Conure Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Hi all, First of all, happy new year! I wish you all a prosperous 2011. Anyway, the question concerns my pc. At the moment I have a q6600, 4gb ddr 2 ram and a gtx260. I get quite a low fps on a10 at times and feel my CPU is the thing to upgrade? I have an upper budget of 200 pounds (uk) and was wondering if you guys think this will afford me a decent upgrade? I have a socket 775 mono so may need to change it! CN I do much with this budget? Apologies for bad grammar, I am on a mobile! MTFDarkEagle Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 I'm not sure you can do a lot with that budget.. I suggest you save money to get a 1366 socket upgrade (or 1156), or you can either wait for the intel sandy bridge to be released and properly tested. Conure Posted January 1, 2011 Author Posted January 1, 2011 Thank you for the replies - spending more is not really an option for a long while! I am no looking for highest graphics etc, just smooth gameplay at medium and asubstantial boost over m q6600! Do you not think something like this: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/186428 Would offer that? Thanks again, if you don't consider t worth it I will just keep my q6600! Thanks :) Intel i7 6700k, Asus GTX1070, 16gb DDR4 @ 3200mhz, CH Fighterstick, CH Pro Throttle, CH Pro Rudder Pedals, Samsung Evo 850 SSD @ 500GB * 2, TrackIR 5 and 27" monitor running at 2560 * 1440, Windows 10.
Atomic978 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 if you really want to know what you bottelneck is do some test. Press ctrl alt del. and then bring up your task manager. After it is up minimize it and then fire up dcs. After flying dcs for a few minutes close out dcs and go back to task manager and see what was maxed out. Like CPU or MEM. If neither one was over 80% for each core then your bottlenect is not the cpu. You can always use MSI Afterburner as well to check out your GPU and see how it performs as well. I as well have a Socket 775. Q9400. I have it OC to 3.2ghz and my FSB up to 1600mhz. The sim runs great with my set up. Hope this helps. =RvE=Atomic Alienware Area-51, Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 3.2GHz, 8gig Corsair XMS2 DDR2 Ram, EVGA SC GTX 570, Western Digital 1.0TB 64mb cache HD. Atomic978 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 forgot to mention when you go back out of game go to the performance tab on the task manager to check where everything is. =RvE=Atomic Alienware Area-51, Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 3.2GHz, 8gig Corsair XMS2 DDR2 Ram, EVGA SC GTX 570, Western Digital 1.0TB 64mb cache HD. Atomic978 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 you can not get a AMD processer for a Intel board. You need to stick with a Socket 775. =RvE=Atomic Alienware Area-51, Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 3.2GHz, 8gig Corsair XMS2 DDR2 Ram, EVGA SC GTX 570, Western Digital 1.0TB 64mb cache HD. MTFDarkEagle Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 That cpu you linked to is a AMD processor (as Atomic pointed out), and it cannot be used with the motherboard you currently have. You have to get an AM2/AM2+/AM3 motherboard for that kind of cpu. Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
Conure Posted January 1, 2011 Author Posted January 1, 2011 Hey MTF, I know! Sorry for not making myself clear, I can afford that CPU and a motherboard too! There are plenty for about 50 quid which put me within my budget. What do you think? Like I said before, highest graphics I am not bothered about, I just want it smooth and I am sure that it's my CPU bottlenecking me! Conure Posted January 1, 2011 Author Posted January 1, 2011 for example, this - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/174597 I think I could move my Ram an gtx260 over, I've got a good qualitt 750Watt PSU too, so I think I'd be all set. Games like Bad Company 2 ec run perfectly which leads me to believe my isses with RoF and A10 are purely CPU based. If this CPU and Mobo would give a good boost for medium graphics, I'd be happy to go ahead... Tone71 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 If your current motherboard supports all 775 processors, have you thought about something like this? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-192-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat= It seems silly to me to throw all that money at new m.board and processor, I'd save some for a complete upgrade later this year. I didn't think the Q6600 was that bad a processor though tbh. Is it worth waiting for Beta 5? Migo Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Wait for the new Sandy Bridge cpus which will be released on the 9th january. They perform way better and are easier to overclock than the old i5/i7 cpus.

You should be able to get to at least >3GHz which will give you an appreciable boost. Save up, sell your q6600/775 board and upgrade to i5-2500/P67 later. Conure Posted January 1, 2011 Author Posted January 1, 2011 Okay guys thanks for the advice. I will hold off on a purchase for a few months, it just I have 2 issues...most of the time the gameruns fine but on the runway when there are a few a10s parked up I get very low fps, and also if I upload the whole cannon clip into the ground it slows down too! Perhaps I am being picky as it is often very smooth... Is anyone playing on a worse rig than me? I should stop inspecting the fps and try to enjoy the game :-) Also, I have a bad mobo and can't get past 2.6ghz, which is where I have it now! power5 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 You can not use your Ram on that 770AMD board. Its a AM3 and can not use DDR2 ram. Not sure why you can not OC your mobo past 2.6ghz. That seems unbelievable. What mobo do you have? Make sure your ram is not going OC when you clock your CPU. That could hold you back. You need to get some more speed out of your CPU and you will be much better off. For reference, my allendale core (very similar to your Conroe) started at 1.8ghz and has been running for 4 years at 3.4ghz. If you have bad cooling you may be hitting a wall from that as well. Conure Posted January 1, 2011 Author Posted January 1, 2011 Power if I go past this amount my Internet stops working! Apparently it's something to do with the pci-e frequency but I'm not sure. Conure Posted January 1, 2011 Author Posted January 1, 2011 Hanks very much for your advice power! Much appreciated. A friend has offered another idea... He suggests I buy a good aftermarket fan, and a gtx 460. I said that my mobo struggles to oc but he said if I persevere I will get it to at least 3ghz. This would come in well under budget. What do you guys think? Tone71 Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 The slowdown when using the cannon is a known issue. If you are willing to wait I would save up for the Intel Sandy Bridge, as mentioned by DarkEagle; although the Core I5/7s are dropping in price I wouldn't recommend going down that route, you're better off investing in the newer technology. Windows 10 Home, Intel Core i7-9700K @ 4.6GHz, Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 Gaming (8GB VRAM) on 34" LG curved monitor @ 3440x1440, 32GB RAM, TrackIR 3 (with Vector Expansion), Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Combat Pedals, Thrustmaster Cougar MFDs.
EtherealN Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Conure, if you ensure that the aftermarket fan is compatible with more than your current socket (most of them come with compatibility kits for pretty much all sockets, but do double-check) that does sound like a nice idea - if you still end up blocked by the motherboard you'll be able to use the cooler for a later build, so it won't be money wasted. (And to be honest, I'd definitely recommend aftermarket coolers even on computers that run at stock speeds simply because lower heat = less wear.) However, it is entirely possible that if your mobo blocks you you might end up equally blocked no matter which cooler you put on the CPU, since the 775 systems are 100% dependant on the FSB for OCing.
