.

Most important feature would be some static noise and the rest is basic filtering. Unfortunately i don't have any good ideas how to do it in realtime without the proper hardware (or software for that matter) atm.

We have some plans for in-game VoIP in the form of radio comm.

This is fantastic news!

Thanks so much! This will improve teamplay a lot - even a dump and simple version would. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I keep my fingers crossed for VOIP in A-10C.

I have one suggestion, to make it similar to the Arma games. Have your self able to join a flight and you then can talk to that flight only as well as change channel and speak to all of your side. Can't wait to see what the future brings. Thanks

¿Realistic Comm similar to Open Falcon? I say based on frequencies, with VHF and UHF, etc... can dream?

Oh if only, here's hoping hey.

Integrating Mumble perhaps? maybe would be also a good idea for the future doing a Teamspeak 3 plugin, because most communities have already their Teamspeak2 and will go to TS3 when it's out of beta (and they don't use it just for DCS). A plugin with all radio physical features modelled, like interferences, mountains between aircrafts stopping communications, radio damage, channels, etc.)

Having the options between built-in clients would be quite nice, yes.
