I bought this a few days ago and I'm hooked - don't know why but I am even though I have no idea what I'm doing. lol

Any X3 guru here?

I'm no guru, but I like X3 also. I like to cruise around the X universe, here some screens I took:

I have X2 but could never really get into it, is this one worth picking up? The graphics looky pretty nice. I love older space shooters such as Freespace, starlancer and tie fighter etc etc...

Definitely not an X3-guru, but I played the game a lot. Sort of an EVE-Online for SinglePlayer.

The game has a steep learning curve, but if you fiddle around with it, it's very rewarding.

I was happy finding many parallels to good old Elite.

What is that? I've never heard about it yet.

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

I'm hooked as well, even though i find it painstakingly frustrating. There's no proper way to make money in the beginning, tried caping pirate ships, but i end up spending all my hard earned cash on ship repairs instead of being able to save some.

You know, you can repair ships with your repair laser - once you have claimed an abandoned ship and while you are still spacewalking just target it and fire at it. Of course, this only makes sense for smaller vessels like M5, M4 and M3, if its not too damaged. If you can't be bothered, just sell them as they are, even small profitsss are better than no profitsss, no?

There are also 19 ownerless ships strewn about the universe, all in mint condition, just waiting to be claimed. A full list of their whereabouts can be found here Might be considered a slight cheat, but I know that I used them when I started out. Even a few of them should be enough to buy you a nice TS freighter and set him up as a trader, which will ensure a steady income.

How is it compared to Eve-O?

IMHO there are several similarities.

In both games you can chose your career, start a company and make loads of money and play it more by organizing your financial empire or head out as bountyhunter or even as a pirate.

Of course EVE has some major advantages over X3, since there are many more aspects that keep the game alive on the long run. Sure you can also go exploring and follow the X3-Storyline, but when playing with hundreds of players, the game is automatically much more dynamic and flexible.

To the guys on the fence, if you're fascinated by space and exploration then this game is made for you. Let me just say that I have no patience for RPGs nor the desire to read a manual that doesn't evolve around operating a hunk of fire breathing, titanium mudmover. I'm only telling you thais because I've read one guy saying X3 game play is akin to an RPG but in space. I almost didn't buy X3 TC because of it. Once you've gotten past the itnitial shock/confusion of what the hell to do the first time you've fired up the game, you'll be fine. :D

Last night, I schemed to make quick cash and decided to go for a weapon heist. Piece of cake! I'd pounce on unsuspecting arms dealer and the space furball would last all of 15 seconds or less then I'd be on my way to trade them for some much needed cash and an all night binge. And they say you can't see explosion in space... :D

X3 takes a while to get into or get anyway and probably not suited for a business trip. I'd recommend Sins of a Solar Empire. It is a fantastic space RTS game and, imo, much better than StarCraft II.

I'm no X3 Guru either but it really is a great game. Unfortunately I gave it up while doing the HUB plot and have yet to get back into it. I had about 40 Universe traders and a base with 25+ Factories making me rich, while I went Pirate or Xenon smashing in my Vidar with a trailing fleet of Teladi Shrikes. Utter carnage and great fun.

How long did it take you to inflate your economy to that size? We must be talking months here. :joystick:

Just like in most games it's very hard at the beginning, but the further you get the faster you advance. In X3 the first flights took me hours and days to make some money. After the first few upgrades (larger cargo), I my profit doubled and trippled in a matter of minutes. Of course there are still high goals, but the start is the hardest.

BTW: Did you install all patches? There was a nice cockpit-patch released when I was still playing the game.

Very true. For example, I now get build missions from stations that net me tens of millions of credit in just a few minutes of playtime.

I think you are confusing X3: Reunion with X3: Terran Conflict here - there is no official cockpit-patch for TC, only mods. TBH I've never missed cockpits.

And yes, the game is quite the time-sink - Steam tells me I've spent 718 hours on it though I'm pretty sure it wasn't quite that much, SETA seems to throw the time calculation off somehow, actual playing time I'd put at around 100-150 hours. During the HUB plot I would regularly park my ship well out of harms way, activate SETA and leave the system running over night, my factories producing the needed items all the while. In hindsight I should have just built more factories, especially chip-plants but whats done is done.

Yeah It took a while :) (Edit:- just checked with Steam - 209 hours in total, I thought it'd been more....) Even then, I wasn't anywhere near prepared for the HUB plot. I remembered being dumbstruck by the size of the plot goal.

I use the Cockpit mod that uses the old X2 cockpits --> http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=254635

Wise choice Sir. Be prepared for a Learning curve in the shape of a cliff.

:D

I'd like to just add... after that drop, you'll dig yourself a hole and crawl in it. There's no getting out.
