element1108 Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Discovery Canada commissioned a show covering the training process for Canadian fighter pilots called "Jetstream". It was actually a pretty damn good show and it feels like it was the audio/video version of these documents. 10 1 hour episodes covering the entire training process for CF-18 figter pilots. Ground school, first flight in fighter, formation landings, night flying, formation flying, air to air refueling, weapons deployment all the way up to graduation. Pretty intense stuff, but I'd love to see a similar series for an American/European/Russian fighter. If I can't watch it though, it's nice to read about it :). Thanks for the links Viper
Alicatt Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 The BBC had a series a few years ago called Test Pilot about the training of new test pilots at Boscombe Down. Great series, loved the moment when they introduced the Harrier pilot to an alternative form of vertical take off with the Lightning :pilotfly: They covered Fixed Wing jet and prop aircraft and also rotary winged flight too. 1 Sons of Dogs, Come Eat Flesh Clan Cameron
Bwaze Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Yeah, Jetstream was definitely the best airforce documentary I've seen. Movie Speed & Angels also comes to mind, but it focuses a bit more on personal stories of two F-14 cadets. Real Top Guns is a bit more like Jetstream, about Australian airforce, but not nearly as good. And I'm watching Carrier right now, but there's very little about aviation, flying, or even the Navy up to part 4 (of 10). IMAX: Fighter Pilot - Operation Red Flag was abysmal, or even worse. Fake, fake, fake, and no valuable information whatsoever, because you question everything you see. OK, some nice wide angle shots of flying, but that's it. 1
wildone_106 Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Speed & Angels was a real disappointment as 80% of it was talking to her family and about how she 'feels' there wasn't anywhere near enough about the actual training or missions on the boat to justify the purchase. If you can find it, I highly recommend 'ICE HORNET' its about the swedish F18s and the photography is STUNNING. Has a little bit about the pilots and what happens at base but 80% is raw jets.
