The military is not terrified of going to war, it's just that NK could potentially devastate or at least, cause a lot of damage to south Korea with their artillery. Furthermore, while their missiles may be insufficient to deliver nukes, and a DPRK bomber would proably never be able to make it past ROK and US air defenses and fighters, they could perhaps slip one onto a submarine and plant it in somewhere like Pusan. So it's the ROK civilians that are in danger. They could also easily fire radiological artillery shells.

Uhm... nuclear bombs can be planted as well... Not to mention that short range ballistic missiles are cheap, and NK already owns them, they could just change the payload...

Besides, i dont see a reason why this has to escalate to nuclear war, is it north korea that wants to obliterate south? I thought their goal was to "liberate" south...

Yeah, North Korea are the good guys, right? It's not like they've ever threatened nuclear war like the South has... oh wait.

US military deploys upgraded A-10 attack aircraft in S Korea

Nov 16, 2010

SEOUL (BNS): The US military has deployed an upgraded A-10 Thunderbolt II ground attack aircraft to its base in South Korea.

The new aircraft was deployed at the US air base in Osan near the South Korean capital Seoul late last month, the Korean news agency Yonhap reported Tuesday quoting a statement from the US Forces Korea (USFK).

With this deployment, the 25th Fighter Squadron of the USFK has received its last batch of A-10C aircraft with “improved precision strike capability”, the statement said.

The A-10 Thunderbolt is a twin-engine combat aircraft used to provide close-air support to ground forces and employs a wide variety of conventional munitions, including general-purpose bombs.

The fighter, with short takeoff and landing capability, is used to target tanks, armoured vehicles and other ground installations.

The upgraded A-10C Thunderbolt II, with its precision engagement technology based on laser and GPS, is capable of carrying precision-guided bombs.

Why don't they unite like Germany and live happily !

Because in E. Germany the politik on the ground was changing. Gorbachev had liberalised the SU. Criticism of the regime was starting to become the norm and he refused to offer help to the E. Germany autorities to quell public discontent. The regime hadn't the power to stop the unstoppable. IN NK the government has a vice grip over everything. And people are so impoverished that its hard to get anything organised that might be a semblance of opposition. Besides.. reuniting with SK would be a hard hit for SK finacially. It was and still is a hard hit for West Germany.

Yeah, the West German economy was hit. But still they were very happy with the union. I like the German people for that.

If S. Koreans are thinking just about the economy and are completely indifferent towards the situation of their brothers in N. Korea then this world has become a bad place to live in. :(

The Koreans in the south (most Koreans, as far as I understand, are actually slightly insulted by the idea that they would be two different peoples) aren't "thinking just about the economy", but that doesn't mean economists and politicians in the south should not look at the economic ramifications of a reunification. What they have basically said in the interviews I've seen is that a unification in the style of germany would be impossible, so they need to find other ways to "make it happen". The exact nature of the difficulties go above my personal understanding of national economics, but since they do have people that make a living on studying the problem and trying to come up with a solution I guess there has to be real issues, even beyond the practical issue of them technically being at war. :P

My own guess would go something like this though:

If a reunification happens in such a way that the south pretty suddenly takes over responsibility for administrating the northern half of the peninsula, they wouldn't have the economy to avoid making things even worse. This isn't a question of having the money - they do have the money - but they would need an infrastructure (both physical and in the financial and industrial sectors) that is up to the task. Contrasting to the german reunification where the system itself in the east relatively calmly dissolved itself without famine and so on. Imagine a country of 150 million people that are famined, bankrupt, with very little infrastructure that isn't military, and then ask the US to suddenly administer it - while the US does have a lot of economic might to throw around, we are talking about adding a huge amount of land and a sudden ~35% of the population that are bordering on or actually in starvation. It's a non-trivial problem and going too hastily into it without preparing the infrastructures may very well cost a lot of lives.

North Korea not preparing for extended campaign: U.S.

The United States believes North Korea's artillery attack on a South Korean island this week was an isolated action and Pyongyang is not preparing for an extended military campaign, the State Department said on Wednesday.

I am very concerned. All I know is if any other country to be included in conflict in any way it will be disastrous for the planet. We have never been closer to nuclear war. God help us.

Bit of hyperbole there imo Falcon: we have been closer to nuclear war before (even if we don't count the end of WW2, since there was only one nuclear power at that time). The Cuba crisis is what comes to mind. Let's remember that the north have a nuclear weapons program and have conducted what appears to be one failed and one possibly successful (though some indicate it was failed too) tests. There is no direct evidence that the north have reached the stage of weaponized warheads yet, and it is similarly unsure if they would have delivery capabilities worth much (they have some fairly nice missiles, but since we haven't seen the warheads yet we don't know if those missiles are capable of delivering).

It's worrrying, yes, but not end-of-the-world type worrying like the Cuban missile crisis was.

Correct + even if they would do something stupid, I doubt it that some other country will retaliate with a nuclear attack. I think no superpower can justify the use of nuclear weapons at the moment. The only nuclear danger comes from some nuke lost in the wrong hands.
