Succellus Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Yeha thats it. I hear people saying CCLD ain t worth it yet and that a raid 0 is still better and cheaper. So what you guys think ? power5 Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 What is CCLD? Most SSD are faster than just about all RAID configs using conventional HDDs and the same budget. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Aaron i7 2600k@4.4ghz, GTX1060-6gb, 16gb DDR3, T16000m, Track IR5 BS2-A10C-UH1-FC3-M2000-F18C-A4E-F14B-BF109

Aren't SSD's hellishly expensive for relatively little space? Believe they are still around $2/gb at least. Not too much more than a raptor raid though I bet. Aren't SSD's hellishly expensive for relatively little space? Space is little yes, but you can keep all your multimedia in a conventional hard drive, and leave the SDD for OS and heavier games only (120GB is plenty for this, 240MB even better). The system responsiveness will be felt in every aspect even when playing from the HDD because your page file and system access is blazing fast. Not to mention reliability. SDD's will outlive HDD any day. After trying SDD you wont look back except at your empty wallet. :D Edited November 12, 2010 by Pilotasso .

LawnDart Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 SDD is the way. No RAID mess needed . ;) I agree, however, I wouldn't use an SSD for anything but system files, OS etc. It won't hold up well (over time) if you read/write often to it. I just got a WD Velociraptor and it's blazing fast just as a normal SATA drive. Rusty_M Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 That's what scares me :D I'll wait for prices to drop........considerably. I'll join that club. It's just too expensive for my budget. Can the gains really be that great to justify the price over a single HDD/Raid setup? The world is going mad. Me? The new SSD disks support TRIM witch spreads the writing process to maximize lifetime for the disk. The new disks have 3 years waranty and will definitly live for at least 5 years with OS AND any DCS SIM that would rise in those 5 years.

The earlier gen SSD's didn not have TRIM capability and had poorer garbage collection. Todays SDD's performance degradation is hardly noticeable. And they are still faster than any HDD after prolonged use. .
PoleCat Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 Yes waiting here also. Just plain too much for right now. Prices will contiune to settle over time and I will buy when it is well worth it. Not yet. Out http://www.104thphoenix.com/

Succellus Posted November 13, 2010 Author Posted November 13, 2010 What i saw in reviews is: SSD for OS and sandbox games. SSD only worth if SLD. MLD sucks in degradation over time (1/10 of a SLD) & speed. The rest goes to a huge HD that doesnt need to be that fast. Problem here in Brasil is the fact 2gb are like 250 USD. No F way!! I think the prices will drop fast, SSD is the perfect thing for server response time, so they will lower price. HDD drives are on the countdown to extinction. Todays SDD's performance degradation is hardly noticeable. And they are still faster than any HDD after prolonged use. No its not, performance degradation is still quite big on the most recent upto date SSD's. It isnt as bad as before, but ALL MLC SSD's suffer from it and Trim and GC dont do that great of a job and depending on your OS and setup, you might not even have the use of Trim. Although, saying that, they are faster than any normal hdd even when degraded, but the level of degradation can be astounding when compared to new ssd's. Thats why nearly everyone who uses ssd's use freespace cleaner/ASCleaner or alike to keep their ssd's in tiptop shape, then when installing a new hdd they use hdderase which resets all the cells back to normal. They are getting better, but over time todays ssd's drastically reduce in performance, simply because trim isnt that great, although its better than GC. Give your new ssd's 6 months pilotasso and you will soon see that you get passed the initial shock of how fast they are and you will then start noticing how quickly they degrade if not looked after properly. To the OP, SLC is the way to go if you can afford the price premium, only you can decide if the extra $$$ is worthit for SLC based SSD's.
Pilotasso Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 In 6 months we will talk and compare my SDD to your old SDD degradation. ;) .
bumfire Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 (edited) Old ? dude, both our SSD's are Gen 2 EDIT: But I will grant you that your vertex is a better drive than the things thats raided up in this rig, when raided they pwn, but singly they are not as competitive as the vertex drives, so I have to give you that. However that being said, my Corsair F120 is, but it's busy serving pr0n :) Edited November 13, 2010 by bumfire
sweinhart3 Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 Standard drives in raid 0 will net you almost zero improvement. I used to own a few raid setups and after several reviews on hardware sights and comparing with what I had, raid 0 is only beneficial in a multiuser environment or when reading/writing long sequential files like video compression. For most users that run in a single user environment, most of their files are not sequential and the random seek times play a much larger role than the read/write speed. This may well be not applicable to raiding SSD drives tho because they dont have the same limitations of a mechanical drive. Pilotasso Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 (edited) The prices of old models is going get lower as manufacturers want to discontinue them, but overall the price ratio $$/GB of latest SDD's in any given time is highly unlikely to drop any time soon Im afraid. There are yet technological barriers that prevent SDD's from becoming mainstream like mech drives. Edited November 14, 2010 by Pilotasso .
