Dusty [CPC] Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 Just a quick question (thinking about mission scenarios): Will there be an option to equip friendly movers with IR strobe markers (or at least any kind of markers) to differenciate them from hostiles, as done in real life? Nate--IRL-- Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 The SADL (DataLink) does this for you. you will see a little green X on your HUD and TAD to indicate friendly forces on the ground. Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading
Nate--IRL-- Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 Good point :) I don't know. Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading

AJ.eightFive Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 What if it breaks at night? Sorry, just playing devil's advocate ;) The RL answer is probably something along the lines of: you're having a bad day so go home and get a new jet before you make it worse by strafing friendlies.
Krunkskimo Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 i think this should be considered at least as an option for an insurgency campaign. At night we would carry IR chem lights in our shoulder pockets as well as have IR glint squares sown on both shoulders and back of helmet. vehicles usually had a combination of IR strobes, IR headlight filters, ect depending on the mission of the unit and all OPs would be marked with IR strobes. Conventional war fighting usually requires IR light discipline.
Chelco Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Hey gents, I'm playing a mission where I am providing emergency CAS to a non-JTAC US Marines squad and the IR strobes would have been great to pinpoint their position. So far I used the coordinates to locate them. Hard to tell friend or foe when it gets personal down there. Cheers, Real and Simulated Wars
todd022 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Always had an IR "Firefly" attached to my helmet (and a backup 9v version in my survival pouch). Really helps the Kiowa drivers keep an eye you when you're in a city at night. [SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

effte Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 SADL, even when working, will not indicate friendly forces on the ground. Only friendly vehicles. Quite a significant difference, at least to those wearing (out) the boots. :) ----- Introduction to UTM/MGRS - Trying to get your head around what trim is, how it works and how to use it? - DCS helos vs the real world.
Nate--IRL-- Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Not so, Ground troops can be shown on SADL if the mission designer wishes. Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading
Eddie Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Hmmm, thought only specific vehicles could use ELRPS/SADL now? Will have to check that one. If it is the case that infantry can use them ELRPS in sim it's a nessesary deviation from reality I think, at least until (and IF) IR strobes/Cyalumes etc can be modelled in the sim. I've never known lads on the ground to carry ELRPS kit with them unless mechanised. Any Army types out there can feel free to correct me however.
Spetz Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 In Afghanistan we put IR chem lights in clear water bottles taped to our antennas. The number of lights determined what tank troop you were in. Worked great. It would be nice to have this modeled.
aaron886 Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 +1... great idea! little flashing strobes, with a slightly increasing LOD size at a distance perhaps.
Spetz Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 You can see IR lights at a surprisingly far distance...
Insanatrix Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Yeah I was gonna say they are really damn bright, I would think you could see them for at least 4-5 miles if not more.
bmbpdk Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 great idea! We used IR lightsticks/IR strobes almost on every operation in Iraq (I was in a mechanised infantry coy in basrah sector), and the apache pilots appreciated that alot. We used them in other ways as well, but thats classified. bmbpdk Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Yeah I was gonna say they are really damn bright, I would think you could see them for at least 4-5 miles if not more. one way to deal with that, is to tape it in with only a 1cm x 1cm spot left( on the lightsticks) the IR-beacons had a "volume" knob, to increase/decrease the light coming out Inno3d RTX 2070 Twin X2, ASUS STRIX Z270E Gaming, Intel i7 7700K, 32GB Corsair vengeance, Kingston Hyper X FPS Alloy Cherry MX Red, Logitech G102 Prodigy, Track Ir 5, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Combat Rudder pedals, Beyer Dynamic DT770, Acer CB280HK 4K monitor, Win 10 Pro 64bit
RodBorza Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 +1! Great idea. IR strobe lights to be seen through NVG's... (hmmmm...donuts...) This is an amazing sim! 'Nuff said!:pilotfly: YouTube: SloppyDog
DTWD Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Sounds like an brilliant idea, just imagine the first time you fire up your NV and see all those white dots and flashing lights that weren't there a second ago...would look (and feel) awesome. Regards [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
