for those that think nuclear is the only solution . roughtly it says that european solar energy has reached the level of 22 nuclear reactors . and the solar electricity is becoming everyday cheaper

Solar power is nice, but the problem is that conventional solar cells are very energy intensive to produce and the process is not environmentally harmless either. Non conventional solar power (photosynthesis or some other biochemical process) might be more efficient in both production and operation, but who knows when these designs will become feasible for mass production?

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

Come let's eat grandpa!

My country produces between 40% and 90% of renewable energies for the grid depending of the time of the year, and those figures are rising every year.

They mostly come from river dams and wind mills with mills gaining up ground pretty damn fast.

So its possible to run a whole country without nuclear plants. :)

Japan has 3 problems with this though:

-lack of space

-Energy needed accounts for thousands of new installations wich cant be donne overnight

-Its gonna cost billions and japan has a debt problem already.

What will you do when the sun will not shine for a week because of cloudy sky? Will you shut down industry (the biggest consumer of electricity)?

The general rule is that for every unreliable energy source (wind, sun) there has to be a reliable (gas, coal) energy source in standby.

Where will you build those solar plants? Will you sacrifice wast areas of fertile land for them? How 'nice' will it look on the landscape?

There are some plans that suggest (for Europe) using Norways vast potential for storage power stations to compensate for this. The question is whether Norway would ever agree to such a project, as it has to be considered that such an undertaking would not be environmentally harmless (large reservois have the potential to severly impact local and in big cases larger scale climate).

Not 100% accurate.

Most times you can compensate between the different renewables, but you need excess infrastructures.

Geothermal is pretty stable too and that one Japan should have plenty potential.

obviously , my post wasn't about solar energy only but most to show that with a bit of willingness alternative solutions are feasible

Norway is currently leading the research on thorium based nuclear power technology. These will use background radiation to give extremely clean abundant power with almost no enviromental impact.

Then again, Norway is almost entirely dependent on oil and gas as income so I think we can expect some delays. Other countries are also making advances.

Rubbia states that a tonne of thorium can produce as much energy as 200 tonnes of uranium, or 3,500,000 tonnes of coal.

unlike uranium-based breeder reactors, thorium requires a start-up by neutrons from a uranium reactor. But experts note that "the second thorium reactor may activate a third thorium reactor. This could continue in a chain of reactors for a millennium if we so choose." They add that because of thorium's abundance, it will not be exhausted in 1,000 years.

interesting like any research that tend to ameliorate human condition . but uranium is needed so there will be craziness wastes

Don't blame them, every company wants the best for itself. Make the highest possible income.

Blame the government for being influenced of corruption and the lobbies pressure.

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

We have enough oil up there to last us a very long time. I don't know why they didn't just say screw you guys we aren't buying your oil. We could still be paying under $2 dollars a gallon easy.

You have there almost free oil... $2 for galoon is nothing :D

In Poland you pay $7.2 for galoon where earnings are maybe 1\3 of US. I don't see reasons to worry about :P

Dude. The price of oil ATM is not because of demand and supply issues. Its because of speculators. When the speculators took that hit during the credit crunch you saw that price of oil drop way down. And now its back up. rising faster than real tangible demand is. Same as gold now.
