Conure Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Sorry if it's already been posted but I had a quick scan of the pages and couldn't see it. http://www.simhq.com/_air13/air_462a.html Here is SimHQs review of DCS:A10, for anybody interested. MTFDarkEagle Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Love the disclaimer at the start :P "In the interest of disclosure, Erik was a member of the closed-beta test team for DCS A-10C Warthog. He received no reward, monetary or otherwise, for his involvement in the development of this product. His opinions and conclusions in this review are his and his alone." Nice review! EvilBivol-1 Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Just a quick correction regarding the form of copy protection used in DCS: A-10C. This has been updated since Black Shark and now uses what's called "AAA" (add activation automatically) technology. This automatically generates a new activation 31 days after the last (final) one is used, so the user never runs completely out of activations. Also, A-10C is sold with 10 activations and 10 deactivations. For more details, please see the Install guide in the game's Doc folder. This post is intended to clarify the issue in the review. Please do not derail the topic with a CP discussion. Start a new thread if you wish. - EB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Nothing is easy. Everything takes much longer. The Parable of Jane's A-10 Forum Rules
El_Roto Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Thanks for posting the link, I haven't been to SimHQ for a few days and had missed the review. Apples Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Was a pretty good review but i think there are a lot of cons that were missed at this point. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 6 Monitors, 5 Video Cards, 90inch Flat Screen, Intel Bad Ass 2 @ 72.6Ghz, Atari Hotas!!!
Spectre_USA Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 And THAT is why I didn't submit a review anywhere. I did the pre-view, and HOTAS, link in my sig, but didn't want to do a review of the "finished" product. It is, for about 90% of it, just downright brilliant! But I have a total of 8 hard crash logs, and other quibbles which prevented an in-depth look, as I did not want to slag that 10 or so percent. Who knows, maybe after another patch or two, it will reach 99% brilliant, but with a simulation this complex, there is bound to be a few lurkers... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] A tale of 2 hogs
StrongHarm Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 I'm tempted to allow my emotions to get the best of me in commenting about this review, but I can't. I'll just say that I don't think a 'first look review' should be written by someone who was a beta tester. If today, right now, I fired DCS Warthog up for the first time, I would be too much in awe to see that the SADL system has problems that will most likely be worked out within days. I just hope there aren't many people deterred from DCS:Warthog by this review. They'll miss out on the experience I have every day: flightgasm. I think this review lacked objectivity and that some of the comments were in poor taste. It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm

Other than mentioning a few bugs he pretty much covers all the systems and features of the sim pretty nicely. I admit I only really skimmed over most of it, but what I read seemed pretty fair and objective to me. He also recommends it if you want it but to hold of on patches to see how it pans out. I think that is a good recommendation. Obviously you have to review what you have in front of you. It's just like he said, the problem with the SADL and datalinking is a big part of multiplayer and something that you will miss. Your assumption that it will be fixed in a couple of days is just that, an assumption. Obviously only ED knows when they will release a patch. As a reviewer you have to stick to the facts. Remember being objective is putting the facts before your personal feelings, thoughts or prejudice. 1
macedk Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 And bare in mind a complete objective review would be dead booring... review : Its a combat flightsim, you can fly an A-10c, there might be allot of flying and allot of explosions, there is a 3d click-able cockpit, buy and download over the internet. tyrspawn Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 No mention of the serious technical problems A-10 has at this time. Just check the "crash" forum for all the fun issues people are having. A-10 seems to be pretty much in a $50 open beta right now.
StrongHarm Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 I admit I only really skimmed over most of it, but what I read seemed pretty fair and objective to me. Allow me to summarize for you: Several comments about how DCS:A-10 doesn't measure up to Falcon4. Repeated references to how bad things were in Beta. Condescending? These are just the ones that made me choke on my scotch: The Eagle Dynamics FAQ says that they “hope” to release a compatibility patch for DCS: Black Shark and DCS: A-10C Warthog at some point, but the patch to include Flaming Cliffs 2 is only “being considered”. Although some of the warning lights in the cockpit look blurry (are the pilot’s eyes modeled with astigmatism?) A real WTF moment. Buy it if you have to have it. This was in a first-look review by someone who should (were I in his shoes I would) be taking pride in his contribution to the effort rather than being so flippant about it's success. I stand by my opinion that although there may be some information in this review that will technically inform people (if they refuse to read the manual), it's not objective, it's largely premature, and it contains comments that are in poor taste. This is how I see it. I respectfully decline any debate about my opinion, but I'm looking forward to reading opinions about the SimHQ review. It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm
Insanatrix Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 I'm trying to understand why the harsh attitude towards the review. I find it odd that someone so willing to speak or comment of others opinions declines to support his own. I would say that the facts were stated quite well, the sim in it's current state was represented for what it was and the review was quite fine and not premature nor in poor taste. I find it kind of funny that you choked on your scotch over a comment in the review that has been in the FAQ since release. Almost word for word I might add. I also have to say that since A-10C has no dynamic campaign or any kind of campaign system than missions strung together in a series Falcon 4 actually does surpass it in regard to that. I also wouldn't call that an opinion but more of a fact. Considering that was one of the only places Falcon 4 was brought up that I saw. I'm sorry but you can't just post criticism about a review that someone put work into and then play the im above and beyond that game. Not gonna fly especially with such flimsy justifications for said opinions that you gave. 1
StrongHarm Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 And... the first gratuitous resistance to the status quo rears it's adventurous head! I am properly chastened for not embracing negativity... for negativity's sake! :) Please move along. There's nothing to see here. The relativity of truth has not been threatened. It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm
Insanatrix Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 If you were chastened for anything it was for overbearing pretentious comments and a general lack of objectivity when questioning someone else's objectivity. Not to mention a complete lack of foundation for your opinions. this has to be my favorite quote of anything you have ever said. "If today, right now, I fired DCS Warthog up for the first time, I would be too much in awe to see that the SADL system has problems that will most likely be worked out within days." That is the definition of objectivity... yeah not really. When you review something you have to review it for what it is not what you want it to be or think it is. That IS OBJECTIVITY. You were right about one thing though, the relativity of truth hasn't been threatened... at least by anything you've posted so far. 1
Steel Jaw Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 The review is superficial and obviously directed at the unlettered masses. SIMHQ has bills to pay and they are advertising DCS A10 for purchase on their front page. 'Nuff said there. It's still too early for a porpoper review, needs another round or 2 of patching first. When the time comes, I should write a REAL review. But who would host it? "You see, IronHand is my thing" My specs: W10 Pro, I5/11600K o/c to 4800 @1.32v, 64 GB 3200 XML RAM, Red Dragon 7800XT/16GB.

Lets wait to review it until 2 years later when everything is perfect. Thats gonna help the 100,000 people that bought the product back when it came out but of course we need to wait to review it until we can put it in the best possible light so that we can please the 2 freakin % that are gonna get bent out of shape when we shed light on their baby. Objectivity... you gotta love it! I'm done with the stupidity.
